Celebrate two decades of stewardship at Hugh Taylor Birch State Park with a hands-on Earth Day work day paired with a community potluck barbecue. All ages are welcome, and children should come with an adult. The gathering spot is the picnic tables in the Primitive Camping Area on the west side of the park, the same location often used for the Tequesta Drum Circle. Volunteers will focus on clearing invasive plants from the trails near the Primitive Camp, so bring work gloves and bags for pulling invasives and picking up litter. After the service project, everyone returns to the picnic area to share a meal. For the potluck, consider contributing a salad, side, a lighter dessert, or beverages with ice. Organizers plan to provide hamburgers, chicken dogs, veggie burgers, condiments, and reusable plates, cups, utensils, and napkins. A refillable water bottle is encouraged since the park prioritizes reducing single use plastics. Dress for outdoor work among brush and plants with closed toe shoes, long pants and long sleeves, a hat, sunscreen, and insect repellent. You can also pack a swimsuit and towel if you would like to take a swim afterward. The day begins with a brief safety talk at the picnic tables, continues with trail work, and wraps up with a barbecue lunch back at the same spot. Participants will split into cooking and field work teams.
