A folk voice aligned with the lineage of Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan, and Billy Bragg, he blends sharp social commentary with humor and heart. He often jokes that he is a LeftNeck, a tree hugger who still watches NASCAR. His shows move easily from big laughs and bursts of applause to quiet moments of reflection. Critics have noted his ability to be darkly funny and deeply serious at once, and writer T. D. Allman has highlighted the humor, compassion, and wisdom in his songs alongside their clear-eyed social insight. He spent eleven years on a small island off Nicaragua’s Miskito Coast, where he introduced the first flush toilet, protected sea turtles, and built an eco-minded resort and dive shop. Returning to the United States in 2006, he found a country changed in ways that continue to shape his writing. His catalog includes 14 studio albums of primarily original material, with five produced by roots stalwart Gurf Morlix. A 2023 release reached number 16 in No Depression’s Readers Poll of the year’s top 20 roots albums. He is touring behind his new album, Code to Live By, which Robert Christgau awarded his highest A grade and characterized as the most explicitly left-leaning record he had encountered in quite some time. Peeples tours nationwide and is a frequent returnee to stages at festivals including Kerrville Folk Festival, Woody Guthrie Festival, Antlers & Acorns Songwriters Festival, Moccasin Creek Music Festival, and the Florida Folk Festival. FolkForum.nl has praised him as a quintessential American folk storyteller whose performances linger long after the final song.
