Proceeds also help provide a monthly accident-avoidance course that teaches life saving skills to teen drivers. The event’s impact extends further through a partnership with Kate’s Club, offering free monthly grief support for children and teens in Coweta County, and through five annual college scholarships of $1,500 each that emphasize safe driving awareness. 14th Annual RACE for the Orphans 5K

The event takes place at First Baptist Church and brings the community together in historic downtown Newnan, Georgia, to support RACE for the Orphans, Inc. Founded in 2013, the organization works to raise awareness, compassion, and education for the needs of more than 150 million orphans worldwide, with proceeds assisting area adopting families. The 5K features professional finish-line management and RFID chip timing by ORION Racing, powered by Start2Finish. The course is USATF certified (GA19094WC), and official results can be used to qualify for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution Peachtree Road Race. Top male and female 5K finishers receive medals and cash awards, with $500 for first place plus a free pair of shoes from Dragonfly Running Company, $250 for second, and $100 for third. Runners, walkers, and strollers are welcome. The lineup also includes a Tot Trot for ages 5 and under, Mia’s Mile Fun Run and Walk, the 5K on the certified route, and an awards ceremony. About one in eight women who reach age 80 will face it, and it accounts for roughly 30 percent of new cancers in women each year. City of Hope Cancer Center Atlanta is offering a special screening that includes 3D digital breast tomosynthesis mammograms along with educational materials to take home. Now in its second year, this free music and arts festival brings local history and culture to life with live sets hosted on historic home porches. Southern LitFest: Dink & Eric NeSmith

As part of Southern LitFest: Read All About It, the Newnan Carnegie Library Foundation and the Carnegie Library present an author talk and book signing with Dink and Eric NeSmith in Newnan. Dink NeSmith is a veteran newspaper publisher who began in journalism at age 10 by delivering The Jesup Sentinel by bicycle. At 24 he purchased a stake in the competing Wayne County Press, and four years later he joined Community Newspapers to acquire and combine the Sentinel and the Press. He is now a co-owner of Community Newspapers in Athens, a company that publishes more than two dozen newspapers across Georgia, Florida, and North Carolina. He is a past president of the Georgia Press Association and Leadership Georgia. His book, The Last Man To Let You Down, tells the story of his Depression-era father, an undertaker, and has been praised by Rick Bragg as a work of artful remembrance. Eric NeSmith, following in his father’s footsteps, became publisher of The Bitter Southerner in 2015, two years after the Athens-based independent media company began. What started as a digital magazine now releases three print issues each year, publishes books through BS Publishing, produces records with BS Records, hosts the Batch podcast, and offers apparel and home goods through the BS General Store. The website features narrative journalism and photographic essays and draws a nationwide audience. The program features an author talk and book signing.

A paint and trivia book club centered on The Knight and The Moth by Rachel Gillig combines a guided art session with conversation and a quiz about the story.
