Flora Ranis in the ON::View Artist Residency: April 9th - May 1st, 2026

ARTS Southeast hosts multidisciplinary artist and storyteller Flora Ranis for the ON::View Artist Residency. From the Everglades, Ranis explores the melted, hand-shaped qualities of the built world and how everyday signals shape culture. During this residency, she reimagines familiar elements of Savannah’s landscape as parts of a contemporary origin tale, intertwining them with local plants and animals. Working across sculpture, soil-based pieces, painting, poetry, and even chain link fencing, she transforms mass-produced objects, maps, road signs, and other common cues into abstract forms that encourage viewers to rethink the visual language that surrounds them. The project treats the built environment as living folklore and views culture as fluid and malleable, shaped daily by human hands and minds. Ranis earned a BA from Yale University, where she studied ethnic studies and learned welding. Her recent recognition includes an emerging artist fellowship from NE Sculpture & Gallery Factory, residencies at The Steel Yard and The Carving Studio and Sculpture Center, and awards such as the Boynes International Young Artist Award, the Bill May Furniture Scholarship, and the Metal Museum’s Carlsen Family Scholarship. Her work has appeared in solo and group exhibitions nationwide, including presentations at Stonewall National Museum and Yale University. She also has two sculptures on view at Meredith Sculpture Park with a group exhibition forthcoming at the Art Complex Museum. The residency features a meet and greet, an artist talk, and a culminating presentation in conjunction with Starland First Fridays. The ON::View Residency is supported by investment from the City of Savannah and by Georgia Council for the Arts through the Georgia General Assembly, with additional support from the National Endowment for the Arts. 48th Annual Savannah Scottish Games and Celtic Festival

Now in its 48th year, the Savannah Scottish Games and Celtic Festival celebrates Celtic heritage with a full day of music, athletics, dance, history, and family activities. The event draws more than 5,800 attendees annually and highlights a wide range of traditions and experiences. The music lineup features Seven Nations and Colin Grant-Adams alongside local bands Swamptooth and Lochlann. Massed pipe bands, solo piping and drumming competitions, and Highland dance performances fill the grounds with the sounds of Scotland. Athletic contests showcase over 50 competitors across seven traditional events, including the crowd-pleasing caber toss, plus tug of war and hurling competitions that continue throughout the day. Families can enjoy children’s clan passports, a kilted run, pint-sized athletics, crafts, games, and whimsical fairy encounters. Demonstrations with sheep and ducks, as well as birds of prey, add to the experience. A bustling Celtic marketplace features more than 30 vendors offering jewelry, kilts, Scottish and Irish goods, and art. Scottish clans and societies host over 30 booths where visitors can learn about Highland, Lowland, and Ulster Scots heritage, with genealogy tents available for exploring family roots. Food and drink options include traditional Scottish fare, local favorites, sweet treats, and beverages such as beer and mead. A whisky tasting offers six selections, and participants receive a Glencairn glass etched with the Savannah Scottish Games logo to take home. Living history presentations highlight Scottish influences in coastal Georgia dating back to 1735, with reenactors demonstrating daily life from earlier eras.

ON::View Meet & Greet: Hannah Keats

An artist meet and greet welcomes Hannah Keats, the May ON::View artist-in-residence, to Savannah. The location will be announced. Keats is a Tallahassee-based artist who creates biomorphic, sculptural paintings and installations shaped by influences from the natural world and science fiction. She recently earned an MFA in Studio Art from Florida State University and is exploring connections with marine ecosystems through sculptural painting. Her work has been recognized by The Nature Conservancy for contributions to shark conservation, she was selected for Fresh Squeezed 9 at the Morean Arts Center, and she is slated to present her first solo museum exhibition at the Bradbury Art Museum at Arkansas State University. Beyond the studio, she enjoys rock climbing and mountain biking. During the residency, Keats plans to develop an immersive installation that prompts conversation about how people relate to technology and the natural world. Combining digital printing, collage, laser cutting, and painting, she builds sculptural works that echo coral and fungi. Pieces will range from small paintings and lenticular prints to larger interventions that extend from wall to floor, enveloping viewers and drawing on world-building strategies from speculative fiction to explore the line between artificial and organic systems. The ON::View Residency is supported by investment from the City of Savannah and sponsored in part by Georgia Council for the Arts through appropriations of the Georgia General Assembly, with additional support from the National Endowment for the Arts. Local residency sponsors include Starlandia Supply, SCAD Museum of Art, Telfair Museums, Thompson Savannah, Green Truck Pub, and Starland Yard.

Reception: "In Place"

A reception at Laney Contemporary celebrates an exhibition that brings together the work of Jack Leigh and Parker Stewart, two photographers connected by the coastal landscapes of Georgia and South Carolina. Seen together in Savannah for the first time, their images trace change across marshes, tidal waterways, shrimping docks, and working communities. Co-curated by Stewart and gallerist Susan Laney, the exhibition marks the first presentation of Leigh’s photographs alongside a living photographer working in the same tradition, as well as the first significant showing of Leigh’s work in years. Leigh, a Savannah native known for evocative rural and coastal scenes, created the widely recognized photograph of Bonaventure Cemetery featured on the cover of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. Stewart, a SCAD graduate based in Savannah, began photographing the tidal region in recent years and soon realized he was revisiting many of the same out-of-the-way sites that drew Leigh a generation earlier. Their dialogue unfolds in paired moments, such as a water tower in Estill framed by silos that both artists photographed decades apart, and images from a McIntosh County shrimping dock where a once-working boat later lay half-submerged, echoing Leigh’s earlier scene. The exhibition reflects a coast in flux, where environmental and market pressures have reshaped livelihoods. Georgia’s shrimping fleet has diminished dramatically, oystering communities have waned, and Gullah/Geechee families face ongoing threats from development and property loss. Through distinct voices yet shared terrain, the photographs consider what fades, what endures, and how place binds memory across time. Krazian food truck will be on site for the reception.

Savannah-Community Breast Ultrasound Screening

At Magnolia Springs Family Practice, a community breast ultrasound screening by HerScan provides quick and affordable access to imaging that supports a proactive breast health plan. Ultrasound can detect cancers that mammography and physical exams alone might miss, and detection rates may increase from about 48 percent to as high as 97 percent, particularly for women with dense breasts. The experience is painless, uses no radiation, and is safe for those with implants. Each screening includes both breasts and the underarm area, along with a radiologist’s reading, and no prescription is required. The price is $295, noted as a value of up to $1,100.
