4-H Hands-On Summer Science Programs

Chatham County Extension 4-H leads a series of hands-on STEAM workshops in the new indoor classroom at the STEAM Center inside Savannah Children’s Museum. Designed for students ages 10 to 12, with older youth welcome, each session blends interactive activities with discovery-based learning to explore science, nature, genetics, conservation, and environmental topics. Participants may register for individual workshops or the full series. Highlights include an introduction to inherited and acquired traits using simple genetic tools like Punnett squares, an exploration of the essential role of pollinators and how to support them, practical plant identification using features such as leaf type and flower structure, and a focus on endangered species in Georgia and the habitats they depend on. Another session follows the movement of water through the environment, covering watersheds and the water cycle. Participation is included with museum admission, and Coastal Heritage Society members attend at no additional charge. Capacity is limited and pre-registration is required.

At the Jepson Center, families can drop in for hands-on art making inspired by the new CAM exhibition The World of William O. Golding. Each month features a fresh nautical project in the CAM family lounge. For August, participants can use signal flags to spell their names and design their own lighthouse. The program is included with museum admission and is free for Telfair members. August First Friday Festivities

The August edition of First Friday festivities in Starland at ARTS Southeast highlights continuing exhibition receptions, open studios, and extended hours in the on-site bookshop. Explore the ongoing reception for Rooted, a group show curated by Lisa Jaye Young of Savannah that features work by Cheryl Capezzuti of Pittsburgh, Susan Fuller of San Francisco, N. Masani Landfair of Atlanta, Anissa Mack of Brooklyn, and Samantha Mack of Savannah, presented in The Ellis Gallery. The Supporter Gallery continues with Figure/Ground, another group exhibition. The program also includes a culminating presentation from July’s ON::View artist in residence, John Fleissner of Milwaukee, along with open studios from downstairs studio members and a project finale by Incubator Artist Alex Mendi. John Fleissner in the ON::View Residency: July 9 - August 7, 2026

ARTS Southeast welcomes printmaker and muralist John Fleissner for the ON::View Artist Residency. His practice grows from organizing in the labor movement, and he uses art to strengthen working class social movements. He teaches printmaking in Milwaukee Public Schools and organizes with the Milwaukee Teachers Education Association in support of workers and students. During the residency, Fleissner will produce a large scale woodcut series centered on landmark moments in labor history, with attention to 1930s strikes such as the Toledo Auto-Lite strike, the Minneapolis Teamsters strike, and the San Francisco General Strike. He will also draw on research into working class organizing in the South, including the Southern Tenant Farmers Union. Alongside these works, he will create smaller linoleum cut posters that often circulate widely on picket lines, in public spaces, and in classrooms. Through community-facing engagements, he will connect printmaking traditions with social justice and collective action. The residency features a casual meet and greet, an artist talk, and a closing presentation held in conjunction with Starland First Fridays. The ON::View Residency is supported by investment from the City of Savannah and by Georgia Council for the Arts through appropriations of the Georgia General Assembly, with additional support from its partner agency, the National Endowment for the Arts. Local sponsors include Starlandia Supply, SCAD Museum of Art, Telfair Museums, Thompson Savannah, Green Truck Pub, and Starland Yard.

Loyalists & Liberty Exhibit Featuring American Revolutionary War Cannons

Savannah History Museum presents a new exhibition that brings Savannah’s Revolutionary War era to life through artifacts raised from the Savannah River near Old Fort Jackson in 2021 and 2022. After more than 200 years underwater, 17 restored cannons are on view alongside a wide range of recovered items. The display also includes two cannons shown just as they were found, three fragments of anchors, and additional pieces that help tell a fuller story of the past. Spanning about 3,000 square feet, the experience shares perspectives that recognize the diverse people involved in the Revolution, highlights Georgia’s role in the struggle, and adds depth to the region’s maritime history. Created to honor America’s 250th anniversary, the project reflects broad community support from businesses, heritage organizations, and individual contributors. Located across from Battlefield Memorial Park, which commemorates the 1779 Battle of Savannah, the museum setting offers meaningful context for exploring this chapter of American history. The exhibition is available during regular museum hours every day.

Drop Dead’s artists are offering hundreds of flash designs priced between $50 and $150, with a preview of designs to be shared soon. The event runs on a first come, first served basis. If waiting is not ideal, gift certificates in any amount will be available that day and can be used to get tattooed anytime throughout the year. All tattoo proceeds, including gift certificate purchases, are donated to Renegade Paws Rescue, and since the artists are donating their time and talent, tipping your artist is encouraged. 5th Annual Brett J Morris Avenger Foundation Defenders of Mental Health 5K

Now in its fifth year, this faith-centered 5K brings people together to champion mental health and support those living with PTSD. Guided by the idea of putting on spiritual armor, participants unite to raise awareness, push back against stigma, and move forward with courage, hope and healing. Attendees are encouraged to arrive in heroic gear, whether as a superhero, a real-life hero such as a first responder, health care provider or member of the military, or a faith-inspired character with capes, masks, shields, crosses or armor-themed touches. Teams and groups can form Hero Squads with matching bib stickers and enjoy group shout-outs and photos. A spirited costume contest highlights standout defenders, faith-driven heroes, imaginative looks, squad pride and entries that elevate mental health awareness. On-site experiences include the Shield Wall photo station with props for memorable shots, an Armor Up station where participants select a wristband or sticker that reflects faith, hope, courage or strength, and a Prayer Shield Wall where names and intentions can be added to be lifted up by volunteers during the race. Before race day, an online hero name generator helps participants discover a Defender identity to add to the Hero Name Wall, and stories can be shared on social media using the event’s hashtags. Registration options include early bird, open and late tiers priced at $40, $50 and $60, with a virtual registration option available as well.
