Breath Core Lift

Breath Core Lift is a full-body training class that weaves functional breathing with core and pelvic floor reconditioning and strength work to help you feel strong, supported, and in control of how your body moves. Rather than chasing intensity, the session teaches you to link breath, core, and pelvic floor for better stability, less pain, and smoother movement. Each week features a total-body lift with a specific skill focus so you can build confidence over time, rotating through key patterns like shoulder press, hinge, push-up, and squat. Expect purposeful exercises and calm, controlled transitions with attention to form, alignment, and coordination instead of speed. The aim is a solid foundation that carries into everyday life, whether you are lifting weights, keeping up with kids, or moving through your day more comfortably. Options are offered for every movement, making it approachable if you are dealing with pain, core or pelvic floor symptoms, or are just beginning. Held in the second-floor studio at the Downtown Davenport (Bittner) YMCA. Iowa Mississippi Valley YMCA members can attend at no cost.

Smithsonian Lecture

Dr. Abeer Saha explores how to tell the story of the United States at its 250th year through the Smithsonian exhibition American Aspirations, focusing on the enduring gap between the ideals of the Declaration of Independence and everyday experience. The talk considers history and hope together, noting how the space between promise and reality has often powered change. Drawing from the Smithsonian’s vast collections, the exhibition highlights objects that keep complexity intact rather than smoothing it away. Thomas Jefferson’s writing desk, Harriet Tubman’s hymnal, and a handwritten speech by Martin Luther King Jr. are set in conversation to show how expansive visions, displacement, innovation, entrepreneurship, and inequality intersect. The guiding principle is candor over nostalgia or present-day point scoring, with the goal of strengthening dialogue and democracy. Presented at the Putnam GIANT Screen Theater, and admission is free.

Cinco de Mayo Chess Tournament in memory of Roger Kromphardt & Tony Britton

A community chess tournament at Western Illinois University–Quad Cities honors the memories of Roger Kromphardt and Tony Britton. Organized by the Western Illinois Chess Club, it welcomes players of all ages, and US Chess Federation membership is required for every section. The Open section also serves as a Mini-Qualifier for Iowa State Chess Association Grand Prix points. Players choose from three sections. The Open features a four-round Swiss with G/65, 5-second delay. The Reserve section, for players rated under 1400, uses a four-round Swiss with G/60, 5-second delay. The Beginner/Youth section, for players rated under 800, plays a four-round Swiss at G/20 with no delay. Open and Reserve include a lunch break, and rounds may begin early when a prior round finishes and all players agree. Beginner/Youth games proceed as soon as possible with a break roughly between the third and fourth rounds. Registration includes coffee, snacks, and lunch. Fees are as follows: Open is $35 in advance online or $40 cash-only in person the same day, Reserve is $25 in advance online or $30 cash-only in person the same day, and Beginner/Youth is $20 in advance online or $25 cash-only in person the same day. On-site registration is available, and adults, young adults, and students can receive a $3 discount when registering through the club’s affiliation. Prizes are awarded in every section. The Open offers $150 for first, $100 for second, $75 for third, and $50 for fourth. The Reserve awards $100 for first, $75 for second, and $50 for third. The Beginner/Youth section presents trophies for places one through five, with participation medals for places six through twenty. Equipment and notation requirements vary by section. Boards and clocks are supplied for Beginner/Youth games. Players in the Open and Reserve must bring a regulation board and clock, and must keep score in algebraic notation using provided scoresheets. Electronic scoresheets are not allowed. Standard tournament procedures and etiquette apply. Use one hand to move and press the clock, follow touch-move, announce j’adoube before adjusting a piece, and promote immediately upon reaching the promotion square. After moving, press the clock to complete the turn. If an illegal move occurs, stop the clock and call the Tournament Director, and a time penalty will be applied in accordance with event policy. Outside assistance, books, and phones are prohibited during play, and conversations should be limited to the opponent or the Tournament Director, with quiet maintained in the playing area. Disputes are handled through the Tournament Director. Parents and guardians are responsible for young players and must remain on site. Light snacks and coffee are available in the waiting area. By registering, participants agree that event photos may be used for promotion, and local media may occasionally visit. Tournament Directors are Eric Vigil and Mariela Treviño.

EARTH TONGUE w/PINK FUZZ

Earth Tongue take the stage with special guests Pink Fuzz for a high-energy bill of heavy psych and high speed desert rock. The Wellington, New Zealand duo of guitarist Gussie Larkin and drummer Ezra Simons craft fuzz-drenched riffs and off-center rhythms that turn their shows into immersive eruptions. Their debut album Floating Being on Stolen Body Records became an underground favorite and sent them touring across Australasia and Europe. After a run with Ty Segall they signed to In The Red Records, the Los Angeles rock and roll label known for releases from Thee Oh Sees, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Wand and Ty Segall, and followed up with Great Haunting, written during lockdown while devouring 70s and 80s horror. The nine-track release channels doom-soaked intensity and a huge sound from only guitar, drums and raw vocals. They have played more than 50 shows throughout Europe and the UK and have shared stages with Queens of the Stone Age, IDLES, Ty Segall, Acid King, Brant Bjork and Kikagaku Moyo, delivering concerts that balance crushing weight with memorable hooks. Pink Fuzz arrive as a sibling-led trio from Denver featuring John Demitro on guitar and vocals, LuLu Demitro on bass and vocals, and Will Trafas on drums. The band built a nationwide DIY touring network and a grassroots following, and their latest material points toward a new album produced by Kevin Mckeown of Black Pistol Fire and mixed by Alain Johannes, whose credits include Queens of the Stone Age, Chris Cornell, PJ Harvey and Arctic Monkeys. Their self-styled high speed desert rock is fast, dynamic and forceful, and the release Resolution drew praise from The Obelisk for both songwriting and musicianship. Following a string of singles and a 25-date support run with The Sword and Rickshaw Billies Burger Patrol, their live show has tightened further, earning a 4 out of 5 nod from Metal Epidemic for tight energy, shimmering melody, adventurous guitar work and hypnotic sibling harmonies over stoner, doom and psych textures.

Outlet Programme & Ragged Records Present: DERYA YILDRIM & GRUP ŞIMŞEK at Rozz-Tox

Outlet Programme and Ragged Records present an evening at Rozz-Tox with Derya Yıldırım & Grup Şimşek, with an opening act to be announced. Led by multi-instrumentalist Derya Yıldırım, the ensemble blends Anatolian folk traditions with a contemporary psychedelic edge, centering the sound of the bağlama while keeping time-honored melodies at the core. The band formed after Yıldırım connected with French collaborators Graham Mushnik and Antonin Voyant, and later added drummer Helen Wells in 2021. They describe their cross-border aesthetic as outernational, honoring classic lyrics and tunes while giving them new energy. After several self-produced releases, the group signed with New York’s Big Crown Records in 2024 and partnered with producer Leon Michels on Yarın Yoksa, an album that pairs original compositions with reinterpreted folk songs, its title meaning If There Is No Tomorrow.
