The trip wraps up at the Athletic Club with sunset views over the Fox River, S’mores by the campfire, and a relaxed chance to connect with fellow paddlers. The experience begins at the Aurora Athletic Club, where participants park before a shuttle ride to North Aurora Island Park. On arrival, paddles and properly fitted personal flotation devices are provided, followed by dryland instruction covering how to move in a straight line, steer, stop, and stay comfortable and upright. A guide assists with launching, then the group heads out on the water. Participants must be at least 15 years old and weigh a minimum of 100 pounds. Children riding in a tandem kayak with an adult must weigh at least 30 pounds and be able to follow directions. Howling Wolfe Canoe and Kayak supplies the kayak, PFD, shuttle, paddle, guide, S’mores, and the sunset scenery.

Paddle the Fox River on a six mile route that includes a portage. The day starts with land-based coaching in essential kayaking techniques from an experienced instructor, then continues on the water for a naturalist-led exploration of the local ecology. The group meets at McCullough Park. Participants park at the take-out and are transported to the launch site. This session is designed for intermediate paddlers. Boaters must be at least 16 years old, able to hold their breath underwater while wearing a properly fitted life jacket, turn from face down to face up while keeping the head above water, communicate effectively with the instructor and other participants, and manage mobility and personal care on their own or with a companion’s assistance. Registration is required at least one week in advance. The fee is $89 per person with use of a kayak, personal flotation device, and paddle included, or $45 per person if bringing your own kayak.

This volunteer initiative coordinates visits to senior centers, schools, and other places where people benefit from the calming presence of animals, and it requires a minimum commitment of 2 hours per month.
