Kickin’ It at the Iron Works

Explore Route 66 history at Joliet Iron Works Historic Site on a self-guided walk among the stone foundations of a steel works that once led the way when the highway was newly paved. In celebration of Route 66’s centennial, Forest Preserve staff will share stories about the people who lived, worked and traveled this historic corridor. Watch a blacksmith at work as metal is shaped into practical tools, and visit the preserve shelter to view historic photographs and picture the site in its prime. This free program welcomes all ages, and you can move through the site at whatever pace you prefer. The route spans about one mile on paved, accessible walkways. Parking is limited, so consider walking, biking or carpooling. Anyone who requires an auxiliary aid or service to participate should submit a request at least 48 hours before the program.
