The Barker MansionThe Hush After the Storm: Evoking Serenity and Purpose from the Landscape. By Dennis Maloney
Painter and veteran Dennis Maloney presents The Hush After the Storm: Evoking Serenity and Purpose from the Landscape, an exhibition tracing five years of landscape study as a pastime grows into a disciplined daily practice and a renewed sense of self. The work inhabits the quiet that follows upheaval, when light returns, the air clears, and breathing comes easily. In that calm, serenity feels earned and purpose seems to rise from the land itself. Visitors can follow a clear evolution, from early canvases with forceful marks, dense layering, and intense color nearing the psychedelic, to later pieces defined by more natural palettes, clearer drawing, and composed, restful space. Taken together, the paintings move from experimentation and restlessness to images that hold stillness and clarity. An opening reception will be held at The Rising Phoenix Gallery in a relaxed atmosphere, offering chances to talk with the artist and connect with community members. Admission is free and open to all.

Laporte Civic CenterThe Macabre
Hosted by The Rising Phoenix Gallery, this group exhibition leans into the shadowy side of imagination, inviting visitors to find beauty, tension, and curiosity in works that embrace the eerie and the uncanny. Salem Slater, Sophia Rapata, Dennis Maloney, and Katherine Cundiff present varied approaches that contemplate mortality, mystery, folklore, inner disquiet, and the lyrical unknown, turning traditionally dark subject matter into vivid visual narratives that are both striking and contemplative. Rather than centering on fear, the show celebrates the pull of the strange and obscured spaces where imagination deepens, emotions heighten, and storytelling comes alive. An opening and artist reception offers free, all-ages access to see the exhibition, meet participating artists, and enjoy art, conversation, and community. It signals the start of the gallery’s fall season and pairs well with a Michigan City visit.
