Mansion After Hours: Conservation Conversation

Reviving a mansion at this scale demands more than skilled hands, it calls for investigation, patience, and precision. This after-hours program opens the door to the real work of restoration through an interactive, behind-the-scenes conversation with Chris Grohs of Terrawood Designs, the craftsperson behind much of the mansion’s restoration. Designed as a Q&A tour, it starts with audience questions and keeps the dialogue going from start to finish, encouraging a close look at the techniques, hurdles, and discoveries that emerged over five years of hands-on work. Arrive with curiosity to see preservation in action. Program length may vary slightly based on attendance and other factors. The program begins promptly at the scheduled start time. Guests may arrive up to 15 minutes before the program, and earlier entry cannot always be accommodated.

This first LaPorte County Community Engagement Committee meeting for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s brings together local team captains, volunteers, community members, and anyone interested in growing the LaPorte County Walk and supporting families affected by Alzheimer’s and other dementia. Conversation will focus on shaping the committee, identifying where help is needed, and simple ways to build momentum, such as reconnecting with past teams, welcoming new teams, building community connections, and sharing the Walk with local businesses and organizations so more people feel connected to the mission. There is no expectation of a large commitment, and every idea, connection, invitation, and helping hand makes a difference. The annual St Joe Summer Festival brings live music, food, and a welcoming atmosphere. Friday night features the Jim Post Band. Saturday spotlights Little Lover, an ACDC band. An island-inspired outdoor movie night comes to Stone Lake as the Movies in the Park series presents Lilo & Stitch. LaPorte County Animal Control and the Jane Bernard Animal Adoption Center will also be on site to share information about adoptable pets. Admission is free for all. Hairbanger's Ball

History Hour: The Glessner House and the Family who Shaped It

This program explores the history of the Glessner family and their landmark home in Chicago’s South Loop, recognized as a National Historic Landmark. Designed by architect H. H. Richardson and regarded as his urban residential masterpiece, the house was rescued from demolition in 1966, fully restored, and still contains most of its original furnishings. It is considered to have the most complete presentation of William Morris interiors of any house open to the public in the United States. The presentation is led by William Tyre, Executive Director and Curator of Glessner House since October 2007. A Chicago native with a master’s degree in historic preservation from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, he is the author of Chicago’s Historic Prairie Avenue, published in 2008, and Frances Glessner Lee and the Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death, published in 2019. He resides in the Town of Pullman, a National Historical Park on Chicago’s Far South Side, where he has restored an 1881 manager’s house.

The Macabre

Hosted by The Rising Phoenix Gallery, this group exhibition leans into the shadowy side of imagination, inviting visitors to find beauty, tension, and curiosity in works that embrace the eerie and the uncanny. Salem Slater, Sophia Rapata, Dennis Maloney, and Katherine Cundiff present varied approaches that contemplate mortality, mystery, folklore, inner disquiet, and the lyrical unknown, turning traditionally dark subject matter into vivid visual narratives that are both striking and contemplative. Rather than centering on fear, the show celebrates the pull of the strange and obscured spaces where imagination deepens, emotions heighten, and storytelling comes alive. An opening and artist reception offers free, all-ages access to see the exhibition, meet participating artists, and enjoy art, conversation, and community. It signals the start of the gallery’s fall season and pairs well with a Michigan City visit.

Whiskey Friends - The Morgan Wallen Experience at Live at the Lakefront

Live at the Lakefront teams up with Harbor Country Adventures and JL Entertainment to present Whiskey Friends with The Morgan Wallen Experience at the outdoor Millennium Plaza Bandstand next to the Old Lighthouse Museum on Lake Michigan. All ages are welcome, and children under 12 are admitted free with an adult. Free parking is available. VIP tables and tickets are sold in pairs and include reserved seating and table service, and prices increase at the gate on the day of the show. A full bar will be open, and no outside food or beverages are allowed. Bring lawn chairs or blankets for the designated area. The venue is ADA accessible, non smoking, and does not permit large bags or coolers. Events proceed rain or shine unless severe weather requires otherwise.
