    Shinyribs and more

The Birchmere, 3701 Mount Vernon Ave, Alexandria · verified Sep 27
    See details

Shinyribs brings its Austin-rooted, genre-blending sound to The Birchmere, with Patrick Sweany appearing in a solo performance. Guided by Kevin Russell, the group folds Texas songcraft with East Texas blues, Louisiana swamp rhythm, honky tonk, Oklahoma swing, Cajun colors from the Golden Triangle, and an Arkansas-flavored jazz streak into a distinctive voice that balances big energy with heart. The current compact Shortribs setup is built to spotlight Russell’s songwriting and vocals alongside playful, high-spirited stage antics and tightly arranged grooves that make room for both laughter and reflection. The band features Keith Langford on drums, a longtime collaborator from The Gourds; Mason Hankamer on bass, who also co-produced the last three Shinyribs albums and serves as musical director; the Delta Dawns vocalists Kellee Broadway, who adds percussion, and Schaefer Llana, who also plays guitar; Eric Baker on piano; and Cat Clemons on lead guitar and pedal steel. Expect a set that moves from wink-and-nod humor to stories touching on family, loss, grief, and love, uniting joy and melancholy with deep soul and easygoing grace.

    West Side Story

The Center for the Arts, 4400 University Dr, Fairfax · verified Sep 27
    See details

Two ensembles chart a path across the wind band tradition, one grounded in folk memory and lyric line, the other moving from Bach’s architecture to Bernstein’s streets, and they meet at an energized center. The Mason Symphonic Band begins with music that leans in to its sources: Calvin Custer’s Variations on Scarborough Fair refracts an old ballad into fresh colors, Frank Erickson’s Air for Band slows the pace in favor of breath and stillness, and Frank Ticheli’s Cajun Folksongs turns south toward Louisiana syncopation and dance-floor heat, with folk tunes reimagined through inventive spirit. The Mason Wind Symphony answers with connection through contrast. Two faces of Bach set the tone, the reflective Fervent is My Longing alongside the clear architecture of the Little Fugue in G Minor, a reminder that structure can be its own beauty. Nicole Piunno’s With Love and Grace brings a contemporary, lyrical voice. Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story, arranged by Paul Lavender, closes the program with rivalry, romance, and raw city energy gathered into an enduring American musical theater score. Together the two programs span centuries and styles and show the wind band alive in all its variety.
