'Evolution in an Hour' with Bill Portela
Bill Portela leads a one hour exploration of the human journey, drawing on his book and up to date scientific insights. The talk weaves Darwin’s ideas on natural selection with stories from nature, wildlife, and animal behavior. It examines how living systems assemble into greater complexity across vast stretches of time, presenting evidence that cooperation among molecules, species, and entire kingdoms has been vital to the emergence of advanced life. The program concludes by tracing how deep rooted instincts continue to influence today’s cultures. Portela connects nature, evolutionary science, and Freudian psychology to patterns seen in society. His experience includes work as a systems engineer, science teacher, wildlife rehabilitator, and breeder of draft horses, and he has shared these perspectives at senior colleges and libraries in Maine. The session frames evolution as the study of intertwined biological relationships, why they falter, and how they prosper.
