'Evolution in an Hour' with Bill Portela

Bill Portela leads a one hour exploration of the human journey, drawing on his book and up to date scientific insights. The talk weaves Darwin’s ideas on natural selection with stories from nature, wildlife, and animal behavior. It examines how living systems assemble into greater complexity across vast stretches of time, presenting evidence that cooperation among molecules, species, and entire kingdoms has been vital to the emergence of advanced life. The program concludes by tracing how deep rooted instincts continue to influence today’s cultures. Portela connects nature, evolutionary science, and Freudian psychology to patterns seen in society. His experience includes work as a systems engineer, science teacher, wildlife rehabilitator, and breeder of draft horses, and he has shared these perspectives at senior colleges and libraries in Maine. The session frames evolution as the study of intertwined biological relationships, why they falter, and how they prosper.

Grandma Gatewood Took a Walk

Catherine Bush’s play brings to life the true story of Emma “Grandma” Gatewood, who at age 67 set out in 1955 with a simple duffel, a shower curtain to keep dry, and a pair of Keds to walk the Appalachian Trail. She completed more than two thousand miles from Georgia to Maine’s Mt. Katahdin, becoming the first woman to hike the trail solo across 14 states. Premiering in New England, this production highlights resilience, perseverance, and the bravery of stepping into the unknown. The content is best suited to audiences in the PG-13 range, and a content advisory is available. Select performances include a post-show conversation with the cast and director, and some dates feature lobby tastings, including wine courtesy of DaVinci’s Eatery and Central Distributors and beer courtesy of Baxter Brewing, Co. Tickets are $35 for adults, $30 for groups of 10 or more, $20 for 35 Below, and $15 for youth ages 13 to 18. A $4 facility fee is added to each order, and listed prices include applicable ticket fees. Group sales are available at 782-3200. Assistive listening and accessible seating are available upon request. Run time will be announced. Sponsored by Alice’s Awesome Adventures, Androscoggin Bank, and Schooner Estates, with media support from Maine Public.

Pottery Wheel Thurs June 25th $59

Learn the pottery wheel in a two-step format that takes your work from wet clay to finished pieces. The first visit focuses on throwing, where you can make up to three items such as a cup, bowl, or vase using three balls of clay, each about 1 and 1/4 pounds. After this session your creations are kiln fired. You will then come back in about two to three weeks to apply glaze, after which everything is fired again, and a final visit is needed to pick up your finished pottery. For the wheel, you can request as much guidance as you like or work completely independently. Making more than three pieces is possible, with each extra item costing $10 to cover glazing and firing. Please plan to return within 30 days to glaze all items, and be sure to collect finished work within the stated 30-day window, since unclaimed pieces may be discarded due to limited storage. Short fingernails are helpful. Wear clothes that can get messy, and bring an old towel or rag for your hands. The class is limited to five people. The fee is $59. In 2025, classes sold out two to three weeks in advance. When purchasing a slot, do not enter a shipping address.
