At YDL-Michigan, The STEAM Scene creates a welcoming space to experiment, build, and explore through rotating themes. Participants can pick up new skills with Legos, use educational tools to practice core STEAM ideas, make art in inventive ways, and even interact with live animals. This session highlights LEGO SPIKE for hands-on creativity and problem solving. Topics in the broader series include computational thinking with the Pokémon Trading Card Game, a Leslie Nature Center visit on cold-blooded creatures, connections between music, art, and science, barbershop computing with clippers and physical computing, the science of sewing, exploring STEAM tools, an intro to 3D printing miniseries, a look at tornadoes with the EMU STEMEd Institute, natural science exploration, and a comics workshop led by local creator Kamron Reynolds. Some multi-day offerings, such as Barbershop Computing and the Intro to 3D Printing miniseries, require registration.

There is no preset program, no pressure, and no expectations. Participants shape the discussion, exploring experiences and questions around death and dying in whatever way feels right. It is not a grief support group or counseling session, yet the space is held with care and respect for every person and perspective. You are welcome to speak, simply listen, or observe quietly if that feels best your first time. Tea, water, and light snacks are provided, so there is nothing to bring beyond yourself. Attendance is free, with optional donations. Conversations are free of ideology, supportive, respectful, inclusive of all identities, and confidential. This event takes place at Bloodroot Herb Shop. Free of their script, they must contend with monsters, tricky puzzles, and even a few existential quandaries, learning to work together while questioning what is truly programmed and what is possible. Kochmanski creates stories at the crossroads of people and technology. Beyond fiction he is a biotechnology data scientist focused on cancer treatments, holds a PhD in toxicology with an emphasis on gene environment interactions, and is interested in how the built world shapes human health and evolution. He lives in Ann Arbor with his family and enjoys running, travel, scary movies, and time spent chasing a toddler.

An ecstatic dance gathering focused on somatic release offers a welcoming and inclusive space to move, reset, and re-energize. Doors open for arrival and settling in, followed by an opening circle to set intentions, awaken with music, and begin somatic release. Please plan to arrive before the opening circle, after which doors are locked. The evening concludes with a closing circle for reflection and shared insights. The cost is $20 to $35 at the door, with cash preferred and a Venmo option available. If price is a concern, volunteer opportunities can help make participation possible. Advance registration is encouraged. Absolute beginners are welcome and no partner is needed. Wear comfortable layers that allow free movement. Many people dance in socks, and clean shoes or bare feet are also fine on the hardwood floor. Cushions, mats, and props are available. This container is consent based and sober, with no conversation while dancing, a nonjudgmental atmosphere, and no photography or video during the open dance. Music from around the world spans instrumental, electronic, and vocal styles, guiding a wave that can help release tension, calm anxiety, and support emotional processing before settling into stillness.

The Blind PigThe 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
Horizon Performing Arts presents a playful stage production at Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre at U of M, where six young adolescents vie for a coveted spelling title. Between rounds they share humorous and touching glimpses into their home lives while tackling ever trickier, sometimes concocted words. A single bell tone marks a miss, the tension rises with each attempt, and in the end only one competitor walks away as champion while the rest find consolation in a juice box. Families can use any participating site, and eligibility is based on age rather than residency or school enrollment. Service is for children 18 and under, with eligibility also extending to individuals up to age 26 who are enrolled in a state‑recognized education program. 16th Annual Ton-Up Ypsi Motorcycle & Music Festival
Ton-Up celebrates its Sweet 16 with a free, all-ages, rain or shine motorcycle and music festival featuring food, door prizes, a bike show, and live performances from Michigan bands to be announced. You do not need to ride to take part, as the day centers on great music, vendors, and beverages alongside a close-up look at vintage and custom machines. Craft beverages and food are provided by Arbor Brewing Company and Corner Brewery. DJ Del Villarreal of WCBN FM and Motorbilly Radio serves as master of ceremonies and keeps the energy up with roots rock between sets. Expect a wide range of vendors offering clothing, gear, art, ice cream, coffee, and more. The bike show welcomes every kind of build, from customs and modified to vintage imports, mopeds, scooters, and even works in progress. Entry is $15, with one-of-a-kind handmade and pinstriped trophies on the line. Low Key D&D for Adults
Set in YDL-Michigan, Meeting Room 2, this nine-week Dungeons and Dragons mini campaign offers a relaxed path into the game for adults at any experience level. Guest Dungeon Master Terance Gordon, a 2025-26 Teaching Artist with 826michigan, guides participants through approachable mechanics, character creation, and imaginative world exploration. Each session builds on the previous one, yet it remains possible to drop in even if weekly attendance is not feasible. Registration is required so materials can be prepared in advance. All supplies are provided, including dice, character sheets, and the rules needed to play. Space is limited to six participants. If interest exceeds capacity, a separate group may be organized to run a parallel session. Those with DM experience who would like to volunteer can note that during registration. These standard practice sessions rotate through different topics, and the focus for August is staff training with two-handed weapons. The class moves through three phases, beginning with drills and skill development, followed by instruction on the monthly theme, and concluding with either open floor time or choreography work. First-time intro classes are free. After that, drop-in attendance is $25, and memberships are available to reduce the cost per class. Attendance is limited due to Covid precautions. Since the training takes place indoors, masks that fully cover the mouth and nose are required without exception. Participants are asked to contact the organizers in advance if they plan to attend.

His commitment to jazz has expanded ever since, and this performance reflects that journey.

All ages may attend, and anyone 16 or younger must remain with an accompanying adult for the entire dance. The room is quite dark and the sound is loud, so please consider what will best support your child’s comfort. Bring water, a yoga mat for stretching if you like, a small pillow or bolster for sitting during circles, and earplugs if you are sensitive to sound. Outdoor shoes are not allowed on the dance floor, though clean indoor shoes are fine. Free lot parking is available. The Tallest Man On Earth brings his fall tour to Ann Arbor for a two night stop, presented with support from ann arbor's 107one. Known for a lively stage presence that ranges from quick footwork to crouches and stretches, he pairs nimble guitar playing with an intimate delivery. Listeners often hear echoes of Bob Dylan in his writing and voice, and his early discoveries of Dylan’s catalog opened the door to folk pioneers like Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie. Even with those influences, he remains intent on following his own instincts in how he plays and writes. His 2023 album Henry St. marked his first time recording with a full band, capturing a wide palette of sounds and a renewed sense of confidence and playfulness after time away. The result points to an artist grounded in folk tradition yet unmistakably his own.

The state’s biggest music swap meet returns to Ann Arbor at the Eastern Michigan University Student Center, offering a lively buy, sell, and trade marketplace for all things musical. A diverse mix of participants takes part, including musicians at every level, collectors, luthiers, inventors, and current or former shop owners. Tables feature new, used, vintage, custom, and handmade instruments, along with amplifiers and accessories available for purchase or trade. Vendors will have gear on hand, and attendees may also bring their own instruments and equipment to sell or exchange. Many people carry items with them, use a small cart for heavier pieces, or make occasional trips to their car. More than a marketplace, it is a chance to reconnect with bandmates, meet new collaborators, and build relationships within a community united by a shared passion for making music. Admission is $15 per person at the door.
