Weekly LBP Party Ride!

A laid back but lively group ride rolls out from Lansing Bike Co-op for a spin around the city and nearby areas. Routes change each week and are shared ahead of time. Expect roughly 15 to 20 miles at an easy cruising pace around 10 to 12 miles per hour, with occasional stretches closer to 13 or 14. Riders should be reasonably fit, on a dependable bike, and comfortable navigating rough pavement and hills. The ride typically happens when temperatures are above 40 degrees in fair conditions, even if an official post has not gone up. The flow usually includes about an hour of pedaling, a social break, a stop for food and drinks, then a return to the starting point. Night riding is common, so front and rear lights are important. Evenings can cool off, so a light jacket helps. Music and cheerful bell ringing are welcome. Many participants carry water, snacks, basic tools, and a spare tube. Safety and courtesy are central to the experience. Follow the ride leader, stay together, and ride predictably. Please avoid sprinting off the front, drifting far behind, stopping in the lane, or startling others. This is a long running series with hundreds of past rides, and there are additional outings on other days with different styles.

As the night unfolds, visitors may see moths, beetles, lacewings, and other species congregate on illuminated sheets. Multiple light stations will be placed throughout the garden, and guests can move between them to compare what is active in different areas. Summer Solstice Sound Ceremony and Song Circle

Katy Joe and special guests lead a summer solstice gathering that honors the longest day of the year. The experience begins with intention setting and gentle breathwork, then moves into a sound ceremony followed by a communal song circle that celebrates the gifts of the season. A sound ceremony invites ritual, release, and renewal through vibration and tone. Participants rest with their solstice intention while immersed in the resonance of crystal bowls, bells, chimes, strings, Tibetan bowls, gongs, and more. Afterward, voices are welcomed into the circle as attendees add their own songs alongside the presenters. No prior singing or musical experience is needed, and all voices are welcome. Come prepared to relax and receive the gift of sound. No physical practice is required, and space is limited for an intimate experience. Special guests include Liberty, a sound facilitator with more than 250 hours of training in sound healing, somatics, and nervous system regulation through the Sound Healing Academy in the UK and The Forest Path in Guatemala. Her approach uses sound to support deep relaxation, ease the nervous system, and invite the body’s innate capacity for healing and restoration. Eric and Shannon recently relocated to Michigan from Richmond, Virginia, where they fostered community through regular song circles and shared musical experiences. Focused on connection, creativity, and the power of singing together, they facilitate welcoming spaces for collective song.

Relatives You Didn’t Know You Had by Jane Rosemont

Color, texture, and whatever images are within reach guide each move as unrelated pieces start to connect. Through this open process, fragments often resolve into a face or a figure, prompting questions about identity and kinship... a stranger, an unexpected relation, or even the viewer. The exhibition invites each person to discover meaning shaped by personal experience and a sense of place within humanity. An opening reception accompanies the show, and the work is on view at Nelson Gallery.

Weekly LBP Party Ride!

Start from Lansing Bike Co-op for a relaxed, spirited spin through the city and nearby areas. Routes are shared during the week, and the ride typically covers about 15 to 20 miles at an average pace around 10 to 12 mph, sometimes a bit quicker. Riders should be in good condition, on a dependable bike, and comfortable with rough pavement and climbs. The outing usually includes roughly an hour of pedaling, a social break, a stop for food and beverages, then the return. Night riding is common, so bring lights and a jacket for cooler temperatures. Pack snacks, water, basic tools, and a spare tube. Music on boomboxes and bell ringing are welcome. The group rides in decent weather when temperatures are above 40 degrees, whether or not an official post appears. Safety and courtesy are priorities. Follow the leader, listen, and stay together while avoiding sprinting off the front, lagging far behind, stopping in the roadway, or startling others. With many years and hundreds of rides behind it, the group emphasizes cooperative riding and positive interactions with neighbors and drivers. Additional rides occur on other days with different styles, and community members can share or propose rides in coordination with the group’s admins.

Going Medieval! - Two comedic plays from the 1400s

Two comic plays from the 1400s are presented in the outdoor amphitheater at Lansing Community College, directed by Paige Dunckel. The Second Shepherd’s Play, part of the Wakefield Mystery Cycle, follows three shepherds on the eve of the Nativity and blends sacred storytelling with local humor, originating from the late 1400s when cycle plays traveled through towns and villages. Mankind, written around 1470, is a morality play in which the title character is drawn toward wrongdoing by figures who personify common vices, a work known for its bold humor and a history of stirring debate. Together these productions offer a lively window into medieval theater and its mix of faith, satire, and community tradition.

Music and the Garden: Tayovan Trio

Presented by the MSU College of Music and Beal Botanical Garden, this outdoor Music and the Garden series brings together music, nature, and community. The season spotlights Beal’s Rewilding initiative, with each program engaging one of the four classical elements—Air, Water, Fire, and Earth—while illuminating Michigan native plants, their roles in local ecosystems, and their ties to human history. Performances are shaped by each theme and offer ways to explore environmentally sustainable practices for everyday life. This edition centers on Earth, linking music to origins, place, and the roots of artistic expression. Hands-on activities are offered before the performance, and visitors may bring chairs or blankets. If weather requires, the performance will move indoors to the MSU Music Building. Admission is free, and any ticket link functions as registration only. The featured ensemble, the Tayovan Trio, takes its name from the Siraya word Tayouan, meaning that piece of land, reflecting a shared connection to place. Formed by three Taiwanese musicians who are doctoral performance students at the MSU College of Music, the trio is active in orchestral, wind band, and chamber settings. Their programs reflect cultural identity and artistic curiosity, with a commitment to sharing meaningful contemporary music across communities. Members are Hannah Hsu, violin, Te-Fen Cheng, clarinet, and Shih-Wen Chiu, piano.
