The Poetry Room Presents Native Child Youth Slam

At The Robin Theatre, ten local student poets step into a three-round youth slam, sharing only original work on a single stage. Performers may read from the page or recite from memory, and they rely on voice and movement without props, costumes, or instruments. Each poem is limited to three minutes with a brief grace period, and small point deductions are applied for exceeding the limit. Timing begins when the poet first engages the audience, as determined by the bout manager. Scoring uses a 0 to 10 scale with one decimal, and totals from the first two rounds determine who advances. The field narrows from ten poets to five, then to the top two for a final head-to-head. Ties in the early rounds are resolved by dropped scores. In the last bout, judges select the winner rather than awarding numerical scores. Performance order is drawn at random in the first two rounds, and a coin toss decides the final round order, called by the poet with the higher cumulative score or decided by a draw if those totals are even. Prizes include $500 and a trophy belt for the champion, $250 for second place, and $100 for each remaining participant. This free, donation-based event is supported in part by the Arts Council of Greater Lansing. Judges and the full poet lineup will be announced.

Signing Day Saturday: Indie Bookstore Day Edition

Schuler Books in Okemos presents an Indie Bookstore Day edition of Signing Day Saturday that highlights independent authors from across Michigan in an easygoing open house format. The setup allows casual conversations with writers and opportunities to have books signed, with featured appearances by Amy Dua and Steve Rheaume. One featured children’s title follows woodland animals as warmer weather returns, pairing colorful illustrations with engaging rhymes to explore what animals, insects, and people do in spring. Geared to ages 2 through 8, it introduces the seasons while showing the work that helps sustain the cycle of life. Amy Dua is the author and illustrator of the Woe is Me…The Seasons series and brings years of experience advocating for children in Michigan. She grew up in Buffalo and now lives and works in East Lansing with her family, and when not creating her books she enjoys reading, teaching, and traveling. Another featured work of Indigenous historical fiction centers on Nokee, the final guardian of a mound-building culture in 17th-century Michigan, who fights to preserve his people’s story amid conflict, disease, and colonial expansion. The arrival of French Jesuit missionaries offers new tools and a way to record an oral tradition before it fades, setting off a high-stakes search for an elder whose knowledge holds the whole truth. Suspenseful and rich with spiritual history, it blends ancestral memory and cultural survival. Stephen Rheaume, a Michigan native and a thirteenth-generation descendant of Louis Hebert, Canada’s earliest European apothecary and farmer, brings decades of work as a federal biologist and geo-hydrologist and is the author of 15 government reports on Great Lakes hydrology and ecology. Expect a welcoming celebration of Michigan voices with relaxed, drop-in book signings and conversations.

Jake Shulman-Ment and Raffi Boden

Violinist Jake Shulman-Ment and cellist Raffi Boden share the stage for an intimate klezmer string duo performance during a special Michigan tour. Their program highlights their recent collaboration with Abigale Reisman, Two Strings, showcasing dazzling technique, deep roots in Yiddish and Eastern European traditions, and fearless improvisation. The repertoire blends original works, new musical settings of early 20th century radical leftist Yiddish poetry, and pieces newly recovered from long-lost manuscripts. The music moves from hushed and haunting to exuberant and celebratory, connecting past and present with ease. Jake is a leading klezmer violinist and composer who performs internationally as a soloist and with ensembles including Midwood, Daniel Kahn, and Abigale Reisman. Recognized for bold improvisations and a rich, resonant sound, he shifts naturally between soulful laments and dance-driven tunes. His credits include the documentary Soul Exodus and on-screen performances in Succession and The Irishman. He researched and documented traditional music in Romania as a Fulbright scholar and studied regional violin styles in Hungary and Greece. He received the NYSCA/NYFA Fellowship in Folk and Traditional Arts in 2018. Raffi brings an expansive cello voice that honors folk lineages while embracing experimentation and spontaneity. A Juilliard graduate based in New York, he performs across settings from cozy rooms to Carnegie Hall, with projects spanning experimental chamber groups to high-energy klezmer bands. His current ensembles include the Magid Ensemble, Levyosn, The Golden Thread Ensemble, Tsvey Strunes with Jake and Abigale, the Riwaya Ensemble, and Simone Baron & Arco Belo, with new recordings planned for 2025 and 2026. Admission is $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Beer or wine from Sleepwalker may be brought to the show, and outside non-alcoholic beverages are permitted.

Medicine Drum Making Ceremony & Workshop

Craft a personal medicine drum in a four-hour, hands-on ceremony that weaves together mindful making and the transformative power of rhythm. Shamanic drumming uses steady, repetitive beats that can settle a busy mind and support a meditative, journeying state. Throughout the day, you will bring a new drum to life with step-by-step guidance for lacing, shaping the handle, and creating a beater, all within a respectful space that honors the gifts of animal and tree. Materials are provided, including an 18 inch natural steam-bent willow frame, ethically sourced buffalo hide and lacing, and a drum beater. After the build, a guided journey led by Mary Ablao helps deepen your bond with the drum. This experience welcomes those seeking a meaningful connection with nature and music, anyone drawn to spiritual growth and transformation, and individuals curious about shamanic practices and energy healing. The facilitators bring extensive care and expertise. Mary Ablao is an artist, registered art therapist, certified Reiki master, and sound healing and shamanic practitioner. Alexis Schneider is a licensed professional counselor, certified clinical trauma professional, acupuncture detoxification specialist, and energy healing practitioner, as well as the owner and founding director of LiveWell. Please bring a large towel to wrap your finished drum. If you wish, you may place a small, flat crystal about the size of a dime in the handle and bring any simple embellishments. A potluck-style meal is part of the gathering, with soup and drinks provided, and participants are invited to bring a light snack or side to share. There will be a break for lunch. The exchange for this workshop is $250 for members and $275 for guests or non-members. A nonrefundable $100 deposit reserves a place at the time of registration. The remaining balance is paid on site by cash, Venmo, or check, with totals of $150 for members and $175 for guests. Registration must be finalized at least 72 hours in advance so materials can be prepared, and a minimum of four participants is required. If the minimum is not met, the workshop will be canceled and a refund will be offered or a spot can be moved to the next session.
