Artist Trading Card (ATC) MAKING Workshop

This is a swap session rather than a making workshop. Artist trading cards are miniature works of art collected and traded worldwide, often at organized swaps in person or online. The only official rule is size, measuring 2.5 inches by 3.5 inches. A separate cardmaking event is available through registration.

Artist Trading Card Workshop
This hands-on session focuses on making artist trading cards and is planned to give participants already registered for the trading event time to create a few more pieces. No prior experience is needed, and all materials are provided. The fee is $15. Artist trading cards are small works, 2.5 by 3.5 inches, collected and exchanged in organized swaps in person and online. Nearly any medium or technique is welcome as long as the finished card fits a standard trading card sleeve. They are intended for trading rather than selling, though some artists issue them as Art Card Editions and Originals. Ideas to try include collage, origami, watercolor, drawing, doodling, and other mixed media approaches. A free trading event will follow the workshop.

Dinosauria
Dinosauria, presented by Michigan First Credit Union, returns this season with a completely refreshed adventure spread across three acres. Follow a redesigned trail and come face to face with new prehistoric giants, including an Omeisaurus stretching 50 feet long and 25 feet high, the horned Carnotaurus, and the airborne Tupandactylus. Interactive features add to the fun, with two 16 foot climbable dinosaurs, a Parasaurolophus near the entrance and a Triceratops along the route. Step inside a walk-in fiberglass dinosaur egg for a memorable photo, and let young explorers assemble foam bone kits to build their own dino skeletons. Beloved elements make a return too. The one way path extends about 0.15 miles through lush surroundings and showcases more than 25 lifelike animatronic dinosaurs. Kids can unearth hidden bones at multiple dig pits, then browse the Dino Tent for prehistoric themed gifts, games, apparel, and souvenirs. A green screen photo setup offers another way to picture yourself in ancient landscapes. Tickets are $6 per guest and can be purchased at the main admissions gate or the Dinosauria ticket window, with free entry for ages 2 and under. Bundles are available that combine Dinosauria with a train ride, a carousel spin, and a 4D Theater ticket. Zoo members can add a Dino Pass for $50 per membership to enjoy unlimited access to the trail all summer. The trail is located inside the Detroit Zoo next to the Coney Corner restaurant and follows a gravel surface with a slight grade and some changes in terrain. This experience invites all ages to discover the wonder of dinosaurs while underscoring the rich diversity of life on Earth and the importance of protecting today’s species.

Poolside Performances offers an evening of exploration in experimental sound, movement, and mark making, highlighted by a summer set from the Allen Dennard Trio. Detroit-born trumpeter, composer, recording artist, bandleader, and activist Allen Dennard began playing in the John Trix Elementary school band at age 9 and later earned a Bachelor’s degree in Jazz Studies from the University of Michigan. As a bandleader he has released three projects to date: Stepping In in 2018, Flashback in 2022, and Black Valley in 2025. His work has received nominations from the Detroit Music Awards, and he has released music with the Motor City Wine label. Dennard has performed five times as a sideman at the Detroit Jazz Festival, appearing with Wendell Harrison in 2015, Ali Bey in 2017, the Detroit Jazz Festival All-Star Alumni Band in 2019, David McMurray in 2020, and the Keyon Harold Big Band in 2021. He headlined the festival in 2022 and 2025 with The Allen Dennard Quintet and the Allen Dennard Quartet, and his groups have headlined venues in Detroit and across the Midwest, including Baker’s Keyboard Lounge, Cliff Bell’s, and The Dirty Dog Jazz Cafe. In 2025, the Allen Dennard Trio represented Detroit on a tour of Japan with the Detroit Jazz Festival Generations All-Star Group. His music blends jazz with contemporary influences, house, hip hop, and funk, reflecting deep roots in Detroit alongside a growing presence locally, nationally, and internationally. This event takes place rain or shine. It is free and open to the public with RSVP, and a cash bar will be available throughout the evening.

Muscle & More @ the Museum returns as a community celebration of cars that supports the Royal Oak Historical Museum. What began as a small meet-up of enthusiasts at the museum's former firehouse to raise a few dollars has grown into the museum's biggest fundraiser. With support from the automotive aftermarket community, a past edition brought out more than 125 vehicles along with activities for kids, freshly made doughnuts, a cookout, treats from Bombshell Treat Bar, a visit from the Rovers scooter club, emergency vehicles on site, awards, door and cash prizes, and a procession of cars that inspired strong community participation. Plans are underway for another lively gathering with even more to enjoy.

Adrenaline Camp is a week-long program for thrill-seeking kids ages 7 to 15 who are at least 48 inches tall. The experience blends high-energy activities with a strong focus on safety, led by counselors who coach skills, build confidence, and help campers form new friendships in a welcoming, largely screen-free setting. Throughout the week, participants can take part in driver education and coaching for go-karts, get track time, explore virtual reality, try racing simulators, ride drift trikes, and enter a design-your-own-kart contest. The contest is not offered during Spring Break sessions, and specific activities may vary by location. Sessions run Monday through Friday and require advance registration. The program connects with Monumental Color: Cecily Brown, Sam Gilliam, and Joan Mitchell, an exhibition featuring major works by three influential abstract artists. Through the Monumental Connection series, participating artists and performers explore affinities with Sam Gilliam’s ties to jazz, Joan Mitchell’s enduring bond with poetry, and the energetic spirit found in Cecily Brown’s paintings. Joan Mitchell, a leading Abstract Expressionist associated with the New York School, was acclaimed for vibrant color that evokes the natural world. Eléna Rivera, born in Mexico City, raised in Paris, and based in New York City, has published poems responding to Mitchell’s work in Three Fold, is the author of several poetry collections, and received a National Endowment for the Arts Literature Fellowship in Translation. Chris Tysh is a poet and playwright with twelve books, recipient of fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and The Kresge Foundation, and the Murray Jackson Creative Scholar in the Arts Award from Wayne State University, where she teaches writing. She serves as poetry editor of Three Fold and lives in Detroit. There is no additional charge beyond museum admission.

Seating is first come, first served, and due to limited space and the possibility of other workshops taking place, anyone seated in the workshop area who is not participating in a project may be subject to a seating fee. An intimate solo saxophone set by emerging bandleader Houston Patton unfolds in the Larson Gallery as part of the Monumental Connection performance series. The program places live improvisation in dialogue with the exhibition Monumental Color, an assembly of significant works by Cecily Brown, Sam Gilliam, and Joan Mitchell. The series draws connections between the performers and the artists on view, echoing Gilliam’s affinity for jazz, Mitchell’s lifelong bond with poetry, and the vigorous physicality found in Brown’s paintings. Gilliam, a pioneering figure in postwar American painting, once remarked, “before painting, there was Jazz,” praising the freedom and the improvisational “acrobatics” that animate the music. Detroit-born saxophonist Houston Patton began playing at a young age inspired by his father and later earned a BFA in Jazz and Contemporary Improvisation from the University of Michigan. In February 2025 he became the youngest bandleader to host a residency at Cliff Bell’s in Detroit. This event is free with museum admission.
