Sustainable Home Living: Simple Swaps for a More Intentional Life

Explore simple, budget friendly ways to live more sustainably at this workshop at Refill Emporium. Learn how small choices at home can cut waste and conserve resources, from swapping in reusable options and using refill systems to everyday energy and water savers, along with the benefits of sharing within your community. The focus stays on realistic changes that can lower costs, lighten environmental impact, and strengthen your connection to your home, your routines, your neighbors, and the natural world. The session is led by Kelsey Starnes, whose personal journey through illness to remission informs a compassionate, practical teaching style. Kelsey holds a civil engineering degree and a graduate degree in sustainability, analytics, and management from the Illinois Institute of Technology, created a campus composting program, and has taught in both athletic and academic settings. She collaborates with Moonlit Moth Treasures, founded by Jillian Sturgill, a community focused venture that curates vintage finds, rescues unique pieces from the landfill, and hosts creative, hands on workshops that bring people together. Attendees receive 10 percent off Refill Emporium purchases on the day of the class. Bring clean, empty containers if you would like to refill them.

Casual Euchre

Enjoy a friendly night of cards at Johnny Blacks Public House. This casual euchre gathering welcomes all experience levels and does not charge an entry fee. Order dinner while you play to support the host and collect a 10 point bonus. Arrive and head out on your own schedule. Many stop in early for a relaxed meal, others drop by later, and you can leave whenever it suits you. A typical night includes about six to eight short games, and there is no expectation to attend every week or stay the whole evening. Create an account with Darby Connections, update your RSVP, and invite friends. Registering helps with seating and scoring. Logged-in players can view results, and seat assignments and score updates are shared by text. Play follows the Darby Connections house rules. Partners rotate after each game, every player deals twice, and the screw the dealer rule is in effect. Keep the pace brisk, avoid talking about the current hand, enjoy the social atmosphere, and be considerate so everyone has a good time. Scoring is simple and competitive. Games can go beyond 10 points. Euchres and reneges on loners are worth four points. Your weekly total is the sum of your best five games, and monthly standings are based on your best ten games. Nightly top scorers earn a prize, ties are broken by the highest hand, winners must be present, and a grand prize recognizes the monthly champion. New to euchre? Short how-to videos are available, and the Trickster Cards app is recommended for practice and for times when there is an uneven number of players.

Monumental Connection: Three Fold

A poetry reading within Monumental Connection unfolds in collaboration with Three Fold, a local nonprofit arts journal, bringing together Eléna Rivera and Chris Tysh for readings in conversation with the artwork and its surroundings. The program connects with Monumental Color: Cecily Brown, Sam Gilliam, and Joan Mitchell, an exhibition featuring major works by three influential abstract artists. Through the Monumental Connection series, participating artists and performers explore affinities with Sam Gilliam’s ties to jazz, Joan Mitchell’s enduring bond with poetry, and the energetic spirit found in Cecily Brown’s paintings. Joan Mitchell, a leading Abstract Expressionist associated with the New York School, was acclaimed for vibrant color that evokes the natural world. Eléna Rivera, born in Mexico City, raised in Paris, and based in New York City, has published poems responding to Mitchell’s work in Three Fold, is the author of several poetry collections, and received a National Endowment for the Arts Literature Fellowship in Translation. Chris Tysh is a poet and playwright with twelve books, recipient of fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and The Kresge Foundation, and the Murray Jackson Creative Scholar in the Arts Award from Wayne State University, where she teaches writing. She serves as poetry editor of Three Fold and lives in Detroit. There is no additional charge beyond museum admission.

Enjoy a relaxed night of cards at Johnny Blacks Public House with a casual euchre format that welcomes both seasoned players and newcomers. Arrive when it suits you and leave when you are ready. Many attendees like to settle in early for a quiet meal, while others drop in later. Ordering dinner during play adds a 10 point bonus to your score. There is no entry fee. To help with seating and scoring, register in advance by creating an account through Darby Connections via text or a phone call to 248-975-7512, then adjust your RSVP and invite friends. There is no need to commit every week or stay all night, and most evenings include six to eight games. Darby Connections house rules apply. Partners change after each game, each player deals twice, and Screw the Dealer is in effect. Table talk about the current hand is not allowed, though conversation about everything else is encouraged. Keep games moving, be courteous, and have fun. Scoring allows totals above 10 points, and euchres and reneges on loners are worth four points. Your weekly total is the sum of your top five games, and monthly standings use your top ten games. Daily top scorers win a prize, with ties decided by the highest hand, and winners must be present. Registered, logged-in players can view scores on the event page, and seat assignments and score updates are sent by text.

MillerKnoll Archives Tour

Go behind the scenes at the MillerKnoll Archives, a recently opened public space on the company’s Design Yard campus that brings together the historic collections of Herman Miller, Knoll, and other brands in the family. Discover how designers such as Florence Knoll, George Nelson, Eero Saarinen, Charles and Ray Eames, Harry Bertoia, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and Marcel Breuer drew on ideas from the Bauhaus, Cranbrook Academy of Art, and the Museum of Modern Art to merge craft and industry, reshaping interiors and changing the way furniture is made. Guided by Bridget Bartal, MillerKnoll Special Projects Curator at Cranbrook Art Museum, the tour follows this design legacy and its influence on daily life. Also on view is Objetos de Hojalata para el Hogar, an exhibition that links MillerKnoll with Cranbrook’s Industrial Design program and features 19 works acquired by MillerKnoll, created by Leon Ransmeier, Fabien Capello, and Cranbrook Industrial Design students, highlighting the school’s focus on craft, place, and contemporary practice. Led by Daniel Carpenter, this session is the eighth in a yearlong series of twelve Full Moon Yoga Nidra practices held on or near the full moon. Participants rest on a mat or blanket, covered with a blanket and supported by a small pillow, while receiving guided instruction that gently settles the mind and body into a deeply restful, dreamless state between waking and sleep. In this level of ease, the pineal gland may become more active, releasing hormones associated with the body’s natural healing response and a felt sense of connectedness. Many find the experience as restorative as several hours of sleep. A core element of the practice is sankalpa, a clear and heartfelt intention. Each gathering is designed to renew and strengthen that intention and to deepen the ability to access the most restorative layers of relaxation. Regular practice can help refine the benefits over time. Hosted at Bodhi Seed Yoga. Cost is $20.

Monumental Connection: Houston Patton

An intimate solo saxophone set by emerging bandleader Houston Patton unfolds in the Larson Gallery as part of the Monumental Connection performance series. The program places live improvisation in dialogue with the exhibition Monumental Color, an assembly of significant works by Cecily Brown, Sam Gilliam, and Joan Mitchell. The series draws connections between the performers and the artists on view, echoing Gilliam’s affinity for jazz, Mitchell’s lifelong bond with poetry, and the vigorous physicality found in Brown’s paintings. Gilliam, a pioneering figure in postwar American painting, once remarked, “before painting, there was Jazz,” praising the freedom and the improvisational “acrobatics” that animate the music. Detroit-born saxophonist Houston Patton began playing at a young age inspired by his father and later earned a BFA in Jazz and Contemporary Improvisation from the University of Michigan. In February 2025 he became the youngest bandleader to host a residency at Cliff Bell’s in Detroit. This event is free with museum admission.
