Intermediate Mushroom Hunting with Guest Expert Noah Siegel

Designed for those who already know the basics of mushrooming, this intermediate field class focuses on sharpening identification skills and improving observation in the woods. Guest expert Noah Siegel, a leading figure in U.S. field mycology with over thirty years of work in identification, taxonomy, and photography, will begin with a presentation that builds practical techniques for recognizing fungi. Noah is a field guide author, an award winning photographer, and a widely requested speaker who has devoted his career to expanding public understanding of the fungal world. His recent three month study of primate mycophagy in Tanzania adds fresh perspective to the session. After the talk, the group heads outdoors for a guided mushroom hunt within an hour of Minneapolis. Guides from Chick of the Woods and Noah will assist with identification throughout the foray, with Noah offering extra support on advanced or challenging specimens. The day concludes with a group review of the collections and deeper discussion of key features and identification tips. Participants may also bring unknown mushrooms or photos for help with identification. Attendees may keep what they collect, though the emphasis is on learning about a wide diversity of fungi, including non edible species, rather than harvesting for the table. The fee is $89.

Conquer a Classic: August

Find encouragement to take on classic books that can be tough to start alone. This discussion group meets every other month to provide plenty of time to read and reflect on each selection. In August, the focus is Valley of the Dolls by Jacqueline Susann. Set in a time when many women were expected to be housewives, the novel follows Anne, Neely, and Jennifer as they become close friends while striving to make their mark in New York City. Their ascent through the entertainment world brings both success and strain, and the story explores how reaching the top can lead to a difficult descent into the Valley of the Dolls.

Birdies Fore Brave Babies brings golfers and supporters together for a day centered on community, connection, purpose, and fun, all in support of NICU families through The Brave Foundation. Hosted in partnership with Majestic Oaks Golf Club, the event pairs a lively tournament atmosphere with a mission-driven focus. The Brave Foundation was created out of a family’s time in the NICU. Their son Brave was born four months early at one pound and spent nearly a year receiving life-saving care. Shortly after he came home, their daughter was also born prematurely and faced another lengthy NICU stay. Across 517 days between both children, they experienced fear and uncertainty, as well as the power of support and community. Today, the foundation delivers Brave Boxes and resources that offer practical help and encouragement to NICU families.
