Bird Language 101

A day devoted to understanding bird communication with guest presenter Robert Daun. Open to seasoned birders and complete beginners, this course explores how songs, companion calls, territorial signals, juvenile begging, and alarms can point to food, water, shelter, predators, and other changes on the landscape. Taught as an age-old human skill that once supported survival, these practices still enrich time outdoors by revealing predator movement and subtle ecological shifts. Instruction focuses on recognizing patterns in sound and behavior, building ecological insight, moving through the woods with greater calm and awareness, and reducing disturbance to wildlife. The aim is a deeper connection to place and a renewed sense of belonging in nature. The program uses a pay what you can approach to keep access open, with contributions helping to sustain future outdoor learning.

The New Havoline Supremes

Mississippi Music at the Bemidji Waterfront presents a free community concert featuring The New Havoline Supremes, sponsored by Ottertail Power Company. St. Paul’s newest country band delivers an original sound shaped by the dueling lead guitars of Dan Lowinger and writer and vocalist Mary Cutrufello. The performance blends classic country from the 60s and 70s with guitar driven jam outs and the band’s signature stories woven into the music, played with the confidence that comes from decades on stage. A Broom Maker's Weekend - August

A first ever weekend workshop with Shannon and Jesse invites participants to craft beautiful, practical brooms entirely by hand and foot in a relaxed home studio setting. Learn the heritage techniques behind classic forms, including cobweb and kitchen brooms as well as whisk styles like Turkey Wing, Hawk’s Tail, and Hen’s Wing made with soft Tampico fiber. Working with broomcorn and nylon cord, participants practice binding, wrapping, and shaping, then customize each piece with preferred string colors and a choice of rustic or smooth handles. Everyone leaves with five finished brooms and the know-how to continue making at home, with the option to add a sixth project for an additional fee. All tools, aprons, and towels are provided. A charcuterie-style lunch and beverages are offered each day, and some sessions may move to the patio if the weather allows. Attendees may bring their own handles, sized 24 to 30 inches for the cobweb broom and 48 inches for the kitchen broom. Ages 14 and up are welcome, all experience levels can participate, and class size is limited to eight. This is a two-day progression that builds skills, so single-day registration is not available. Lodging is not included.

HomeChoice Cohort - September

HomeChoice offers a supportive pathway to homeownership that emphasizes stability, long-term wealth, and a home that benefits both family and community. It is designed for people preparing to build, buy, or remodel a home on the reservation or within 25 miles of the reservation boundary, whether just beginning the process or ready to take concrete steps. Through a seven step approach, the cohort covers how credit works and ways to strengthen a score, how to craft a sustainable homeownership budget, how to compare lending options with confidence, how to get ready for construction or purchase, and how to make sound financial choices. Leech Lake Financial Services provides whole-person and whole-family support so participants move forward together. This is a four-part series, with two sessions focused on Financial Wellness and two on HomeChoice, and each session builds on the previous one. Attendance at all four sessions is required. Participants must complete the HomeChoice Assessment before registering. Sessions take place at the LLFS Office.
