Telling one grass from another can be challenging at first glance, yet there are reliable clues that make identification easier. This in-person workshop, led by Extension Educator Erin Garrett, introduces core techniques for recognizing common grasses found in Illinois. It takes place at the Barkhausen Cache River Wetlands Center and features both indoor and outdoor learning. Registration is recommended but not required. Birding takes center stage at the Cache with a film night and a kickoff for a friendly migration challenge. The program covers birdwatching basics, fall migration, identification skills, and citizen science at the Cache River. A screening of The Big Year, a comedy adventure featuring Steve Martin, Jack Black, and Owen Wilson, spotlights the playful and sometimes competitive spirit of birding. The film is rated PG. After the movie, the Fall Migration Mini-Sit will be introduced, a team event where participants spread out to hotspots across the Cache River Watershed and use a three hour window to locate and tally as many bird species as possible. It is an opportunity to connect with other bird enthusiasts and learn more about the remarkable birds of the Cache. Complimentary popcorn and prizes are provided by the Southern Illinois Audubon Society. Beginners and experienced birders are welcome. Presented in partnership with IDNR, University of Illinois Extension, and the Southern Illinois Audubon Society. The event takes place at the Barkhausen Cache River Wetlands Center.

Tunes at Twilight brings a summer concert to the Ivers Square Gazebo on the new City Hall grounds with a live set by Swamp Tigers. Attendees are welcome to bring picnic baskets and lawn chairs for a relaxed evening of music on the lawn. The series is made possible by sponsors and volunteers, with Ivas John coordinating musicians each season and Jerry Lomax providing sound support each week. Concerts are held rain or shine, and if weather prevents an outdoor show, the performance moves indoors to Gospel Life Church in Downtown Cape, where coolers, food, and beverages are allowed.

Lorcana League takes place each week, giving participants a chance to play and win prizes. The entry fee is $2. Prizing includes both current and previous items.

Celebrate hope at the fifth annual Illuminating Hope Glow Walk. This community glow walk centers on a message of light and encouragement. Additional event information will be shared soon.

Master Naturalist Lily Glaeser and Indigo Nathani lead a relaxed bird-focused outing that helps participants practice identifying birds found in local habitats. People of all ages and skill levels are welcome. This session will be a birding sit, so a lawn chair is recommended. Advance registration is required so weather-related updates can be communicated. Binoculars are available to borrow with a reservation. Presented by University of Illinois Extension with support from Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge, Giant City State Park, Green Earth, Southern Illinois Audubon Society, the Shawnee Chapter of the Illinois Audubon Society, and Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Zoology Department.
