Telling one grass from another can be challenging at first glance, yet there are reliable clues that make identification easier. This in-person workshop, led by Extension Educator Erin Garrett, introduces core techniques for recognizing common grasses found in Illinois. It takes place at the Barkhausen Cache River Wetlands Center and features both indoor and outdoor learning. Registration is recommended but not required. The Safe House of Southeast Missouri hosts its annual luncheon, dedicated to celebrating the outstanding contributions of its partners, donors, volunteers, and staff. The event centers on recognition and appreciation for their service. Tickets are available for purchase.

A relaxed, monthly community roundtable at the Henry N. Barkhausen Cache River Wetlands Center brings neighbors, outdoor enthusiasts, and local partners together to share what is happening on the Cache, from community projects to trail updates. The gathering blends casual conversation, idea swapping, and friendly show-and-tell, with free coffee and time to connect with each other and the Wetlands Center. Attendees often trade ideas for programs and community events, compare recent nature observations such as bird activity, wildlife sightings, and seasonal changes, and discuss trail conditions along with favorite hiking, biking, or paddling routes. Participants are also welcome to bring nature photos or nature-inspired artwork for possible display at the Center. It is an informal, welcoming space to meet fellow outdoor-minded folks and get to know the Wetlands Center’s Natural Resources Coordinator, Sydney Waters. Free to attend, with no RSVP required.

Birding takes center stage at the Cache with a film night and a kickoff for a friendly migration challenge. The program covers birdwatching basics, fall migration, identification skills, and citizen science at the Cache River. A screening of The Big Year, a comedy adventure featuring Steve Martin, Jack Black, and Owen Wilson, spotlights the playful and sometimes competitive spirit of birding. The film is rated PG. After the movie, the Fall Migration Mini-Sit will be introduced, a team event where participants spread out to hotspots across the Cache River Watershed and use a three hour window to locate and tally as many bird species as possible. It is an opportunity to connect with other bird enthusiasts and learn more about the remarkable birds of the Cache. Complimentary popcorn and prizes are provided by the Southern Illinois Audubon Society. Beginners and experienced birders are welcome. Presented in partnership with IDNR, University of Illinois Extension, and the Southern Illinois Audubon Society. The event takes place at the Barkhausen Cache River Wetlands Center.

Tunes at Twilight brings a summer concert to the Ivers Square Gazebo on the new City Hall grounds with a live set by Swamp Tigers. Attendees are welcome to bring picnic baskets and lawn chairs for a relaxed evening of music on the lawn. The series is made possible by sponsors and volunteers, with Ivas John coordinating musicians each season and Jerry Lomax providing sound support each week. Concerts are held rain or shine, and if weather prevents an outdoor show, the performance moves indoors to Gospel Life Church in Downtown Cape, where coolers, food, and beverages are allowed.

This event features Gundam play with a $5 entry cost. Prize packs will be awarded, and additional prizes will be determined by attendance.

Master Naturalist Lily Glaeser and Indigo Nathani lead a relaxed bird-focused outing that helps participants practice identifying birds found in local habitats. People of all ages and skill levels are welcome. This session will be a birding sit, so a lawn chair is recommended. Advance registration is required so weather-related updates can be communicated. Binoculars are available to borrow with a reservation. Presented by University of Illinois Extension with support from Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge, Giant City State Park, Green Earth, Southern Illinois Audubon Society, the Shawnee Chapter of the Illinois Audubon Society, and Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Zoology Department.

Enjoy a peaceful country afternoon at Hemman Winery in Brazeau, Perry County, a historic spot with a charming building and a welcoming vibe. Ron Allen returns with live acoustic music, mixing familiar favorites with a few rediscovered classics, and he invites song requests throughout the performance. For more than two decades the winery has offered award-winning wines, food, and live music in an atmosphere that feels like spending time with friends. In addition to their wines, a variety of other beverages is available, including beer.

Energize your week with a 45 minute Zumba class led by Zumba Ellen at Mercy Fitness Center (HealthPoint Cape & Jackson). Designed for all ages and fitness levels, this session uses consistent dance routines for 6 to 8 weeks so participants can get familiar with the moves and make steady progress. No dance experience is needed, and you can move at the pace that feels right for you. The class is held in the large group exercise studio with the lights turned down low to keep the focus on the music. On-site childcare is available for a small fee, and the service desk can provide pricing details. A membership is required to attend, with additional perks available to members.

A welcoming Zumba workout brings together women from many fitness levels, faith backgrounds, dance experiences, and health goals to build health and real connection. No dance experience is required, and you can move at your own pace, take breaks when needed, and focus on putting both body and mind first. Newcomers are encouraged to relax and have fun, knowing that songs and steps repeat from week to week so they become easier to follow, much like learning any new sport. The class takes place in a spacious gym with room to spread out, whether you prefer to be up front or in a quieter spot. Bring water and a towel, and know that bathrooms are available. Pricing is $5 for a single visit or $30 for a 10-class pass, with payment accepted by cash, check, or PayPal/Venmo to @squareonewellness. Childcare is available for ages 0 to 12 in a room next to the gym for $2 per child, paid to Ellen Gipson and passed directly to the sitter. Teens ages 14 to 16 may participate with a parent’s permission and supervision for $3. The facility is provided by Discover Life Church, and participants are asked to be respectful of the space and its beliefs. Each workout ends with a moment of gratitude, a brief daily devotional, and a short Christian prayer.
