Karen E. Griffin leads a powerful solo performance that brings to life the little-told journey of Sarah Rector, once among the wealthiest Black girls in America. This immersive production blends history, emotion, storytelling, and live performance into an evening centered on wealth, culture, power, and a legacy rarely told. The experience invites attendees to eat, drink, and celebrate in Sarah Rector’s spirit, then witness her story told on stage. Presented at The Boone Theater, it is executive produced by Shawn Edwards and directed by Damron Armstrong, with a joint presentation by the Black Repertory Theatre of Kansas City and the Black Movie Hall of Fame.

Dale Watson and His Lone Stars

Dale Watson and His Lone Stars bring a hard-charging set of roots country that leans into swing, honky tonk, and rockabilly. An award-winning musician and producer, Watson has spent more than four decades making records and performing, with a catalog of over 30 albums and shared stages with Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, and Kris Kristofferson. Sweet Lizzy Project, a five-piece born in Cuba and now based in Nashville, delivers high-energy pop-rock with modern polish and classic rock roots. The group grew from Havana club standouts to opening for Heart and Joan Jett before a crowd of 20,000, and earned national attention through PBS’s Havana Time Machine, an NPR Weekend Edition profile, and a Miami Herald cover story. After relocating to the United States in late 2017 as borders were about to tighten again, the band toured from coast to coast and shared stages with Heart, Joan Jett, Johnny Swim, The Mavericks, Raul Malo, Jamey Johnson, Buckcherry, Billy Strings, and Silvana Estrada. Lead vocalist Diaz pairs vulnerable songwriting with a wide vocal range, joined by guitarist, producer, songwriter, and backing vocalist Miguel Comas, keyboardist and backing vocalist Wilfredo Gatell, and the rhythm section of drummer Angel Luis Millet and bassist Alejandro Gonzalez. 1960s Go Go Dance Class

Get into the groove of the 1960s with an upbeat go go dance workshop for all experience levels at Red Light Studio Kansas City. Expect an energetic class set to period favorites and a welcoming space to explore stylized movement from the era. Participants will get an introduction to what go go dance is, learn foundational footwork and arm patterns, pick up at least ten signature moves from the 60s, build group rhythm like a backing dance team, and practice steps you can use onstage or out on the dance floor in a playful, supportive environment. The session begins with a warmup inspired by jazz isolations, moves into essential jazz and social steps that underpin go go, then breaks down classics such as the pony, the twist, and the mashed potato with creative arm and hand variations. It wraps with a freestyle segment to apply new skills, followed by time for questions, history of go go and burlesque, extra practice, and brainstorming for act development. Wear clothing you can move and sweat in, such as shorts, athletic wear, or a swimsuit layer, and bring go go boots, sneakers, or any comfortable dance shoe. Tuition is $20, with enrollment handled directly with the instructor via Venmo, PayPal, or CashApp. The class is taught by Jenny Pierce, a Lawrence and Kansas City based burlesque dancer and choreographer whose passion for go go deepened while living in Tokyo. After meeting and photographing a club dancer in Shibuya, she began choreographing and performing vintage-style backup numbers in Japan. Her training includes study with Angie Pontani at the New York School of Burlesque, and her performance credits feature go go appearances at Coney Island and the New York Burlesque Festival. In 2017 she founded the Brooklyn group Babes Rage. Her style blends free-spirited showgirl flair with classic 1960s vocabulary, and many of her burlesque pieces draw on the looks and sounds of the 60s and 70s.

Afterward, certified medium Peggy Ewing guides an interactive exploration inside the home, where accounts of lingering spirits and unexplained moments have brought the site recognition nationwide as a haunted destination. Teacher Comedy Night! - Kansas City, MO - The Unteachables Live w/ Miss Redacted

The Unteachables are a crew of stand-up comics who also found themselves in front of a whiteboard, and their sets wander far beyond classroom chaos to connect with educators, non-educators, and anyone who loves to laugh. As a group they have been featured on NBC, The Breakfast Club, The New York Post, and the Roast Battle League. Their Paid Time Off Tour is a cheeky celebration of all things education, fresh off a Summer Break Special, and it spotlights a former teacher of the year alongside a comic who was fired over TikToks. Expect uncensored standup followed by a no holds barred Q&A. Miss Redacted is a teacher and fast-rising comic who jokingly calls herself a soon-to-be trophy wife. After years in the classroom, she turned to stand-up to process what neither therapy nor a salary schedule could fix. She leans into her Southern roots, references a girl-boss mom, and talks about loving Waffle House and camo mini skirts. She co-hosts the Teacher Quit Talk podcast, has racked up millions of TikTok views, and keeps lesson objectives out of her set. Stephen Taylor hails from Louisiana and moved to Kansas City to put some distance between himself and traditional Southern roots. His comedy blends sharp perspective, story-driven bits, and a touch of Southern charm. He headlines and features at clubs, bars, and colleges across the country, and even brings the mic to his own classroom. Credits include The Breakfast Club, The New York Post, and San Francisco Sketchfest. His debut album, The Bottom Half, hit number one on iTunes and can be heard on SiriusXM. Lou Pharis grew up away from the spotlight in Louisiana and once chased dreams of playing football at an elite level, followed by a shot at American Ninja Warrior. When those paths closed, he stepped into public education, and a rough day at school pushed him to try an open mic at a time when a teacher shortage made risk feel possible. His stand-up has since drawn over 100 million views on social media. He has headlined stages like Zanies, Comedy Works, and Wiseguys, appeared on NBC and Bored Teachers, and performed at dozens of comedy festivals nationwide.

Nick Shoulders

Nick Shoulders brings airy vocals and expert whistling shaped by a lifetime in the Ozark hills. Drawing on a family heritage of regional traditional singing and years spent performing for crowds on street corners, he crafts a rowdy yet sharp‑witted strain of country. His music bridges deep roots with a playful streak, blending backwoods influences with songs that speak to the complexities of the modern South. Dreamlike artwork and purposefully old‑time writing reveal an artist grounded in the layered history of rural Arkansas. The result is a sound that nods to tradition while openly challenging country music’s habit of deferring to old centers of power and repression. Expect gentle charm, sly humor, and a yodel that bites, all in service of putting renewed effort and heart into country music.

KC Baroque - Stabat Mater (Summer Series Concert II)

A summer series program from KC Baroque highlights Pergolesi's Stabat Mater with featured soloists Hannah De Priest, soprano, and Jay Carter, countertenor. The music begins with Alessandro Scarlatti's Sonate a quatro senza clavicembalo, a purely instrumental work that sets a graceful tone for what follows. Pergolesi's reflection on grief and devotion has resonated with audiences for almost three centuries, and this thoughtfully shaped concert leads to that centerpiece with clarity and depth. The performance takes place at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church of Kansas City, MO.
