Training barrels come next, followed by the beginner class, with open barrels immediately after and senior and youth barrel classes to wrap up. Fees include a $5 processing fee, training barrels $4, beginners $5, open barrels $30, senior barrels $25, youth barrels $25, and an adult sidepot at $20 that rolls over and does not count toward points. Poles entries are training poles $4, open 3D poles $25, and youth poles $20.

Nature Day 2026

Nature Day at CCNC celebrates discovery, creativity, and time outdoors for all ages. Scientists and educators will lead hands-on activity booths that invite curiosity as participants explore the natural world, with opportunities to meet working scientists and take part in interactive experiments. The Splashing Frog will be on for splashing and play, and a scavenger hunt adds to the adventure. Those seeking a challenge can try a nature-themed escape challenge held outside for an additional fee, and makers can create nature-inspired prints on merchandise using carved printmaking blocks, also available for a fee. Live music sets a cheerful tone throughout the event. Adults can attend talks featuring Garden Mama on native plants and Tom and Debora Mann on salamanders and their rescue efforts on the Natchez Trace Parkway. Local food trucks and vendors will be available for purchase. Admission is donation-based in any amount, supporting programs and experiences that connect the community with nature. With activities for every age and interest, the day offers plenty to learn, create, and discover, plus a few surprises.

Put your strengths to the test at MCM’s SUPER-lympics, presented in part with support from Mississippi Baptist Medical Center. In a themed village setting, participants move through interactive learning games that highlight both physical and mental well-being. The experience opens with a ceremony, then continues with SUPER-lympic challenges focused on three areas: staying active, making healthy food choices, and nurturing social and emotional health. Younger children practice fine and gross motor skills, spatial awareness, and agility, while older children work on flexibility, aerobic fitness, and muscle strength. To encourage nutritious eating, children and caregivers take part in hands-on activities in the Enchanted Land of Story that explore healthy foods, how they grow in the garden, and how they taste. This program features clarinetist Jorge Diez, principal clarinetist of the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra since 2024 and originally from Medellin, Colombia. He previously performed as second clarinet with the Tuscaloosa Symphony and has appeared in the United States, Italy, Colombia, Venezuela, Spain, and Panama. His orchestral collaborations include the Alabama, Arkansas, Huntsville, and Columbus symphonies, as well as the Simon Bolivar Symphony and the Medellin Philharmonic, working with conductors Gustavo Dudamel, Rafael Payares, Myung-whum Chung, Andres Orozco-Estrada, and Krzysztof Penderecki. As a soloist he has performed with the Zulia Symphony Orchestra, the Rafael Urdaneta Symphony Orchestra, the Huxford Symphony, and the Mississippi Symphony. His chamber music experience includes appearances at the Bergamo International Music Festival, ClarinetFest, the New World Festival, the Magic City Clarinet Festival in Birmingham, and the Festival Musical de Antioquia. He is based in Jackson, Mississippi, contributes to the local music community, and is an artist for Selmer Paris and D’Addario Woodwinds.

It traces how ecology, personal experience, and history gather into the idea of home across the natural and human-made places we share. Organized in three parts, the collection moves from public landscapes toward more intimate spaces. The opening poems settle along beaches, docks, and rivers, where family stories rise alongside work, inheritance, and loss. At its center, a lyric field guide to North American trees turns botanical language into a way to understand how people are formed, with trees appearing as witnesses to use, extraction, care, and endurance. This sequence extends the approach of Ashley’s earlier chapbook on the same subject, widening its emotional and narrative scope. The final section turns inward to settlement and household life, where neighbors weigh boundaries, nights stretch thin with noise, and homes show the marks of wear, improvisation, and temporary shelter. Throughout, landscapes and domestic rooms act as forces rather than backdrops, shaping movement and memory. Readers and fellow writers have highlighted the work’s precision and attentiveness, noting its many voices, its grounded sense of witness, and a vivid language that lingers. As a debut, HABITATS gathers its places into a sustained reckoning, acknowledging the fragile conditions through which a life takes shape and affirming a shared insistence on living together. Ashley’s writing has appeared in venues that include Asimov’s Science Fiction, Analog SF&F, DIAGRAM, The Normal School, Sonora Review, Reed Magazine, and Sequestrum. He earned a PhD from the University of Southern Mississippi’s Center for Writers and teaches creative writing at Tuskegee University in Alabama. 2026 Heart of the Horse Trainers Challenge

Trainers partner with an untrained rescue horse for 120 days, then gather at the Kirk Fordice Equine Center to compete for the Heart of the Horse Trainers Challenge title and more than $15,000 in cash and prizes. Professional, amateur, and youth competitors from English, western, and gaited disciplines put their horsemanship to the test in a multi-day, head-to-head format. Horses that were once unwanted and neglected demonstrate new skills as rideable, capable companions prepared for long-term homes. The Heart of the Horse Expo features horse-focused vendors and exhibits and includes the event’s most popular class, the Freestyle competition. The lineup also includes Youth Pony Challenge classes with previously feral Shetland ponies trained by young trainers for new homes. After the competitive classes conclude, Diamond Horses are presented for adoption to approved adopters for a specified fee.

Jesmyn Ward at the Eudora Welty House

At the Eudora Welty House and Garden, Jesmyn Ward appears with Ebony Lumumba to highlight Ward’s new essay collection, On Witness and Respair. The book gathers her creative nonfiction from more than a decade, including widely circulated pieces, three previously unpublished speeches, and an introductory essay. Its title draws on respair, an old word for renewed hope after despair. Ward reflects on growing up in a multigenerational household in rural Mississippi and considers the craft and power of fiction. She traces the writers who shaped her reading life, from discovering Octavia Butler in her twenties to finding her childhood reflected in Richard Wright, along with a lifelong admiration for Toni Morrison. The collection also engages with raising a Black son in a time of increasing division and cruelty, and it faces personal loss in an essay about her partner’s sudden death on the eve of the COVID-19 epidemic. Guided by her grandmother Dorothy’s charge to speak plainly and completely, these pages are rooted in beauty, resilience, and hope. Ward holds an MFA from the University of Michigan and has been recognized with honors that include a MacArthur grant, a Stegner Fellowship, the John and Renee Grisham Writers Residency, the Strauss Living Prize, and the 2022 Library of Congress Prize for American Fiction. She has twice won the National Book Award for Fiction for Sing, Unburied, Sing and Salvage the Bones. Her other books include the novel Where the Line Bleeds and the memoir Men We Reaped, a National Book Critics Circle Award finalist that received the Chicago Tribune Heartland Prize and the Media for a Just Society Award. She teaches creative writing at Tulane University and lives in Mississippi.

Dr. Harris offers an autobiographical talk about reconciling a lifelong affection for honey bees with a deep commitment to native wildlife, especially birds and indigenous pollinators. He reflects on how honey bees, while vital to agriculture and the pollination of many wild plants, are not native to North America and can out-compete native pollinators. Their estimated $20 billion yearly economic value in the United States often overshadows ecological concerns. As both an avid beekeeper and a passionate birder, he long felt caught between communities and kept his interests separate. Over time he came to see that honey bees and native pollinators can coexist, each supporting wider ecosystems and even the survival of songbirds. The presentation traces this shift in perspective and highlights the intricate interdependence of species within food webs grounded in native pollinator communities.
