Set in 1933 in Oxford, Mississippi as Prohibition fades and the Great Depression deepens, the story follows three women whose lives intersect. Meg is an eleven-year-old considered too old to be adopted at the Lafayette County Orphan Asylum. Birdie is an outspoken unmarried woman seeking help from her socially ambitious sister for the family she left behind. Charlie carries a complicated past, short on luck yet driven by grit and determination. Ty Segall brings a shape-shifting rock vision to Duling Hall, drawing on years as a key voice in California’s late-2000s psych-infused garage scene. After leaving The Epsilons and debuting solo in 2008, he has issued dozens of releases across solo projects and collaborations, building a catalog known for range and momentum. His work spans the jagged charge of Emotional Mugger and the gentle touch of Sleeper, the tight, self-played force of Lemons and the broad, collaborative sweep of Freedom’s Goblin. Recent turns include synth-forward textures on Harmonizer, a classic-leaning film score approach with Whirlybird, and intimate, home-recorded songs on Hello, Hi. Through every shift, sturdy melodies, restless creativity, and an energized delivery remain the thread that connects it all.

RJ BilliardsGarrett Ashley signing event
Garrett Ashley visits Lemuria Bookstore for a signing celebrating HABITATS, his new collection of poems. The book travels through coasts and tidal rivers, fields and floodplains, pine country, hot Southern towns, and rural homesteads, considering how lives are shaped under ongoing pressure. It traces how ecology, personal experience, and history gather into the idea of home across the natural and human-made places we share. Organized in three parts, the collection moves from public landscapes toward more intimate spaces. The opening poems settle along beaches, docks, and rivers, where family stories rise alongside work, inheritance, and loss. At its center, a lyric field guide to North American trees turns botanical language into a way to understand how people are formed, with trees appearing as witnesses to use, extraction, care, and endurance. This sequence extends the approach of Ashley’s earlier chapbook on the same subject, widening its emotional and narrative scope. The final section turns inward to settlement and household life, where neighbors weigh boundaries, nights stretch thin with noise, and homes show the marks of wear, improvisation, and temporary shelter. Throughout, landscapes and domestic rooms act as forces rather than backdrops, shaping movement and memory. Readers and fellow writers have highlighted the work’s precision and attentiveness, noting its many voices, its grounded sense of witness, and a vivid language that lingers. As a debut, HABITATS gathers its places into a sustained reckoning, acknowledging the fragile conditions through which a life takes shape and affirming a shared insistence on living together. Ashley’s writing has appeared in venues that include Asimov’s Science Fiction, Analog SF&F, DIAGRAM, The Normal School, Sonora Review, Reed Magazine, and Sequestrum. He earned a PhD from the University of Southern Mississippi’s Center for Writers and teaches creative writing at Tuskegee University in Alabama. His books include Periphylla, and Other Deep Ocean Attractions from Press 53, A Field Guide to North American Trees from Good Printed Things, and HABITATS from Loblolly Press.

Hal & Mal's Big RoomJesmyn Ward at the Eudora Welty House
At the Eudora Welty House and Garden, Jesmyn Ward appears with Ebony Lumumba to highlight Ward’s new essay collection, On Witness and Respair. The book gathers her creative nonfiction from more than a decade, including widely circulated pieces, three previously unpublished speeches, and an introductory essay. Its title draws on respair, an old word for renewed hope after despair. Ward reflects on growing up in a multigenerational household in rural Mississippi and considers the craft and power of fiction. She traces the writers who shaped her reading life, from discovering Octavia Butler in her twenties to finding her childhood reflected in Richard Wright, along with a lifelong admiration for Toni Morrison. The collection also engages with raising a Black son in a time of increasing division and cruelty, and it faces personal loss in an essay about her partner’s sudden death on the eve of the COVID-19 epidemic. Guided by her grandmother Dorothy’s charge to speak plainly and completely, these pages are rooted in beauty, resilience, and hope. Ward holds an MFA from the University of Michigan and has been recognized with honors that include a MacArthur grant, a Stegner Fellowship, the John and Renee Grisham Writers Residency, the Strauss Living Prize, and the 2022 Library of Congress Prize for American Fiction. She has twice won the National Book Award for Fiction for Sing, Unburied, Sing and Salvage the Bones. Her other books include the novel Where the Line Bleeds and the memoir Men We Reaped, a National Book Critics Circle Award finalist that received the Chicago Tribune Heartland Prize and the Media for a Just Society Award. She teaches creative writing at Tulane University and lives in Mississippi.

Belhaven HeightsJuly Noon Lecture: All About the Birds and the Bees
Dr. Harris offers an autobiographical talk about reconciling a lifelong affection for honey bees with a deep commitment to native wildlife, especially birds and indigenous pollinators. He reflects on how honey bees, while vital to agriculture and the pollination of many wild plants, are not native to North America and can out-compete native pollinators. Their estimated $20 billion yearly economic value in the United States often overshadows ecological concerns. As both an avid beekeeper and a passionate birder, he long felt caught between communities and kept his interests separate. Over time he came to see that honey bees and native pollinators can coexist, each supporting wider ecosystems and even the survival of songbirds. The presentation traces this shift in perspective and highlights the intricate interdependence of species within food webs grounded in native pollinator communities.
