Dvořák to Debussy

At Galloway United Methodist Church, this chamber program brings together a rhythmically driven ensemble piece with works by Antonin Dvořák and Claude Debussy. Trevor Weston’s Dig It from 2019 features bass clarinet, percussion, electric guitar, and additional instruments in a dynamic interplay. The program also includes Dvořák’s Serenade for Wind Instruments with cello and bass, Op. 44, and Debussy’s String Quartet in G minor performed by the Mississippi Symphony String Quartet. It is part of the Chamber Concert Series presented by Keesler Federal Credit Union.

Spotter's Splash & Dash

Spotter’s Splash & Dash features a family-friendly run along Spotter’s Trail with a refreshing finish at the museum’s splash area. After the dash, each child participant receives a superhero mask and cape to wear during SUPER-lympics. On-site registration will be available. Activities continue at the water play area for finishers, followed by special event activities inside the museum. Pack a dry change of clothes so everyone can explore the museum comfortably after the splash.

Saturday Yoga in the Park

MWHSA Double Point Horse Show

Super-lympics

Put your strengths to the test at MCM’s SUPER-lympics, presented in part with support from Mississippi Baptist Medical Center. In a themed village setting, participants move through interactive learning games that highlight both physical and mental well-being. The experience opens with a ceremony, then continues with SUPER-lympic challenges focused on three areas: staying active, making healthy food choices, and nurturing social and emotional health. Younger children practice fine and gross motor skills, spatial awareness, and agility, while older children work on flexibility, aerobic fitness, and muscle strength. To encourage nutritious eating, children and caregivers take part in hands-on activities in the Enchanted Land of Story that explore healthy foods, how they grow in the garden, and how they taste. Emotional regulation and character building are woven into activities throughout the program. The celebration wraps up with a closing ceremony where participants receive a medal. The event strives to inspire simple, healthy habits through fun, educational activities, strengthen connections between families and local healthcare providers, and equip children and caregivers with knowledge and resources for a healthy lifestyle. Thrown, a Dallas-based rock quartet formed in January 2004, brings its many influences together for a distinct take on the genre at Hal & Mal's. The set highlights a sound shaped by the members’ varied backgrounds, offering a cohesive blend that reflects years of playing together.

Music in the City

This program features clarinetist Jorge Diez, principal clarinetist of the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra since 2024 and originally from Medellin, Colombia. He previously performed as second clarinet with the Tuscaloosa Symphony and has appeared in the United States, Italy, Colombia, Venezuela, Spain, and Panama. His orchestral collaborations include the Alabama, Arkansas, Huntsville, and Columbus symphonies, as well as the Simon Bolivar Symphony and the Medellin Philharmonic, working with conductors Gustavo Dudamel, Rafael Payares, Myung-whum Chung, Andres Orozco-Estrada, and Krzysztof Penderecki. As a soloist he has performed with the Zulia Symphony Orchestra, the Rafael Urdaneta Symphony Orchestra, the Huxford Symphony, and the Mississippi Symphony. His chamber music experience includes appearances at the Bergamo International Music Festival, ClarinetFest, the New World Festival, the Magic City Clarinet Festival in Birmingham, and the Festival Musical de Antioquia. He is based in Jackson, Mississippi, contributes to the local music community, and is an artist for Selmer Paris and D’Addario Woodwinds.

What started as a mother and son outing has grown into a mother and child experience that welcomes all children. Each ticket admits one adult and one child and includes a scoop of ice cream for mom and a scoop for the child from Flying Dolly’s. After check-in at the Brandon Main Street Association event office, enjoy ice cream, music, and sidewalk fun throughout downtown Brandon, then return to create a fresh flower bouquet for mom with help from a Brandon Main Street volunteer. The collection also engages with raising a Black son in a time of increasing division and cruelty, and it faces personal loss in an essay about her partner’s sudden death on the eve of the COVID-19 epidemic. Guided by her grandmother Dorothy’s charge to speak plainly and completely, these pages are rooted in beauty, resilience, and hope. Ward holds an MFA from the University of Michigan and has been recognized with honors that include a MacArthur grant, a Stegner Fellowship, the John and Renee Grisham Writers Residency, the Strauss Living Prize, and the 2022 Library of Congress Prize for American Fiction. She has twice won the National Book Award for Fiction for Sing, Unburied, Sing and Salvage the Bones. Her other books include the novel Where the Line Bleeds and the memoir Men We Reaped, a National Book Critics Circle Award finalist that received the Chicago Tribune Heartland Prize and the Media for a Just Society Award. She teaches creative writing at Tulane University and lives in Mississippi.

Enjoy a full day of NBHA and BBR 5D barrel racing alongside MSPBA poles, highlighted by $300 added to the Open 5D barrels. The action starts with training poles, continues with Open poles and then Youth poles, and moves into training barrels. Beginners run next, followed by Open, with Senior and Youth divisions to wrap up. Fees include a $5 processing fee, $4 for training barrels, $5 for Beginners, $30 for Open, $25 for Senior, and $25 for Youth. Poles entries are $4 for training poles, $25 for Open 3D poles, and $20 for Youth poles. An Adult sidepot is available for $20 with roll over and it is not a point class.

Step into a storybook setting at the Brandon High School Multipurpose Room, where a royal-themed celebration brings fairytale fun to life. Hosted by the Brandon Dance Booster Club, Inc. and the Brandon Dance Team, this event features three identical sessions, each capped at 50 tickets to keep the experience special for every guest. Activities include a live princess performance, lively sing and dance alongs, a coronation moment, and a bejeweled tiara to take home. Guests can enjoy a meet and greet with photo opportunities, receive a photo autograph souvenir, and savor sips and sweets amid elegant decor in a seated setting. Tickets are $75 and cover entry for one adult and one child, with additional guests welcome at $25 per person. Dr. Harris offers an autobiographical talk about reconciling a lifelong affection for honey bees with a deep commitment to native wildlife, especially birds and indigenous pollinators. He reflects on how honey bees, while vital to agriculture and the pollination of many wild plants, are not native to North America and can out-compete native pollinators. Their estimated $20 billion yearly economic value in the United States often overshadows ecological concerns. As both an avid beekeeper and a passionate birder, he long felt caught between communities and kept his interests separate. Over time he came to see that honey bees and native pollinators can coexist, each supporting wider ecosystems and even the survival of songbirds. The presentation traces this shift in perspective and highlights the intricate interdependence of species within food webs grounded in native pollinator communities.
