A weekly canicross group run meets at the Old Reedy Creek Road Trailhead and welcomes every fitness level. The route is typically an out and back, so experienced runners and those just getting started can run or hike alongside their four-legged companions at a comfortable pace. Depending on weather, the group uses either the multiuse trail into Umstead, a wide fine gravel road generally up to 4 miles, or the lake trail into Lake Crabtree County Park on singletrack, which is roughly 1.1 miles to the lake access and turnaround. Participants are asked to respect all dogs’ space, avoid on-leash nose to nose greetings, keep distance from the dog in front, and announce when passing. This is a reactive dog friendly group. Recommended gear includes a waist belt, bungee leash, and Y-front harness, with extra belts, bungee lines, and harnesses available to try and help provided for proper fitting. All speeds are welcome, including those who prefer to hike. On singletrack, no one is dropped. On the double track gravel out and back, someone may not always be right beside you, but the group ensures everyone returns to the parking lot. The run is canceled for thunderstorms and extreme heat, with the definition of extreme heat varying by time of year.

Joined by Matt Jones, Head of Digital Media at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences, he presents Return of the Wild and discusses how current findings compare with entries from the 1804 to 1806 journals. The program highlights collaboration with the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute and local experts nationwide. Expect striking video from camera traps and on-the-water observations by canoe and kayak, along with stories gathered while crossing wetlands, forests, and prairies. Attendees will also get a preview of videography being developed for a national documentary. Dr. Kays directs the Biodiversity Research Lab at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences and serves as a research scientist at NC State University, applying GPS tags and camera traps to study free-ranging animals through fieldwork and museum collections. He also shares research on the Wild Animals YouTube channel and hosts the NC Museum of Natural Sciences’ Wild Animals Podcast. Admission is free, with optional donations during registration supporting conservation work. Space is limited, so advance registration is recommended. The walk moves at a gentle pace for roughly 45 minutes, though some stretches are semi-rugged, so sturdy hiking shoes and long pants are recommended for comfort and safety. Friendly goats accompany the group along the way, trotting beside hikers, sampling leaves, and exploring the path. After the hike, spend about 30 minutes relaxing at the sanctuary. Meet more members of the herd up close, take photos, and browse the Wild Goat Trading Post featuring handmade items and goat-inspired gifts. The full experience lasts approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes and supports the care of rescue goats as well as the preservation of local farm heritage. NC Zoukfest returns for its fourth year, presented by Shannon and Jason with RDU ZOUK, bringing a full weekend of Zouk classes and socials to Elite Ballroom Dance Studio. All festival activities take place at the studio, with more artist and DJ announcements to come. The artist roster features Kuna and Tori, Camilla, and Gui and Nelly, with music by DJ Tiger and DJ soniKBliss. Special guests include Brandon and Zuzanna along with Lunna and Gabi. The week opens with optional add-ons on Thursday at a separate cost, including an afternoon series that blends Zouk with homesteading topics such as foraging, sourdough, kombucha, homemade vinegars, or planting a food forest, followed by a beginner class, an artist-led class, and a mini pre-party social that evening. The core festival runs from Friday through Sunday with daytime and evening classes, scheduled lunch and dinner breaks, and late-night socials.
