Family events in Beaufort, NC

Geared toward children ages 7 to 14 and their accompanying adults, this new, free 20 to 30 minute tour at the Bonehenge Whale Center is designed for younger visitors. It condenses the regular public tour and uses gentler images and language while offering hands-on moments with items like multiple bones, whale oil, and an actual whale tooth. Topics include what whales eat, how they are adapted for life in the deep ocean, conservation challenges, and practical ways the public can help. The setting is a working workshop, so it is not recommended for children under 7. Pre-registration is required by noon the day before the program.

Kids’ Cove offers an open-ended, free-play experience for children ages 0 to 5 and their caregivers, with this session featuring a maritime mask craft paired with a lively wiggle activity. The program is intentionally unplugged to support meaningful connections between caregivers, little ones, and their local maritime heritage. While the gallery is temporarily closed, activities take place in the museum auditorium. The format is flexible, allowing participants to come and go as needed and stay for any length of time. Each session stands on its own, so attending one, several, or all works without needing previous participation. Advance registration is encouraged.

Meet in the Visitor Center lobby for a leisurely hike exploring the natural side of Fort Macon. The walk will span both trail and beach, offering an easygoing way to experience the area.
