Tar Heels Go Walking Tour Guide Orientation I
Learn what it takes to become a volunteer guide with HWF’s Tar Heels Go Walking program. This orientation offers a thorough introduction to how the tours work, resources to support your guiding, hands-on practice with the new wireless audio system, and time to talk with experienced guides. Taking part in this training does not obligate you to volunteer, though completing the orientation and shadowing a tour are required before leading groups. Tours are mostly outdoors and continue in light rain as well as in hot or cold conditions. Guides should be able to comfortably and safely walk a route of about three quarters of a mile. A script is provided, and no prior guiding experience is necessary.

Yassine, now known as Snoopy Style, has become a respected surf guide in Taghazout, and the film revisits his first reunion with Kepa after fifteen years as both their lives, and Morocco, have evolved. Directed by Clint Davis. Fun Island turns to an international trip during the Covid period, where a tight-knit crew’s dream adventure is upended when two friends test positive and remain in quarantine on a spot nicknamed Fun Island. Wilmington filmmaker and former Outer Banks resident Jason Andre crafts a retro-tinged travel diary that captures both the exhilaration and the setbacks of chasing waves abroad.

This monthly MTG Canadian Highlander event features unsanctioned play run in Swiss rounds with a focus on having a little fun while competing. The format uses a points system instead of a traditional ban list, encouraging powerful cards and careful deck construction. Each deck must include at least 100 cards and follow a one-of-each rule, except for basic lands and cards that explicitly allow any number, such as Relentless Rats. Printed, uniform proxies are allowed because the format is not sanctioned by Wizards of the Coast. The entry fee is $8. For every paid player, $8 in store credit is added to the prize pool and awarded to participants who finish with a winning record. Celebrate summer by crafting a coiled rope basket in a public, three-hour class. Guided by art teacher Star Edwards, participants choose favorite colors and learn step by step how to design, coil, and stitch a basket they can complete during the session. The project uses 100% cotton materials that are soothing to work with and look beautiful at home. It is accessible for beginners and rewarding for experienced artists, and all ages are welcome. Riftbound: League of Legends TCG Tournament
Nexus Nights, a Riftbound TCG event at Cape Fear Games, features a constructed Swiss tournament limited to three rounds where players put their decks to the test in strategic head-to-head play. Entry is $8, and every participant receives a Nexus Night Pack. An additional $8 per player is added to the prize pool and awarded to winning records, and any undefeated competitor (X-0) also earns one pack from the most recent Standard set. To count as Standard, a set must have had a prerelease. Whether discovering the game or refining high-level strategies, participants can look forward to competitive matches and a friendly atmosphere.
MTG Tuesday Draft Tournament
A Magic: The Gathering draft tournament built around the latest Standard set. Players draft at the table to assemble a playable deck, then compete in Swiss rounds. Acoustic roots, blues, and swing take the spotlight as Durham, North Carolina songwriter and guitarist Jon Shain performs with longtime collaborator and bassist FJ Ventre. Shain is known for nimble fingerstyle guitar and vivid storytelling, blending Piedmont blues improvisation with bluegrass, swing, and ragtime. His catalog spans nine solo albums, two duo releases with Ventre, a live recording with the Jon Shain Trio, and a collaborative album with Joe Newberry. He is also the author of two Mel Bay Publications titles, a tribute to the legacy of W. C. Handy and a fingerstyle guitar method, and he earned top honors in the International Blues Challenge in the solo and duo category. His path has included study with jazz educator Paul Jeffrey, learning Piedmont blues while backing Big Boy Henry, and sharing the stage with North Carolina greats such as John Dee Holeman. Earlier, he co-founded Chapel Hill groups Flyin’ Mice and WAKE, appearing alongside artists like David Grisman, the Tony Rice Unit, Hot Tuna, and the Dixie Dregs, releasing four CDs and touring the East Coast. Beyond performing, he teaches and produces, including work on Donna Herula’s blues radio hit Bang at the Door. Ventre’s partnership with Shain reaches back to high school. A sought-after bassist and producer with a background in music performance and sound recording from the University of Massachusetts Lowell, he spent formative years in the Boston scene before settling in Chapel Hill, where he has performed with The Swang Brothers, Chris Stamey, Wes Collins, Huzzah, and many other North Carolina artists. Live sets also come from Dubtown Cosmonauts, Domocile, Acoustic Possums, Dirty Dead, a Superhero Jam, and more to be announced. Beyond the music, expect the Mystery Science Theatre Lounge, DJs, jugglers, spinners, side show acts, live art, and appearances by Megan Leah, a psychic medium, along with Bryan Stacy Art and Evol Gene. Food trucks are planned, and attendees may bring their own beverages and food. Family night offers free entry for kids, and children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Costumes are welcomed and encouraged. For everyone’s safety, there are rules in place: no fireworks, no illegal drugs, and no knives, guns, or other weapons. Dogs are not permitted, while cats are welcome. A ticket is required to enter, and a limited number of lodging passes will be available.
