DND - The Silvan Empire

In this Dungeons & Dragons campaign with Jesse, the Silvan Empire sparkles with celebration while unseen dangers gather beneath the surface. Participants journey from silk-adorned festivities and lilting music into hidden places to expose the darkness and seek justice in Silhou. This campaign is for ages 16 and up. The cost is $10 per person.

An Evening with : The String Cheese Incident

The String Cheese Incident takes the stage at Roanoke Island Festival Park as part of the Just Keep Spinning Tour, live in OBX and hosted by LIVE FROM OBX. General admission is priced at $53 plus taxes and fees, and $1 from each ticket benefits the Sweet Relief Musicians Fund. This fund offers financial support to music industry professionals, including the teams who make live shows happen, during times of need. General admission provides access to designated areas at the venue.

Vital Breath Harmonica Workshop

At the Baum Center, this harmonica series welcomes enthusiasts and people who are just getting started. Designed for beginners, it covers posture, how to hold and place the harmonica and mouth, instrument care, first steps in making music, and how regular practice can support better breathing and overall health. Each session lasts one hour and includes no less than 30 minutes of group playing. Sessions build on each other while still accommodating newcomers. Donate $5 for a starter harmonica, plus $3 to $5 for the instructor. The instructor is MaryAnn Toboz, a local musician with decades of harmonica experience.

Beach Yoga

Enjoy an all-levels yoga session on the sand beside the ocean, designed to help you relax and feel refreshed. Bring a blanket or towel for comfort. A mat is optional, though it may pick up sand. Signing up in advance is encouraged to receive updates, including any changes due to weather, and to stay informed about schedule adjustments. Pricing options include $22 for a single class, $90 for a five-class pass valid for six months, and $160 for a ten-class pass valid for six months. The cancellation policy allows changes up to one hour before class starts, with no refunds. Rescheduling can be completed through your account. Additional offerings include private beach yoga and sound baths.

Bridge Lessons

Learn the basics of bridge with guidance from a duplicate bridge player. The class continues for at least six weeks and is held at the Thomas A. Baum Senior Center. It is designed to help participants understand the fundamentals of the game.

Essie Somma Solo Exhibit

In the Vault Gallery, original work by Essie Somma takes center stage in an exhibition titled Undomesticated. The presentation brings together a body of paintings alongside a single video installation that considers identity as shifting rather than fixed. Scenes of home life, everyday habits, and familiar symbols from American culture are reframed to unsettle conventional expectations of femininity. Fragmented figures assert control and invite multiple points of view, while lines between human and nonhuman, interior and exterior, and disorder and structure dissolve to reveal a reality that is flexible, intuitive, playful, and resilient. An opening reception will offer a chance to meet the artist and view the work, and the gathering is free to the public.

Tiny Art Big Room

An invitational fills Dare Arts’ Courtroom Gallery with tiny works that play with scale, setting a large room against small creations. It gathers 31 local artists working in miniature, many compressing their usual subjects into compact pieces. Expect a range of media from petite paintings to intentionally small ceramics, encouraging close looking to find fine detail, humor, and inventive touches in every work. An opening reception provides a chance to meet the artists and view the artwork together, with no charge to attend and all are welcome. The exhibition is on view in the Courtroom Gallery.

Create your own unique treasure box in this workshop. You will decorate a wooden box using either a raven skull or brass adornment, along with moss, flowers, bones, and trinkets. Choose from two different box sizes and your main adornment, such as a raven skull, brass animal (beetle, snail, snake, bee, etc.), or raw crystals. Skilled artisans will guide you in arranging these materials to craft a personal keepsake, perfect for storing talismans, crystals, and magical tools. All materials are provided, and no experience is needed.

Participants learn the process and use a machine designed for rope making to make rope themselves. The program is covered by park admission and may change if weather conditions require it. Each guest must have a ticket to take part.

Arquebus Demo

At Roanoke Island Festival Park’s Settlement Site, this program explores how English settlers approached colonization as a military effort and features a live firing of an arquebus, a matchlock small arm. The park is the only historic site in the state that demonstrates matchlock small arms. Participation is included with park admission, and a ticket is required for each guest. Programming may change due to inclement weather.

Kids Summer Art Parties

National Board Certified Art Teacher Mari Beth LaRose leads a series of eight Kids Summer Art Parties at Dare Arts, each centered on a different creative theme. Projects include a wave painting, a glow-in-the-dark marine constellation, Aboriginal-style shark or whale painting, a ship in a bottle, pelican portraits, mixed media sea turtles, a bright flamingo piece, and a playful surfing pineapple. Classes are designed for children ages 7 and up. Space is limited to 15 students, and at least 7 participants are needed for a session to run. Preregistration is required. Every class provides all materials along with a snack and water, and kids are encouraged to wear clothes that can get paint on them. Tuition is $40 per student for Dare Arts members and $45 for non-members, with advance payment by credit card online. Scholarships are available. Registrations cannot be moved to future workshops and no-shows are not refundable. If a cancellation occurs, a refund is offered only if the spot can be filled. Bring binoculars and a field guide if you have them, along with sunscreen and insect repellent, and note that a limited number of binoculars and field guides will be available to borrow. Meet at the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center. These walks take place throughout the year, except during the Wings Over Water Wildlife Festival in October and December.

Influences from art, science, psychology, and design thinking shape a gallery experience that encourages slowing down, looking closely, and reconsidering how meaning forms. Many pieces include playful, hands-on elements that reveal new perspectives over time. An opening reception takes place during downtown Manteo’s First Friday festivities, free and open to the public, with an opportunity to meet the artist and view the work. The exhibition is presented in the Vault Gallery.

Fresh- A Plein Air Event

Fresh is a returning plein air gathering from Dare Arts that celebrates the tradition of painting outdoors. Inspired by open-air practices that took root in 19th-century France, the event invites artists to head outside, find their scenes, and create new work. Artists can register online or by phone. Member entry is $60 and nonmember entry is $70, with fees due at the time of registration. The event will be judged by award-winning representational painter Jeremy Sams of Archdale, North Carolina, recognized for acrylic landscape work. He is a member of the Plein Air Painters of the Southeast and North Carolina Plein Air Painters, and he founded the Fellowship of Plein Air Painters. He will also lead a separate two-day plein air workshop at Dare Arts during the week of the event, with registration opening soon on his website. Completed pieces from participating artists will be shown in an exhibition at Dare Arts, with a free public opening reception held during First Friday in downtown Manteo. After the opening, the exhibition remains on view in the Courtroom Gallery during regular gallery hours.
