Sling Gun Demo

At Roanoke Island Festival Park, a live demonstration aboard the Elizabeth II features the firing of a sling gun and highlights how firearms helped protect passengers and crew during the Roanoke voyages. This program is included with admission to the park, may change or be canceled in poor weather, and requires a ticket for each participant.

KDDB New Skater Night

New to roller skating or roller derby? The Kill Devil Derby Brigade hosts New Skater Night, a friendly, non-contact session where you can learn skating basics in a welcoming environment. Weather the Storm: Dare Arts Summer 2026 Courtyard Installation

Enjoy an immersive outdoor art installation at Dare Arts’ Courtyard called Weather the Storm. Created by artist Lara E. Parks, it uses light, shadow, sound, movement, and fabric to create a mixed-media experience that shifts with changing weather and natural light. Stop by during the day or evening hours to take in how the installation transforms over time.

Ropemaking

Explore the craft of turning fibers into strong lines at the Adventure Museum in Roanoke Island Festival Park. This hands on session highlights how rope is made and why it was vital aboard the vessels that transported the earliest English settlers to Roanoke Island. Try the process yourself using a ropemaking machine and watch each strand twist into shape. Programs are included with park admission, are subject to change due to inclement weather, and each guest must purchase a ticket to participate.

Kids Summer Art Parties

Kids can get creative at Dare Arts with a summer series of eight themed art parties taught by National Board Certified art teacher Mari Beth LaRose. Each class explores a different project, with one session featuring a Surfing Pineapple Painting. All supplies are included, along with a snack and water. The class is open to ages 7 and up, requires at least seven participants to run, and is limited to fifteen students. Advance registration and online credit card payment are required. Sunrise 5k/1 Mile 2026 Beach Race Series at Jennette's Pier presented by Village Realty

Choose between a beach 5K or a 1 mile run as part of the Outer Banks Sunrise Beach Race Series presented by Village Realty. This family friendly event welcomes walkers and features chip timing on the sand, with coastal views along the wide shoreline of Nags Head. After crossing the finish line, enjoy cold breakfast items and refreshments. Registration includes chip timing, an event shirt, a finisher medal, and post race refreshments. FIT Colon Cancer Screening

Outer Banks Health is providing free colon cancer screening at Outer Banks Family YMCA. Adults ages 50 to 75 can pick up a take-home fecal immunochemical test kit to screen for colon cancer. Personal results will be provided to those who attend the event. A1C screenings are also available, offering a look at average blood glucose over the previous three months. Weather The Storm - A Mixed Media Courtyard Installation by Lara Parks

Weather The Storm is a mixed media installation by artist Lara E. Parks presented in The Courtyard. Designed as a public installation that shifts with the elements, it creates an atmospheric experience during both day and night. Light, shadow, sound, and natural movement work together so that observing the piece becomes active and immersive. It reflects the range of emotions people may feel as they move through their days, from bright and colorful moments to those that feel more stormy. Visitors are encouraged to return at different times while the work is on view to see how it changes and weathers the elements. Lara Parks is a mixed media artist with a BFA in Textile Art. She combines fabric with nontraditional materials, drawing on a love of printing and slow stitching to tell stories in her work. Seeking ways to move textile art beyond frames and walls, she has explored public installations, theatre sets, costume designs, and other wearables. Creating environments that surround viewers and pull them into a world has become a regular focus in recent years, including designing and building sets for a local theatre.

OBX Silent Disco brings a twist on trivia to Tap That OBX with OBX Soundbites, a mashup of music bingo and musical know how. Instead of numbers, the bingo cards list song titles and artists from a range of eras and styles, including 70s disco, 80s movie soundtracks, and old school hip hop. A DJ plays brief clips, and players mark their squares by naming the track or artist. The first to complete a row earns bragging rights and prizes. Admission is free.

Village of Nags Head 5k/1 Mile Road Race series presented by Village Realty

An annual chip timed 5k and 1 mile road event welcomes walkers, runners and racers of all ages to the streets of West Nags Head. The course and staging area are set behind the Outer Banks Mall near milepost 14 on Highway 158, with the start and finish at the intersection of West Seachase and South Links Drive behind the Outback Steakhouse. Parking is available at the mall, and portable restrooms will be on site. Race morning features on-site check in, packet pickup and late walk up registration at the start area, as there is no day-before pickup. Each entry includes an event T-shirt, a finisher medal, chip timing and post race snacks and refreshments. Awards for the 5k honor the top three overall men and women, first place masters for ages 40 and up and first place youth for ages 14 and under. The 1 mile recognizes the first overall male and female. Entry fees are $45 for adults, $40 for youth 17 and under and $40 with a military discount. Results will be emailed to participants and posted on The OBX Running Company website, and free photos and videos will be shared through their Facebook page. Fresh- A Plein Air Event

Fresh is a returning plein air gathering from Dare Arts that celebrates the tradition of painting outdoors. Inspired by open-air practices that took root in 19th-century France, the event invites artists to head outside, find their scenes, and create new work. Artists can register online or by phone. Member entry is $60 and nonmember entry is $70, with fees due at the time of registration. The event will be judged by award-winning representational painter Jeremy Sams of Archdale, North Carolina, recognized for acrylic landscape work. He is a member of the Plein Air Painters of the Southeast and North Carolina Plein Air Painters, and he founded the Fellowship of Plein Air Painters. He will also lead a separate two-day plein air workshop at Dare Arts during the week of the event, with registration opening soon on his website. Completed pieces from participating artists will be shown in an exhibition at Dare Arts, with a free public opening reception held during First Friday in downtown Manteo. After the opening, the exhibition remains on view in the Courtroom Gallery during regular gallery hours. This annual 5K Run & Walk in the Outer Banks brings the community together to honor first responders and military service members while raising funds for Tunnel to Towers programs. The Tunnel to Towers Run & Walk Series commemorates FDNY firefighter Stephen Siller, who carried his gear through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001 and gave his life in the effort. Participants take part in remembrance of all who were lost on 9/11 and in support of those who continue to make extraordinary sacrifices in the line of duty.

Halloween International Film Festival 2026

Now in its seventh year, this celebration of independent cinema returns to North Carolina’s historic, famously haunted Outer Banks, highlighting horror, Halloween themes, and the offbeat spirit of the season. Across two full days and nights, the program showcases independent short and feature films from around the world. Beyond the screenings, there are filmmaker Q&A sessions, evening meet and greets, and photo opportunities on the Orange Carpet, all presented alongside Manteo’s Halloween Island festivities, when local restaurants, bars, and hotels transform into Halloween pop ups. Screenings take place in the indoor theater at Roanoke Island Festival Park in Manteo, a setting where costumed interpreters and hands on exhibits explore the story of the earliest English colonists and the enduring mystery of the Lost Colony, alongside the Elizabeth II, a full size working replica of a 16th century sailing ship. Set along a coastline often called the Graveyard of the Atlantic, the Outer Banks has thousands of shipwrecks offshore and a reputation as one of the most haunted places in the country. Roanoke Island, home to Manteo and the park, was the site of the first English settlement in 1587, where over a hundred colonists disappeared without explanation, a mystery remembered as the Lost Colony.
