Outer Banks Sweep the Beach Trash Art Contest

Kitty Hawk Kites and Dare Arts Council present a coastal cleanup-inspired art contest that turns beach and sound debris into creative works. After pieces are submitted, they are installed along the TrART Walk at Jockey’s Ridge Crossing, then select works are brought to Jockey’s Ridge State Park for Earth Fair OBX, where winners are announced at the Kitty Hawk Kites booth. Each category winner receives a $200 prize. Awards include People’s Choice, determined by public voting, a Youth Award for artists aged 12 or younger, Best Plastics Art highlighting inventive use of recovered plastic, and Best Litter Art recognizing creative combinations of other found debris such as cigarette butts, styrofoam, and paper goods. Entries are judged on originality and creativity, how well the work explores the theme of waste and sustainability, thoughtful use of materials, and its connection to personal experience or Outer Banks waste issues. Submissions are accepted at the Flagship Store in Nags Head at Jockey’s Ridge Crossing, with a limit of 10 entries per category. Artwork must be suitable for outdoor display and include any mounting or setup materials needed. A brief description with a photo and the total weight of collected trash used in the piece is requested, and entries by artists 12 or younger should be identified. Hazardous materials should not be used, or must be safely sealed. Artwork cannot be sold at the Earth Day event at the park. Park officials are not responsible for transporting or potential damage to artwork, and Kitty Hawk Kites staff will coordinate placement, shipping, and security.

Aaron Canipe Photography Exhibit

The Vault Gallery presents the most extensive showcase yet of Aaron Canipe's original photography, centered on his series South of Heaven. Created primarily across North Carolina over several years, this body of work reflects on faith, doubt, and a fading sense of innocence within a moody southern landscape. Blending wry humor with a hint of disillusion, the images explore unease and curiosity about the world, prompting more existential and dreamlike questions than definitive answers. This marks the first public presentation of the project. An opening reception offers a chance to meet the artist and view the work, coinciding with downtown Manteo's First Friday festivities, and admission is free and open to all. The exhibition will be on view in the Vault Gallery.

The exhibition opens at the Dare Arts Gallery in downtown Manteo with a free public reception, then continues on view in the Dare Arts Courtroom Gallery during regular gallery hours. Her work draws inspiration from the local coastal landscape, the rhythm of life by the sea, travels, and the vivid colors and natural beauty of Costa Rica. Dare Arts has issued a call for entries, with a prospectus and drop-off scheduling available online. Businesses interested in sponsoring the awards can contact Dare Arts. Bluegrass Island Nights

Bluegrass Island Nights spotlights Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper at Roanoke Island Festival Park with a performance that celebrates bluegrass roots while embracing bold, imaginative playing. Cleveland’s fiddle leads the charge, shaped by a lifelong fascination with “Orange Blossom Special,” where trainlike sounds, crisp rhythmic bowing, and spontaneous variations fuel the momentum. Raised in Henryville, Indiana, he grew up around old-time and bluegrass at local jams and festivals. His grandparents hosted regular gatherings at the American Legion, and he began on fiddle at age four. At the Kentucky School for the Blind in Louisville he studied violin through the Suzuki method, refining classical technique at school and fiddling at home. Trips to Bill Monroe’s festival in Bean Blossom put him near the genre’s giants, and at nine he performed with Monroe. By twelve, music historian Dave Samuelson was curating Braille-labeled tapes that guided his listening, and in 1993 he played the International Bluegrass Music Association awards show with the Bluegrass Youth All-Stars. After high school he turned professional with Jeff White, then Dale Ann Bradley and Rhonda Vincent. In 2006 he formed Flamekeeper, a band honored seven times as the IBMA Instrumental Group of the Year, featuring Josh Richards, Nathan Livers, Jasiah Shrode, and Chris Douglas. He has collaborated widely with bluegrass greats and stays connected to his Southern Indiana community when off the road. His accolades include 12 IBMA Fiddler of the Year awards, induction into the National Fiddler’s Hall of Fame in 2018, a 2018 Grammy nomination for Fiddler’s Dream, a 2019 Grammy win for Tall Fiddler, the 2019 documentary Flamekeeper: The Michael Cleveland Story, recognition as a National Endowment for the Arts Heritage Fellow in 2022, and a 2024 Grammy nomination for The Lovin’ of the Game.

Instruction focuses on a floating frame approach, arranging the florals between two glass panels for a clear, see-through presentation inside a slim black metal frame. Personal paper mementos such as wedding invitations or baby announcements may be incorporated, and participants may bring their own snacks and beverages. Illume: Full Moon Retreat for Women

Illume is an immersive full moon retreat for women in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, created for those ready to see clearly and live from what they discover. The name points to inner truth coming into view. Rather than a quick reset or getaway, this intimate experience centers on illumination, integration, and embodiment. Through advanced coaching, expressive movement and dance, breathwork, ritual, and emotionally integrative art, participants are supported to recognize what is authentic, release what no longer serves, and ground their insights in the body. Nature is integrated throughout the experience, with moonlit rituals on the beach, forest bathing, and outdoor embodiment practices in the gentle warmth of late spring. It is designed for women at a meaningful crossroads who want to stand firmly in their own light and move ahead with clear direction, self-assurance, and alignment. Attendance is by application or referral to preserve a focused small-group environment, and capacity is limited. Lodging options include solo accommodations with a private bath at $899, solo with a shared bath at $799, and a shared room and bath at $599. An early-bird discount of $100 is available. Cancellations 30 or more days before the start are refunded in full minus a non-refundable $35 processing fee. Cancellations within 7 days of the start are non-refundable. In cases of severe weather, natural events, travel restrictions, or other circumstances beyond control, any adjustments or cancellations are at the organizer’s discretion in line with guidance from local authorities. If the organizer cancels under such conditions, participants may receive a credit toward a future retreat or a partial refund, depending on expenses that cannot be recovered.
