Paddle Event: Stolley's Park to West Leach Park

Paddle a scenic five mile stretch of the Little Sioux River as it winds through Spencer, passing woodland and open countryside. The route begins at Stolley Park River Access and ends at West Leach Park in Clay County. Plan to unload boats and gear at the put in, then move vehicles to the take out and carpool back for the shuttle. This trip includes riffles and obstacles like deadfalls, log jams, and woody debris, so solid boat control is important. It is intended for paddlers with some experience and is not recommended for first timers. Expect roughly four hours on the water, with actual time influenced by weather, river levels, and other conditions. Online registration is required so organizers can share any updates or cancellations, and space is limited. Bring your own canoe or kayak along with paddles, life jacket, and all other necessities, as no equipment is provided. A properly worn life jacket is required while on the river. For comfort and safety, bring water, lunch, and snacks, and consider insect repellent and sunscreen. Quick drying clothing, a hat or cap, and sunglasses help with sun protection. Wear closed toed footwear such as water shoes or old sneakers, and avoid sandals or flip flops. The trip will be led by Shelby County and Iowa DNR naturalist Christina Roelofs.
