Photo 101 - Summer Fun
Geared to students in grades 2 to 3, this introductory photography class helps young creators build the foundations of great pictures and see everyday moments with fresh eyes. Led by instructor Raksha Shrestha, participants explore perspective, strengthen observation skills, and make a custom photo frame to display a favorite shot. Offered through the Hastings Museum’s Summer Fun program, tuition is $60 for members and $70 for non-members. The Ashley Kulwicki Scholarship covers the full fee for eligible students enrolled in the Free and Reduced Lunch Program, with limited funds available and one scholarship per student. At Good Samaritan and Elks, youth ages 9 to 15 can develop their game at a skill-building golf camp taught by an experienced golfer. Now accepting registrations for six weeks of baseball and softball camps at D-BAT Grand Island. Designed for athletes ages 6 to 14, each session focuses on building skills through instruction, organized drills, and games. This match uses a generic format, involving multiple stages with varying targets and distances. It offers consistent and repeatable practice to keep your skills sharp, occurring every Tuesday.

Young creators in grades 4 to 6 can take part in a hands-on art camp guided by instructor Katie Karr. Participants will explore a range of materials and techniques as they craft beaded animal keychains, practice lettering and design inspired by street art and graffiti, shape clay pots, and carve stamps to print original artwork. Some projects may be messy, and certain materials might not wash out of clothing, so dressing accordingly is recommended. Tuition is $60 for members and $70 for non-members. The Ashley Kulwicki Scholarship is available to cover the full class fee for eligible students enrolled in the Free and Reduced Lunch Program. Funds are limited and one scholarship per student is offered, so applying early is encouraged. At Espressions, Friday Night Murder Club centers on solving Cain’s Jawbone, the notoriously challenging murder mystery created by Edward Powys Mathers, known as Torquemada. First published in 1934 as part of The Torquemada Puzzle Book and republished in 2019 by Unbound in collaboration with The Laurence Sterne Trust, this puzzle asks participants to untangle six murders by rearranging the book’s pages. A shop wall becomes a shared crime board as pages are moved in search of the correct sequence and the solution. Coffee and a bite to eat are available while the investigation unfolds.

A wide lineup of food trucks serves local favorites including Honduran dishes, tacos, pizza, grilled cheese, ice cream, coffee, shaved ice, pineapple whip, cookies, and more. First responders and military personnel can receive food truck coupons valued at $20 per person at the event’s information table. The night concludes with a fireworks display in the field north of the church, presented by Chief Industries and sponsored by the Morledge Family and Credit Management Services. This month only, the United Harvest mobile food pantry distribution will take place on the fourth Saturday and, barring unforeseen circumstances, will be held at the PEACE Center as scheduled. To receive food, remain in your vehicle for the entire distribution and do not exit. Clear space in your trunk or truck bed so volunteers can place the food there. Please limit the number of households traveling together, as each vehicle may receive up to four orders. If you are picking up for someone else, bring a completed proxy form for the intended recipient. To obtain a proxy form, call the First Presbyterian Church at 402-462-5147 or the First United Methodist Church at 402-463-6733. Enter the line of cars from 5th Street or South Lincoln and do not access the line from Burlington. About 30 volunteers are needed, with sign-up details to be shared later, and volunteers must be 16 or older.

A charitable 9-hole golf scramble at Poco Creek Golf Course in Aurora supports the Plainsman Museum as it marks its 50th anniversary. The day includes check-in and time on the driving range before a shotgun start, with a charcuterie spread available later in the event. Step into history at the Plainsman Museum with A More Perfect Union, a timeline exhibition honoring America’s 250th Anniversary. Explore key moments in United States history alongside stories from Hamilton County, Nebraska. Throughout the museum, a series of banners highlights local pioneers, veterans, inventors, sports writers, and other community contributors. Interactive QR codes provide read-aloud features, family trees, and additional background about the people featured. The exhibition is available during museum open hours and is included with standard admission. Families can also enjoy the History Detectives: Special Patriotic Edition scavenger hunt for children and anyone young at heart. A new video timeline is planned for the museum’s movie theatre exhibit, presenting national and Hamilton County history side by side.

Imagination Bacon is a bacon and brew celebration that offers tastings of local craft beers and wines alongside creative bacon inspired appetizers. The event supports Dolly Parton's Imagination Library Program, which mails free, age appropriate books to registered children from birth to age five in Hall, Hamilton, Howard, and Merrick Counties. The goal is to help children begin kindergarten with a collection of their own books at home. Over the past two years, more than 650 people attended, bolstering work across Heartland United Way's four counties.

Stop three of the Tap to Tap: 6/34 Highway Series comes to First Street Brewing Co. in Hastings. This 5K heads out from the taproom onto the bike trail, climbs toward the college, then returns to the brewery for a pint. The route is flat and paved, built for speed and ideal for anyone working toward a third Highway Passport stamp. Cross the finish and pick up a First Street Hastings enamel pin. After the run, spend time in the taproom, on the patio, or in the beer garden, and enjoy local fare from the food truck as First Street Brewing showcases craft, culture, and community.
NHCA Jamboree Open Horse Show
An open horse show welcoming riders of all ages. Classes cover showmanship, English, Western, ranch, and speed events. Divisions are 10 and under, 11-13, 14-18, 19-39, and 40 and over. Race #6 in the Ignite Karting Nebraska Championship Series features competition on a 1-mile, 7-turn course for racers, crews, and spectators. The day starts with gates and registration opening, followed by transponder pickup at the east end of the timing and scoring building. Rookie and novice drivers meet at the winner’s circle for a briefing, then all drivers take part in a mandatory meeting. The first group heads onto the track, and the racing program wraps up later in the day.
NE State Fair LEAD Reception
A reception will be held in the Five Points Arena VIP Room, presented by the Nebraska LEAD Program and the Nebraska LEAD Alumni Association. Hosting duties will be handled by the NE LEAD Alumni Board of Directors along with Kurtis Harms, director of the Nebraska LEAD Program. The gathering offers a chance to meet the new director and reconnect with LEAD Fellows. The VIP Room is accessible by stairs or an elevator located immediately to the right just inside the arena’s main entrance. A Board of Directors meeting will take place prior to the reception.
