Habitat Steward Summer Series: Install a Pollinator Garden

This hands-on session focuses on pollinators and native plants. Participants will install native species in a demonstration garden, take a tour of the greenhouse, and look for wildflowers blooming around the sanctuary. Participants are welcome to bring home native plants from the greenhouse for their own gardens and landscaping. Bring a water bottle and wear comfortable shoes. Gardening tools and knee pads are provided, along with coffee, snacks, and native plants to take home.

Celebrate pollinators, native plants, and the beauty of Nebraska’s landscapes at a friendly, all-ages festival with free admission. The day features talks from Sara of Starflower Botanicals on medicinal uses of native plants, Amanda from Rowe Sanctuary on Nebraska native plants, and Head Beekeeper Amanda from Happy Hive Honey Bottling Company & Learning Center with a presentation on pollination. Those interested in a deeper, hands-on experience can head to Rowe Sanctuary for activities that include installing native plants in a pollinator demonstration garden, touring the greenhouse, and checking out wildflowers in bloom. Participants are welcome to take home native plants for their own gardens, and registration is available online.

Gone Fishing Casting Challenge

Celebrate the fishing spirit with a hands-on casting challenge that lets you show off your angling skills. Every participating child can make a slip bobber craft at no cost. All visitors can also get a free downloadable photo with a fun background to remember the day.

Children ages 5 to 12 can build reading confidence in this free program by reading aloud to a dog. Registered therapy animals and their handlers will be there to listen as kids read. Participants who complete three books or three chapters with the team earn a prize. The session is designed for youth and the therapy teams to focus on reading practice in a supportive setting. Adults with questions about becoming a therapy team can contact Youth Services Librarian Shawna Lindner. No registration is required, and the session takes place in the youth area.

Habitat Week at Platte River Safari Camp is a nature day camp at Audubon’s Rowe Sanctuary designed for students currently in grades 2 through 5. Participants explore the Platte River and nearby landscapes to see how wetlands, prairies, woodlands, and river channels work together to support wildlife, with special attention to birds. Hands-on learning spans natural and physical science, language arts, history, and art, and activities may include wading in wetlands, investigating prairie life, and other experiences that might get campers wet and muddy in the name of discovery. American Legion Post #52 hosts a regional tournament that welcomes players at every experience level. The day starts with singles that include two warmup rounders, then moves into double elimination brackets. Divisions are set by CPI, with Tier 1 from 7.50 to 12.00, Tier 2 from 6.50 to 7.49, Tier 3 from 5.50 to 6.49, and Tier 4 up to 5.49. Singles entry fees are $40 for Tier 1, $35 for Tier 2 and Tier 3, and $30 for Tier 4. Singles entries remain within their assigned divisions. After singles, doubles are offered at $35 per player or $70 per team and include Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 divisions, with BYOP and coed options noted in the payout details. Blind draws follow, with one division for Tiers 1 and 2 that requires a 6.5 CPI minimum and another for Tiers 3 and 4 with a 6.49 CPI maximum. Blind draw entry is $35 and entries stay in their divisions. Sit n go games may be added if time allows. Directors may adjust player placement and may combine divisions if participation is low. Payouts are based on the number of entries. For singles, Tier 1 returns 85 percent of entries while Tiers 2 through 4 return 70 to 75 percent, with placement percentages that scale as the field grows. Doubles and blind draws return 80 percent of entries, with deeper placement payouts at higher entry counts. Gold and higher members receive a $10 discount on listed entry fees. Food and a full bar are available on site through The Kearney American Legion. Outside beverages are not permitted. Pre-registration is available and day-of registration includes a $5 additional fee.

This Community Fishing Night at Windmill SRA Lake 2 is hosted by Nebraska Game and Parks. The Family Fishing Trailer will be on site with free loaner rods and reels, bait, and hands-on instruction. Fishing Instructors will be present to share tips and answer questions. It is designed for people of all ages who are new to fishing or coming back after time away. After sunset, Audubon’s Rowe Sanctuary becomes a welcoming setting for family-friendly nighttime exploration. Special lights and white sheets help reveal the creatures that are active after dark, and families can register for evening prairie hikes that travel through prairies and woodlands along the Platte River. Disney’s Frozen takes the stage at the Merryman Performing Arts Center, featuring music and lyrics by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez with a book by Jennifer Lee. Let's Go Birding Together Bird Walk

An inclusive Let’s Go Birding Together bird walk welcomes LGBTQ+ community members, allies, families, and anyone who enjoys birds and the outdoors. The outing begins at the Iain Nicolson Audubon Center and covers about a half mile on Rowe Sanctuary trails, offering a relaxed pace along the Platte River with tips for identifying local birds and taking in the sounds and sights of Nebraska’s summer birdlife.
