MAKE YOUR OWN HERBAL SIMMER POT BLENDS

Franklin · Wild Willow Herbals, 83 New Hampton Rd

Community Herbalist Amanda Calkins of Wild Willow Herbals leads a cozy, hands-on workshop at Wild Willow Farm in Franklin, New Hampshire focused on creating personalized herbal simmer pot blends for the holiday season. The session is $45 per person and limited to 10 participants. A simmer pot is a gentle infusion of fragrant herbs, fruits, spices, and other botanicals warmed in water so their aroma fills a space with a welcoming feel. Beyond scent, these blends can be crafted with intention to comfort the home, honor seasonal transitions, greet guests, support personal rituals, and invite feelings of peace, gratitude, abundance, and protection. The workshop covers safe preparation and use, the aromatic and traditional qualities of common ingredients, ideas for seasonal, comforting, cleansing, festive, and intention-based combinations, and how to build a balanced blend by considering scent, color, texture, and personal intuition. Each attendee creates a custom blend and leaves with one full 8‑ounce jar of dried botanicals for simmering. Additional 8‑ounce jars can be made and purchased on site for $25 each, with ribbon provided for gifting to teachers, coworkers, coaches, instructors, hosts, friends, family, neighbors, caregivers, clients or customers, volunteers, holiday party hosts, or anyone who could use a little seasonal warmth. No prior herbal experience is required, and all materials and instruction are included. Amanda is the founder of Wild Willow Herbals at Wild Willow Farm and has trained through Misty Meadows Herbal Center and One Willow Apothecary. Her teaching is grounded in traditional herbal knowledge, hands-on learning, seasonal living, and helping people build meaningful relationships with plants. She creates welcoming, accessible learning spaces that encourage discovery through the senses, creativity, and personal experience while honoring each person’s unique path with the plants. Wild Willow Farm, a 1900 farmhouse, hosts intimate workshops, retreats, circles, and seasonal offerings led by local herbalists, artists, instructors, and practitioners, inviting participants to slow down, reconnect, learn, and heal through creativity, connection, and community.

Emily Franklin presents Love & Other Monsters

    Concord · Gibson's Bookstore, 45 S Main St

Bestselling author Emily Franklin visits Gibson’s Bookstore to share her new novel, Love & Other Monsters, a historical story centered on eighteen-year-old Claire Clairmont during the turbulent summer of 1816. Narrated through Claire’s perspective, the book traces her quest for independence and love as she travels to Lake Geneva with her stepsister Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, Percy Shelley, Lord Byron, and John Polidori. That charged season of storms, creative rivalry, and tangled loyalties helped give rise to Frankenstein and the modern vampire, even as Claire’s own role faded from public memory. In the novel, Claire embarks on an affair with Byron, urges Mary and Shelley to follow him to Switzerland, records the group’s secrets in her journal, and learns to forage when climate upheaval leads to shortages. When her 1816 diary disappears and everyone around her has a reason to keep it hidden, she confronts the mystery of why her story was nearly lost. The book explores celebrity culture, climate crisis, complicated femininity, and the monsters we create on the page and in life, offering a blend of historical intimacy and romantic tension reminiscent of works like Hamnet and Pride and Prejudice. Franklin is the author of twenty-five books, including The Lioness of Boston, inspired by the life of Isabella Stewart Gardner, now in its eleventh printing and once featured as a clue on Jeopardy!. Her work has appeared in publications such as The New York Times, The Boston Globe, The Kenyon Review, and Guernica, has been featured on National Public Radio, was longlisted for the London Sunday Times Short Story Award, and has been recognized by the Association of Jewish Libraries.
