Rivalry ProjectsM&T Fourth Friday Opening Reception: "Propagation and Endurance"
Buffalo Arts Studio hosts the opening reception for Propagation and Endurance, an exhibition of ceramic and sculptural work by Deborah Stewart presented as part of M&T Bank’s Fourth Friday at Tri-Main Center. Centered on the forms and functions of seed pods, Stewart pairs sturdy clay pods with spare steel and wire frameworks to reflect how fragile structures shelter, mature, and disperse new life. The dialogue between pliant clay and rigid metal invites a reconsideration of what reads as delicate and what reads as strong. Developed through years of close observation and press mold experimentation, the series draws inspiration from pods such as sweetgum, eucalyptus, Turk’s cap lily, and pinesap. Stewart’s experiences in hiking, camping, and gardening, along with a background in modern dance, inform the sense of motion and breath that carries through the work. Within the space, ceramic and metal elements guide the eye like wayfinding, suggesting the journeys seeds undertake as they search for a place to land. Admission is free and the reception is open to the public.

Town BallroomPatrick Sweany - Sportsmens
Patrick Sweany performs at Sportsmens, with admission priced at $20 plus an online fee. His latest album, Baby, It’s Late, arrives after a seven-year gap between full-length releases and reflects on time passing and growing older. In the period since Ancient Noise, he navigated major changes, kept his Blue Monday nights at The 5 Spot in East Nashville centered on 50s and 60s blues with The Tiger Beats featuring McKinley James, Jason Smay, and Ted Pecchio, launched the soul and funk project SUPER FELON with JD Simo, Adam Abrashoff, Ted Pecchio, and Robbie Crowell, and returned to writing and recording. He began the new material at home on a Tascam 388 in his Bongo Room studio, then invited collaborators to sessions at JD Simo’s House of Grease and McKinley James’s Red Lodge. Recorded live in the room without headphones and self-produced for the first time, the songs embrace a raw, direct feel that channels the strain and release of recent years. The collection nods to past corners of his catalog while exploring new ones, from the gritty blues rock of My Time Ain’t Long to the intimate ballads Christmas Parade and See Through, and on to the hook-driven Golden Fields and the 70s organ funk of Trouble With Love. With more than 25 years of writing, recording, and touring, he leans into patience, letting the songs arrive when they are ready.

Festive fun follows with a cooperative craft guessing game, stomp painting on bubble wrap, handmade mini pinatas, and personalized fizzy fruit drinks. A focus on color brings a rainbow experiment with markers, decoupaged containers, an approachable look at the history of blue, and bright paper blossoms. Animal inspired projects include a storytime, articulated crab collages made with mixed materials, fruit critter creations, and sloth themed pencil toppers. The week concludes with arts of the world, featuring a Puerto Rican guiro you build yourself, utensil puppets, quilt style paper squares, and a jazz themed read aloud. It is designed for young makers who enjoy creating, experimenting, and exploring together.
