Live music in Lansing, NY

Luna, the New York band founded in 1991 by singer and guitarist Dean Wareham after Galaxie 500 ended, is in the spotlight. The group released seven studio albums before pausing in 2005, regrouped a decade later to tour in 2015, and returned with new music in 2017 with the LP A Sentimental Education along with an instrumental EP titled A Place of Greater Safety. Their catalog has also been revisited through recent reissues, including a deluxe double LP edition of Penthouse on Rhino and Lunafied, a two-LP collection of their 1990s cover recordings.

This monthly listening club explores two jazz albums at a time, pairing a well known release with a lesser known pick. Participants reflect on what they heard in a variety of ways, whether by sharing poems or artwork created while listening, presenting research on the musicians, or explaining why a particular track resonated. The current discussion centers on First Light by Freddie Hubbard and Native Dancer by Wayne Shorter. The session concludes by selecting the next two records to explore.
