NYC Ska Orchestra blends big band jazz, soul, and R&B with foundational Jamaican styles such as ska, mento, rock steady, and reggae in a live performance. The 20-member ensemble is led by Kevin Batchelor, a celebrated trumpeter, singer, arranger, and educator, and features Jamaican percussionist and vocalist Larry MacDonald along with master Jamaican drummer Carl Wright. Their collective careers include collaborations with Peter Tosh, Bob Marley, Bunny Wailer, Lee 'Scratch' Perry, the Skatalites, and Toots and the Maytals.

A Frank Sinatra Candlelight Experience In Staten Island, NY - Saturday July 25th

Lumos brings its intimate candlelit concert format to St. Andrew's Church in Staten Island with a classical tribute to Frank Sinatra. A string trio reimagines favorites such as Strangers in the Night, Come Fly With Me, Theme from New York, New York, For Once in My Life, They All Laughed, The Way You Look Tonight, and Can't Help Falling in Love. Seating is first come, first served within your designated tier, ranging from Platinum to Bronze. The event welcomes guests ages eight and up. The venue is wheelchair accessible, although front row placement cannot be guaranteed. Four separate sittings are planned, and a different charity receives a donation each month.

Explore the edible landscape of Manhattan in Central Park with Robin Greenfield, who is spending a full year obtaining all of his food and medicine from the wild. As part of his nationwide outreach, he shares how to recognize the abundance growing in everyday spaces and how to build a more thoughtful relationship with the plants around us. Participants learn to identify more than ten common local species with culinary or medicinal uses, how to forage safely, how to harvest in ways that support plant health, and practical strategies that make getting started feel approachable. The pace is easy, with a short route under a half mile that stays close to the starting point, and the experience is designed for all levels of familiarity with foraging. The intention is for attendees to leave informed, encouraged, and connected to a supportive community. The walk meets in Central Park at Bethesda Fountain. A suggested donation of $10 to $40 supports the nonprofit Regeneration, Equity and Justice, and scholarships are available to keep the program accessible.

Serpentine Sibyls - A Floating Sculptural Installation by Daniel Rothbart

At Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Garden, a floating sculptural installation by Daniel Rothbart unfolds across The Pond and the Glasshouse. Inspired by the Sibyls, ancient women sought for guidance in difficult moments, the work reflects a world contending with floods, heat waves, and wildfires and considers the growing vulnerability of human life amid climate and ecological loss. The sculptures and forms call up long-ago sea life and plant structures, at once primeval and forward-looking, unfamiliar yet oddly recognizable. Grounded in deep time while peering toward an uncertain tomorrow, the project sits between remembrance and foresight. Set within Snug Harbor’s historic setting, once a refuge for sailors, it becomes a quiet place to reflect on where humanity has been and what may lie ahead. When the pieces drift, wind and water animate their movement. Variations of form, light, lift, and motion shift the way the surrounding landscape is perceived. The installation is free to visit during regular park hours, rain or shine.

Water Stewardship

Help care for Snug Harbor’s freshwater wetlands through a hands-on stewardship session at the Compost Demo Site. Volunteers clear trails, protect community access, and restore habitat health by identifying invasive plants and applying techniques to slow their growth or remove them, since these species can outcompete native vegetation, reduce wildlife food and shelter, and accelerate erosion along the shoreline. Activities are outdoors and physically demanding, and participants should expect to get dirty. Wear clothing that can handle soil and brush, and bring a water bottle. This event takes place regardless of weather conditions. Youth ages 14 and older are welcome. Children 13 and under must be accompanied by a caregiver who provides direct supervision. Admission is free. Registration is required, and walk-in participants are welcome. This program is supported by the New York City Council through A Greener NYC, a program of the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, with additional support from the Civic Impact Fund of NYC Service, a division of the Mayor’s Office.

A festive white-attire gathering in Riverside Park celebrates Tu B'Av, the Jewish holiday of love and romance. Inspired by the Talmudic tradition of wearing white and dancing in the fields so no one stands out, the evening focuses on connection and community among Jewish singles. The night brings together 1,000 singles for an outdoor summer experience with music from a DJ and room to mingle under the stars. Boathouse Bluegrass Jam

An open community jam at the Boathouse invites musicians and singers to bring an acoustic instrument or their voice and become part of a spontaneous one-night band. Hosted by the Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club to energize the shoreline and support live acoustic collaboration in Brooklyn, this inclusive gathering welcomes people of all ages and experience levels. It is free to attend, with a suggested donation of $5 to $10, and a limited selection of beverages is provided. Sessions take place rain or shine, usually outside the Boathouse, with a move indoors if it is cold or raining. Since 1999, the Dredgers have engaged the community in caring for the Gowanus Canal through advocacy, conservation, and education, promoting waterfront stewardship and raising awareness of sewer overflow issues in the area.

A nostalgic neighborhood celebration marks the 30th anniversary of BBG’s Greenest Block in Brooklyn contest. DJ Mamoudou plays ’90s tracks, and BrownstoneJAZZ from Brooklyn performs live. Sidewalk and lawn games, food and drinks, and exhibits highlighting Brooklyn’s greenest blocks and the people who champion them round out the experience. The garden will be open for free all day. Fresh, known for recreating drum machines and effects with only a microphone, made early waves with Slick Rick on The Show and La Di Da Di, tracks that helped define the genre. Funk Flex, a fixture of radio and club culture who has helped major New York artists and hits break out, continues to keep a close ear on hip-hop and R&B. Maker Park Radio celebrates nine years with an all ages outdoor music and art mini festival in Staten Island, NYC. Pets are welcome, and coolers are not permitted. The lineup features Fishbone from Los Angeles, a long running rock group that blends ska, punk, funk, metal, reggae, and soul. Pinkshift from Baltimore delivers high energy, socially conscious songs that pair pop punk hooks with elements of emo, grunge, post hardcore, and alternative rock. Philadelphia ska band Catbite has toured with Fishbone, RX Bandits, and PUP. Cat Crash presents a self described BubbleTeaGrunge sound that combines 90s riot grrrl, 2000s pop punk, and 2010s fifth wave emo, with roots spanning NYC, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, China, and India. Alongside the music, the festival includes sideshow performers from Coney Island, a walk in art gallery, a vendor market, and food and beverage vendors.

WHCO’s principal bassist, Milad Daniari, joins friends for a laid back afternoon of music at the historic Dyckman Farmhouse Museum. Admission is free and open to all. 14th Annual RVRR Bridge Run

An annual group run heads into New York City for a scenic route that takes in many of the city’s signature sights. It begins with an early morning ride on the Staten Island Ferry, then traces the southern end of Manhattan before crossing into Brooklyn via the Brooklyn Bridge. The route continues along the waterfront and returns to Manhattan across the Manhattan Bridge. The pace stays relaxed and social so participants can share the experience, pause for photos at scenic spots, and, if the group decides, enjoy treats like donuts or ice cream from a couple of favorite places. The outing blends the energy of Manhattan and Brooklyn streets, good company, and sweeping views, with plenty of laughs along the way. Safety is emphasized throughout, with everyone staying together, following traffic signals, and looking out for one another.

This production weaves haunting music with poetic narrative to explore Edgar Allan Poe’s turbulent journey, blending biography with imagination and the gothic spirit of his work. The company seeks six versatile actor-singers with strong movement and a playful, inventive approach to storytelling. This is an ensemble piece in which every performer is featured, with all roles except Poe covering multiple characters. Experience with verse is welcome but not required. Please prepare a musical theatre selection of about one minute that highlights storytelling; accompaniment will be provided. This is a Non-Equity opportunity with a $100 stipend, and performers of all ages, abilities, and ethnicities are encouraged to audition. Environmental and Tree Stewardship | REGISTRATION

At Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Garden, volunteers care for the 83-acre campus by tackling hands-on projects like collecting leaves, pulling weeds, removing invasive plants, and maintaining trails. Participants also learn practical ways to care for trees and steward large natural landscapes. Activities happen outdoors and involve physical work, so wear clothes you do not mind getting dirty and bring a water bottle. This event takes place rain or shine and is suitable for all ages and abilities. Admission is free with registration required. The meeting location is the Compost Demonstration Site. This program is supported by funding from the New York City Council through A Greener NYC, with thanks to the Staten Island City Council Delegation, and in part by the Civic Impact Fund initiative of NYC Service.

Vinyl Nights brings an open-air dance party to Bella Abzug Park in Hudson Yards, celebrating seven years of summertime gatherings on select Thursdays and Saturdays. DJs spin exclusively on vinyl with music that helped define New York club culture, spanning disco, funk and soul, house, boogie, Latin, and 80s and 90s hip hop.
