Pink Rock Culture Co-op, 201 E Jefferson St, Syracuse · verified Oct 11
    See details

A concert of exceptional acoustic guitar artistry features Italian-born virtuoso Peppino D’Agostino with special guest classical guitarist Ben Ellis. D’Agostino has spent more than three decades building an international career since moving to the United States, earning recognition from Guitar Player in 2017 as one of the 50 most transcendent acoustic guitarists. His album Every Step of the Way received a bronze People’s Choice honor from Acoustic Guitar for Best Acoustic Album of All Time, and his Seagull signature model was ranked among Guitar Player’s top ten signature guitars. He teaches worldwide through workshops and master classes, with compositions and methods published by Truefire, Alfred Publishing, Hal Leonard, and Acoustic Guitar Books. Together with his wife Donna, he founded Music World Retreats to host workshops alongside renowned instrumentalists and songwriters. His catalog spans 19 recordings and performances across more than 35 countries at major festivals and concert halls, with stage collaborations that include Larry Carlton, Eric Johnson, Tommy Emmanuel, Leo Kottke, Martin Taylor, Roland Dyens, and David Tanenbaum. His 2020 release Connexion arrived on A-Train Entertainment. Ellis brings a curator’s spirit to the classical guitar, designing programs that highlight surprising connections between contrasting works. Past pairings have ranged from transcriptions of violin music by Eugène Ysaÿe and J. S. Bach to Chet Atkins’s version of When You Wish Upon a Star set alongside a Walt Disney tribute by composer Darragh O’Neill. Recent recitals have taken place at WCNY Performance Space in Syracuse, the Orangeburg Fine Arts Center in South Carolina, the Niagara Classics Series in Ontario, and the Tenri Cultural Institute in Manhattan. With a focus on reaching new listeners, he has created events that blend music with visual art, wine, dance, or historical themes at venues such as the Smith Opera House in Geneva, the Barnes Mansion in Syracuse, and Shelter Studios in Manhattan. Additional projects include arranging rock and roll for classical guitar at the Principle Art Gallery in Charleston. He also teaches through the Westcott Music Collective and serves as president of the Great Lakes Guitar Society, a nonprofit dedicated to music education and performance opportunities. The performance takes place at Pink Rock Culture Co-op, an all-ages, substance-free hub for the performing arts and creative community. This downtown venue offers a 1,350-square-foot flexible space plus a 500-square-foot community room, encouraging collaboration, experimentation, learning, and support among artists. 13th annual Syracuse Acoustic Guitar Project Concert @ the Folkus Project

May Memorial Unitarian Universalist Society, 3800 E Genesee St, Syracuse · verified Oct 9
    See details

The Syracuse edition of The Acoustic Guitar Project marks its 13th year with a concert at May Memorial Unitarian Universalist Society in Syracuse. The lineup includes Isto and Edgar Pagán, with additional performers to be announced as they complete their original songs on the shared guitar. This global platform and concert series invites musicians to write and record a brand new song in a single week using the same instrument. Started in New York City, it now spans more than 50 cities worldwide, and Syracuse is proudly among them. Curated by Jeffrey Pepper Rodgers, the Syracuse project is one of the longest running. A total of 65 songs have already been created on the local guitar, donated by Maryland’s Minor Bird Instruments, and five more Central New York artists will add to the collection. The goal is to reconnect songwriters with the spark that first moved them to create, and the one-week constraint often leads to unexpected results that the concert brings to life. Support is provided by the Statewide Community Regrants Program of the New York State Council on the Arts, with backing from the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature, and administered by CNY Arts. Additional funding comes from the County of Onondaga’s Tier Three Project Support program, also administered by CNY Arts. The generosity of Folkus members helps make this project possible.
