    Wit & Whimsy

Newburgh · Mount Saint Mary College , 439 Liberty St

A spirited concert explores how composers play with the past, reshaping familiar ideas into something fresh. Stravinsky refashions vintage Italian melodies in the effervescent Pulcinella Suite. Shostakovich spins the American favorite Tea for Two into his Tahiti Trot, Op. 16. Anna Clyne’s Pivot leaps between contrasting sound worlds, and Khachaturian’s Galop from Masquerade charges ahead at full tilt. After an intermission, Decora, an artist from Newburgh, brings Outta My Own Way in an arrangement by Brigham Philips and Russell Ger. The finale is Beethoven’s Symphony No. 8 in F major, Op. 93, a compact work that nods to symphonic tradition while delighting in clever surprises. Together, these pieces celebrate the very human impulse to inherit, transform, and create anew.
