Explore the world of honey bees with a rare, up-close hive experience in NYC. Guided by an experienced beekeeper, the group opens an active hive and examines each frame to see how the colony is cared for and to spot highlights such as honeycomb, developing bees, and the queen. Participants may hold a frame filled with bees while the guide explains what is happening inside the hive and answers questions. Protective gear is provided, and, when available, there is a taste of fresh honey straight from the comb. Tours last about one hour and meet at Sky Farm by the Variety Boys and Girls Club of Queens in Long Island City. Signed waivers are required for all participants, and arriving 15 minutes early helps with getting to the roof and completing paperwork. The experience is weather dependent; if rain is expected or temperatures are below 65 F, notifications will be sent 24 to 48 hours in advance to reschedule or cancel.
