Power of Produce Club (POP Club) for Kids
The Power of Produce Club, or POP Club, is a kids program offered by the Saratoga Farmers’ Market and now entering its eighth season. This free, 12-week experience welcomes children ages 5 to 12 to explore fresh foods, healthy habits, and local agriculture through hands-on activities, games, crafts, tastings, and other educational learning. Each week brings new activities led by local farmers, educators, nonprofits, and community groups. Participants receive a $4 POP coin to spend on fruits and vegetables, and they can fill a POP Passport with stamps to earn prizes as the season goes on. Support for the program is provided by the Christopher Dailey Foundation.

Pricing is $25 per dog, with an additional $10 for difficult dogs and $15 for large dogs if extra handling techniques are needed, which is rare. The bus will stay until all dogs are finished. Presented by the Saratoga Springs History Museum, this summertime ghost tour invites visitors to trade bright skies for the hushed corridors of the historic Canfield Casino, where stories seem to linger in every room and along every quiet hallway. Once the glittering center of Saratoga’s Gilded Age society, the casino welcomed gamblers, socialites, politicians, and performers from near and far, and its opulent past is matched by tales of unexplained happenings that have drawn attention on television, including a feature by Ghost Hunters on the Travel Channel. Guided by museum storytellers, guests explore the building’s haunted spaces and hear accounts of apparitions, odd sounds, phantom footsteps, flickering lights, and poignant moments from Saratoga’s history. It is part history and part haunt, and it is suitable for curious visitors of all ages. The experience lasts about an hour and a half. Tickets are priced at $20 for adults, $15 for seniors, $10 for children ages 6 to 17, and free for children under 5.

The focus is on using art to express difficult emotions and to build trust by sharing onstage, supporting forward movement in recovery and helping participants connect with a healthy circle of friends. The host is Erin Harkes, a singer, songwriter, comedian, and publisher of Metroland Now who has been sober for 16 years. Signups are first come, first served, and sets are kept short. The kitchen will be open. A piano and several instruments, including guitars, will be available to use, and while there is no screen for photos, participants can perform with backing tracks. Admission is free thanks to support from the Victor and Helen Geisel Foundation.

Mostly Modern Festival’s FAB5, a string quartet with percussion, leads an interactive afternoon for children and families that explores connections between music, food, farming, and gardening. A troubadour from New York’s Hudson Valley, Tom Chapin has built a six decade career that spans 27 albums and three Grammys. Recognized both for contemporary folk and for trailblazing work in music for families, he is a seasoned recording artist, concert performer, storyteller and advocate. His creative life reaches beyond the stage, from a leading role in Pump Boys and Dinettes on Broadway to hosting National Geographic Explorer on television, contributing satirical songs to NPR’s Morning Edition, music direction in off Broadway productions and a film cameo in Jonathan Demme’s 2004 remake of The Manchurian Candidate. Raised in an arts centered family, he started out in the early 1960s singing with his brothers Harry and Steve as The Chapin Brothers in Greenwich Village, then began releasing solo records with Life Is Like That in 1976. During pandemic shutdowns he teamed with his daughters, The Chapin Sisters, for 200 livestreams titled Mornings with Papa Tom. He remains active as an advocate for the environment, efforts to end hunger and social justice, and for music and arts education in public schools. His latest release, Songs Of Hope, gathers uplifting pieces and features contributions from Abigail and Lily Chapin, John McCutcheon, longtime bandmates Michael Mark and Jon Cobert, and friends such as Eric Weisberg, Robin Batteau, Jay Ungar and Molly Mason, Jonathan Edwards and Larry Campbell. Critics at WFUV praised the record’s warmth and timeliness, and The New York Times has called him one of folk’s standout personalities.

Paint Collection Day at Saratoga Springs High School offers a free community drop off for many types of leftover architectural coatings, with donations appreciated. GreenSheen will collect and recycle interior and exterior paints including latex, acrylic, water based, alkyd, oil based, and enamel. They will also take deck coatings and floor paints including elastomeric varieties, primers, sealers, undercoaters, stains, as well as single component shellacs, varnishes, and urethanes. Waterproofing sealers and repellents for concrete, masonry, or wood are accepted as long as they are not tar or bitumen based. Metal coatings, rust preventatives, and field and lawn paints are also accepted. All containers must be intact, not leaking, and labeled by the original manufacturer, and empty containers are not allowed. Some items cannot be accepted. These include aerosols such as spray cans, paint thinners, mineral spirits, and other solvents. Auto or marine paint, art and craft paint, caulking compounds, epoxies, glues, and adhesives are not allowed. Paint additives, colorants, tints, and resins are also excluded, as are empty or leaking containers and any container without the original manufacturer label.
