Sacred Rest: A Yoga Nidra Experience

Set aside a restorative pause with a Yoga Nidra workshop centered on deep rest and self-connection. A gentle blend of mindful movement, accessible breathwork, and a guided Yoga Nidra journey helps settle the nervous system and invite ease throughout the body. The emphasis is on listening and softening rather than doing more, with unhurried space to integrate, relax, and simply be. No prior experience is needed and participants are welcome exactly as they are. Registration is $30 per person, or $27 for members on yearly or monthly plans. The session is led by Beth, a lifelong seeker whose first yoga class at age 19 was with Swami Sudhir Saraswati in Kathmandu, Nepal. Playful and breath centered, her teaching often includes storytelling, chant, and music, and she is recognized for fostering a safe, welcoming environment for exploration. She reminds students that showing up is often the hardest part and encourages doing your best, just as you are.

Jane Siberry

Jane Siberry, the boundary‑stretching Canadian singer-songwriter behind Calling All Angels, Love Is Everything, Mimi On The Beach, and The Crow’s evocative It Won’t Rain All the Time, appears at Caffè Lena in Saratoga Springs, NY for an intimate night in a listening-room setting. Throughout a singular career she has woven poetry, spirit, and human complexity into her music while rethinking how art is shared. After parting with a major label in 1996, she launched her own imprint, Sheeba, and invited fans into a trust based, pay what you can approach to downloads. She also reshaped live performance through salon-style concerts in living rooms and unexpected spaces across the globe, from farms in New Zealand to garages in Australia, kitchens in Finland, bell towers in rural England, and Japanese kominkas. Her newest project, Season One: In the Thicket Of Our Own Unconsciousness (THICKET), ends a decade of studio silence with songs interlaced by spoken and musical bridges she calls the matrix. Conceived like an episodic series, it explores flickering awareness, compassion, and rigorous self-examination, dwelling in the charged moments between things. Co-produced with Renée Cologne, the recording features longtime collaborators Rebecca Jenkins, Peter Kiesewalter, Ken Myhr, Rich Brown, Rebecca Campbell, David Ramsden, Marlon Saunders, Alyson Palmer, and Jacob Switzer. The performance centers on deep listening and connection, blending warmth, intensity, and trust to create a space where audiences can be fully present.

Yoga for Posture & Spinal Health

Discover practical ways to care for your spine and posture in a focused two hour workshop with Jael Polnac. Centered on the common concern of preventing height loss with age, the session highlights how spinal health supports height, brain function, flexibility, balance, and overall wellbeing. It opens with a guided conversation about protecting the spine over time, then transitions into a carefully sequenced practice that blends gentle yin poses for connective tissues, active strengthening to support spinal bones, and restorative work to soothe the nervous system and nourish softer tissues. The program flows through four parts—discussion, yin, active movement, and restorative practice—with clear guidance on the purpose and benefits of each pose so participants can continue these techniques with confidence. Suitable for all experience levels, it is designed for anyone who wants to maintain a healthy spine, improve posture, and move with greater ease and comfort. Registration is $50 per person. Tom Rush

Tom Rush charts six decades of American folk with distinctive guitar work, a warm expressive voice, and wry storytelling that turns a concert into a shared journey. The music shifts from laugh-out-loud moments to tender ballads and gritty blues, honoring the tradition he helped shape while pointing toward what comes next. Rising from the Boston coffeehouse scene of the early 1960s, he became a leading force in the folk revival. His early recordings introduced wider audiences to emerging songwriters such as Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, and Jackson Browne, helping usher in the singer-songwriter era. Artists including James Taylor and Garth Brooks have named him as a major influence. Signed to Elektra Records in 1965, he released a trio of influential albums that culminated in The Circle Game, a recording often credited with redirecting modern folk. He later explored folk rock in the 1970s, then returned reinvigorated, selling out Boston’s Symphony Hall and launching the Club 47 concerts that paired established names with rising voices like Nanci Griffith, Shawn Colvin, Alison Krauss, and Mark O’Connor. A master interpreter and accomplished songwriter, he has built a catalog that bridges genres and generations. The retrospective No Regrets traces that legacy, while later studio and live releases capture the humor, storytelling, and connection that define his shows. Today his voice is richer, his playing deeply expressive, and his performances blend tradition with a fresh perspective that keeps these songs vital for longtime listeners and newcomers alike.

Tommy Castro and the Painkillers

Tommy Castro and the Painkillers deliver a powerhouse blend of West Coast blues and rock led by the highly decorated guitarist, singer, and bandleader from California. For more than four decades Castro has built a reputation for soulful vocals, blazing guitar, and an energetic stage presence. Backed by a remarkably tight, hard-driving band with 17 albums to their name, the music spans brass-laced R&B, fiery soul, raw rock, and electric blues. Their latest Alligator Records release, Closer To The Bone, finds Castro returning to the foundation of his sound with a stripped-back, straight-ahead approach, produced by Christoffer “Kid” Andersen at Greaseland Studio in San Jose. The record pairs gritty originals such as Ain’t Worth The Heartache, Can’t Catch A Break, and Crazy Woman Blues with deep-cut readings of songs connected to friends and influences including Johnny Nitro, Magic Slim, Ron Thompson, and Chris Cain, and it features appearances from Rick Estrin, Billy Branch, Deanna Bogart, Chris Cain, Jim Pugh, and the Sons of the Soul Revivers. Castro’s roots run deep. Born in San Jose, he picked up the guitar at age ten, drew inspiration from artists like Elvin Bishop, Taj Mahal, and Mike Bloomfield, and absorbed everything from Ike and Tina Turner to John Lee Hooker and Buddy Guy, shaping an uplifting, soulful style grounded in blues, R&B, and funk. After early work with Bay Area groups such as NiteCry and the Dynatones, he launched the first Tommy Castro Band in 1992, served as the house band on NBC’s Comedy Showcase, and went on to tour steadily while releasing acclaimed albums for labels including Blind Pig, Telarc, 33rd Street, and Alligator. Highlights in the catalog include The Devil You Know, Stompin’ Ground, and A Bluesman Came To Town. Along the way he has earned 10 Blues Music Awards, including four honors as B.B. King Entertainer of the Year, and consistent recognition from fellow musicians such as Joe Bonamassa.

Charlie Ballentine

Guitarist and composer Charlie Ballantine brings a fluid, groove-centered approach that spans jazz, folk, rock, blues, and roots. Recognized by All About Jazz among the Top 200 Living Guitarists and named a Rising Star in the DownBeat Critics Poll, he is noted for intricate rhythms, exacting technique, and a voice where jazz, rock, and folk come together with ease. His original music, heard on albums such as Vonnegut and Cold Coffee, blends cinematic scope with emotional clarity. He also honors the tradition through interpretations of standards like My One and Only Love and East of the Sun, and through a double album devoted to the music of Thelonious Monk. A graduate of Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music, where he studied with David Baker, he quickly became a mainstay of the Midwest jazz scene. His project Life Is Brief: The Music of Bob Dylan earned international recognition and was selected by All About Jazz as one of the year’s top ten jazz albums for its fresh improvisational perspective on Dylan’s songs. As a bandleader he tours widely across the United States and Canada with appearances at the Detroit, Rochester, Winnipeg International, and Indianapolis jazz festivals, and he has collaborated with Rob Dixon, Emmett Cohen, and Amanda Gardier. Rooted in tradition yet guided by curiosity, his music rewards close listening and fits an intimate room. Roy Book Binder

For more than five decades, Roy Book Binder, known as The Book, has traveled the world championing the tradition of American blues. A natural storyteller and acclaimed fingerstyle guitarist, he has performed alongside Rev. Gary Davis, Pink Anderson, Bonnie Raitt, Hot Tuna, and JJ Cale. He released the first solo acoustic blues album to earn a five-star review from DownBeat Magazine. In the late 1980s he toured the East Coast with Bonnie Raitt and appeared on the Grand Ole Opry, which led to nearly 30 visits to Ralph Emery’s Nashville Now. His album The Good Book reached number 3 on AirPlayDirect’s Americana chart while Guy Clark held the top spot and Townes Van Zandt was number 2, and FolkDJ.org placed him among the top three artists for July. His work has been featured on a PBS special and on NPR’s Fresh Air with Terry Gross, and he regularly teaches at Jorma Kaukonen’s Fur Peace Ranch. A compelling performer, he left his Greenwich Village apartment in the early 1970s and spent 15 years living on a tour bus, traversing the United States and playing festivals across Canada and Europe. When that bus rolls into town, his concerts unfold like a one-man blues festival, blending deft fingerpicking, road stories, and songs that span generations. He has been appearing at Caffè Lena since 1968.

Harnessing the Gifts of Seasonal Reset with Ayurveda

This two hour Ayurveda workshop explores the practice of a seasonal reset, a gentle and restorative pause often timed with spring or fall to help clear accumulated ama and bring body and mind back into balance. Participants will learn how to simplify daily routines, choose warm and easy to digest meals such as kitchari, incorporate self care like abhyanga oil massage, and use supportive herbs to encourage strong digestion and steady energy. The session highlights benefits commonly associated with this ritual, including more comfortable digestion and metabolism, better sleep, brighter mood, and a more resilient immune system. By the end, attendees will be able to describe how seasonal cleansing can support well being, recognize the Ayurvedic qualities of spring and their potential impact on the doshas, and put at least three practical strategies into action, from a simple kitchari mono diet to home self massage and creating space in the schedule for rest and subtle processing. The workshop is led by Amy Eldredge, a Family Nurse Practitioner and Ayurveda Health Counselor who brings more than two decades of clinical experience in cardiology, gastroenterology, pain management, and primary care, blended with traditional Ayurvedic wisdom. Her approach centers on addressing root causes by aligning circadian rhythms, supporting gut health, and tailoring lifestyle choices for sustainable, balanced vitality rather than short term fixes. Drank the Gold and Benny Blue

Drank The Gold teams up with Benny Bleu and his band for a memorable evening at Caffè Lena, bringing original songs grounded in tradition, fresh takes on fiddle and banjo tunes, and folk harmonies that glow with clarity. The night begins with Drank The Gold, the duo of Oona Grady and James Gascoyne, blending fiddle, guitar, and banjo with dance tunes from North Atlantic traditions and time-honored folk songs. Recognized as Folk/Traditional Artist of the Year at the NY Capital Region Thomas Edison Music Awards, they draw on Irish and American old-time influences. Oona refined her playing in Cork, Ireland before returning to Ithaca, where she immersed herself in old-time and Cajun styles. James, raised near Louisville, Kentucky, grew up amid radio, records, church music, and live shows, shaping a sound that respects tradition while welcoming experimentation. Now based in Saratoga Springs, they continue to offer new perspectives on the music they love. Benny Bleu Haravitch, a Finger Lakes banjo player, singer-songwriter, and geologist, brings music that reflects connections to the natural world and to one another. He studied with Mac Benford, Richie Stearns, Judy Hyman, and Bruce Molsky, and his playing moves with a rhythmic pulse through regional tunes, songs picked up from growing up around a jug band, and thoughtful contemporary folk pieces. He appears with a dynamic group featuring guitarist and fiddler Gus Tritsch, who has previously shared the Caffè Lena stage with Jake Blount, drummer and fiddler Huck Tritsch, a Clifftop champion and jazz drumming student at Temple University, and bassist Eric Heveron-Smith, a versatile multi-instrumentalist and naturalist. Sound of Light: An Intimate Evening of Song & Resonance

Grammy-nominated composer and vocalist Radhika Vekaria offers an intimate program of sacred songs, mantras, and live acoustic textures at Downstreet Marketplace. In a close and welcoming setting, she blends Sanskrit chanting, original themes, and contemporary devotional sound into a guided musical journey that becomes a communal experience, friendly to first-time listeners and meaningful for longtime practitioners. Grounded in tradition while fully contemporary, the evening invites attentive listening, connection, and the shared power of voices in harmony. She will be accompanied by Angela Hassan. Vekaria is a cross-cultural concert artist whose practice draws on Vedic principles of precise mantra, disciplined recitation, breath, rhythm, and the internalization of vibration, allowing structure and free expression to meet. Her album Warriors of Light was considered for a Grammy in the Best New Age, Ambient and Chant category, reflecting a concept-driven approach that moves from spare vocal invocation to rich, immersive soundscapes. Equally at home at the piano or center stage, she weaves Sanskrit texts and philosophy through a refined contemporary lens that resonates across cultures. In collaboration with Gaja Yoga, she also offers mantra-centered teachings that encourage a deeper relationship with voice, vibration, and inner stillness. Joe Jencks

Joe Jencks brings the heart of folk music to life, pairing a resonant voice with songs that speak to community and conscience. Recognized by Pete Seeger for carrying folk traditions forward, he has performed internationally for more than 25 years as a songwriter whose work has earned awards and as a gifted storyteller. Rooted in Irish heritage and a working-class upbringing, his conservatory training meets contemporary craft to create narratives rich with heart, rhythm, and resolve. He has written several number one folk songs, including Lady of the Harbor, and co-founded Brother Sun, whose recordings reached the top of the Folk DJ charts. Appearances span festivals such as Falcon Ridge and Kerrville and stages that include Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. His latest recording, The Coming of the Years, draws on more than a decade of travels in Ireland and explores immigration, heritage, and belonging. Critics have praised the album’s beauty and thoughtfulness, noting how it honors tradition while renewing it. Beyond performing, Jencks has served as a cultural ambassador with the U.S. State Department, worked with the Library of Congress, and contributed harmony arrangements to dozens of projects. Above all, his sincerity invites listeners to reflect on shared humanity and carry the songs with them. At Caffè Lena, expect expressive vocals, powerful storytelling, and an intimate listening experience. Opening the evening is Artur Wachala, a Capital Region native born in Niskayuna. After studying jazz at Schenectady County Community College, UAlbany, and SUNY Purchase, he developed nuanced phrasing that shapes his music well beyond the jazz realm. Influenced by Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie, Brownie McGhee, and Dave Van Ronk, his performance blends story-driven songs with classic folk and blues roots. A familiar presence at Caffè Lena as a House Manager and a regular at its Open Mic, he first caught Jencks’s ear there, which led to the invitation to start the show. He continues a long Lena tradition of staff members who are also accomplished artists.

Expect blazing fiddles, rich harmonies, and storytelling that invites both laughter and chills. House of Hamill came together by chance when Rose Baldino of Burning Bridget Cleary teamed up with Brian Buchanan of Enter the Haggis at the 2014 Folk Alliance International conference, and a later travel snag brought bassist Caroline Browning into the mix to complete the trio. Based in Pennsylvania, they have become a festival favorite across the country, known for high-energy sets that fuse Celtic roots with modern folk drive. Their performances leap from original jigs and reels to tight three-part vocals, with road tales that keep the room smiling. Their songwriting and musicianship have earned wide attention. “Banks of the Brandywine” won the Grand Prize in the 2024 John Lennon Songwriting Contest, and their all-violin take on “Sweet Child O’ Mine” has reached more than 16 million views. The newest album, Wildfire, showcases thoughtful lyrics, intricate arrangements, and addictive hooks. It rose to number one on the FAI Folk Charts, “The Highwayman” secured the top song slot, and the band was named the number one Overall Artist in August 2024. The record ranked among the Top 10 most played on U.S. folk radio and brought the trio finalist honors for Group of the Year at the International Acoustic Music Awards. Onstage, the group thrives on connection, balancing instrumental fireworks with warmth and humor that fills the room from the first note. Listeners drawn to energetic folk and Celtic-inspired playing can look forward to a performance that resonates long after the encore.

Caffe Lena’s longstanding open mic welcomes performers to share their music on a stage recognized with Best Of honors from Metroland Magazine, The Alt Weekly, The Saratogian Reader’s Poll, and Saratoga’s Fab Five. All ages and styles are welcome, and original material is encouraged but not required. Performance order follows the sign-up list, and each participant gets a short slot for up to two songs. A Yamaha studio upright acoustic piano and an acoustic Martin guitar are available, MP3 backing tracks can be played through the sound system, and amps and drums are permitted as long as setup and breakdown fit within your slot. The listening room keeps attention on the stage for every performer. A contribution of three to five dollars supports the nonprofit. Table service is available, and there is no alcohol to help keep the event family friendly. Hosting rotates among Rick Bolton, Carolyn Shapiro, Ray Pashoukos, and Kate Blain. Community standards apply, and the host may step in to maintain a welcoming environment by limiting excessive profanity, explicit sexual content, or jokes that single out a group.

Sponge: 30th Anniversary Tour

Sponge marks three decades of Detroit rock on its 30th Anniversary Tour, joined by special guest Ginger Geezus. The band broke out with the Sony debut Rotting Piñata, powered by the singles "Plowed" and "Molly (16 Candles)" that received nationwide radio play and heavy rotation on MTV. Both songs reached number 5 on Billboard’s Modern Rock chart, pushing the album to Gold and then Platinum. The Columbia follow up, Wax Ecstatic, delivered additional Top 10 Billboard tracks, including the title song and "Have You Seen Mary?" Their music has been featured in the films The Craft, Chasing Amy, Mallrats, and Empire Records, and the group appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman and the Conan O’Brien show. Later releases New Pop Sunday, For All The Drugs in The World, The Man, Galore Galore, and Destroy the Boy showcase a sound rooted in 70s glam and Motor City influences such as The Stooges, the MC5, and Motown, while retaining its own distinct identity.

Duke Robillard Band

Duke Robillard takes the stage at Caffè Lena with his band, bringing a lifetime in American roots music. Equally at home in blues, jump R&B, swing, and the spark of early rock and roll, he blends tradition with a personal touch that is both precise and fluid. A co-founder of Roomful of Blues in 1967, he helped renew interest in jump blues and horn-driven rhythm and blues. He later stepped into the guitar role with The Fabulous Thunderbirds after Jimmie Vaughan and has performed and recorded with artists including Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Ruth Brown, John Hammond, and Maria Muldaur. His solo catalog has earned multiple Blues Music Awards and Grammy nominations, moving with ease from Chicago blues to swing-era jazz while keeping feel and phrasing at the center. Often called a guitarist’s guitarist, Robillard pairs technique with taste. Expect crisp guitar lines, strong rhythm, and a set that draws widely from American music while staying rooted in the blues. B.B. King praised him as one of the great players.

Nordlys Global Voices Series: Amanda Pascali

Part of the Nordlys Global Voices Series, this program spotlights Amanda Pascali, a songwriter shaped by a life that bridges Egypt, France, Italy, and Romania. Raised among multiple languages and histories, she channels that movement between cultures into songs that are intimate and direct, drawing on a wide range of musical influences. Her artistry is closely connected to Southern Italian folk, especially the repertoire of Sicilian singer Rosa Balistreri. Through her To Sing and Recount (Canta e Cunta) project, she has translated and reimagined these songs so their stories speak to the present while preserving the character of the originals. Her album Roses and Basil brings together these renewed folk pieces with her own writing, blending folk, Mediterranean colors, and contemporary songwriting with a clear focus on narrative and voice. Pascali has performed internationally as a Fulbright Scholar, appeared at the World Expo in Osaka, and served as an artist in residence at the Library of Congress. Her interpretations of traditional music have also reached wide audiences online. The program explores how time honored songs can evolve and find fresh meaning through an artist who approaches them with care and curiosity. Support is provided by The Nordlys Foundation. She has been praised by Guitar Thrills for her poetic power and luminous voice.

The Seldom Scene

For over half a century, The Seldom Scene has influenced the direction of modern bluegrass. Beginning in 1971, the group earned its name by blending bedrock bluegrass with a wide-ranging repertoire, giving songs from beyond the tradition the same careful attention as the classics. That spirit, once uncommon, helped pave the way for the broad mix of influences heard in the music today. The current lineup features Lou Reid on guitar and mandolin, Ronnie Simpkins on bass, Ron Stewart on banjo and fiddle, Fred Travers on dobro, and Clay Hess on guitar. Their sound is grounded and precise, built on thoughtful arrangements, clear vocals, and the easy musical conversation that comes from years of playing together. Across the decades they have remained a steady presence, folding classic country, folk, and original material into bluegrass while keeping its heart intact.
