Brian Gerald Bulger

Brian Gerald Bulger, a Kansas City singer-songwriter, brings confessional, Americana-leaning folk shaped by stories of love, grief, faith, loss, and healing. His warm voice and unguarded writing invite close listening, with songs that feel road-worn and true. He steps into a new chapter with an EP and companion memoir, Thank God I’m Far From Heaven, a layered project tracing trauma, doubt, resilience, and renewal. Co-produced with Grady Philip Drugg and Ephriam McFarland, the recordings pair intimate songwriting with acoustic guitar, piano, and rich harmonies that rise and settle into a bittersweet glow. The single 2007 Ice Storm reflects a pivotal emotional snapshot that has informed both the person and the music. The memoir gathers poems and stories about losing siblings, leaving religion, and finding steadiness after upheaval. With a renewed focus on the written word guiding the performance, the night centers on storytelling, vulnerability, and the hope that these songs can offer comfort to anyone carrying grief.

It Takes a Village: Birth Planning & Advocacy for Black Families

A community gathering at Garden Oaks Community Center recognizes Black Maternal Health Week with practical guidance on building a strong birth team. In Oklahoma, Black women face the highest maternal mortality in the state, roughly 71.6 deaths per 100,000 births, and babies born to Black mothers experience an infant mortality rate about 1.7 times the state average. These figures point to the importance of education, support, and coordinated care. This event is designed for those considering pregnancy, currently expecting, or recently postpartum, along with partners and other support people. Participants will hear brief perspectives from professionals who serve maternal and infant health, then move into small breakout sessions to learn about the different roles within a birth team and ask questions. The aim is to connect families with information, resources, and relationships that support healthier pregnancies, births, and postpartum experiences. Breakfast will be provided. Presented by Imani’s Village and the Oklahoma City Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

Stern Army Pokémon Launch Party Tournament @ Cacnea Jack's

A Stern Army Pokémon launch party tournament brings competitive pinball with a fun twist. Entry is a $1 IFPA fee plus coin drop for games. Qualifying uses Max Matchplay in head-to-head format, with each player completing 12 games on randomly selected machines from the arena pool. At the start, every player receives a card showing a Pokémon type such as Fire, Water, Grass, or Fighting along with the types it is strong against. Some machines in the pool also carry a type. If a player is placed on a machine they are strong against and wins, that machine is captured. A captured game can be thrown out to remove it from the pool for the rest of the tournament, or kept and summoned once to replace any assigned game. Qualifying is expected to run about three hours. All ties are settled on Pokémon. For ties involving two to four players, the tiebreaker is group matchplay. For larger ties, scores on Pokémon determine who advances, with the lowest scores eliminated. Finals are single elimination in three divisions. The top four qualifiers enter A Division, the next four enter B, and the next four enter C. The total number advancing may be adjusted before play begins to maximize participation while meeting IFPA rules, and the final count will be announced prior to the start. Each division plays head-to-head, best two out of three. In the first round, each player selects a game, and the higher seed may choose a third game if needed. A captured game can be used to counter an opponent’s pick. The championship round in each division is a best of three played only on Pokémon, and captured games cannot be used there. Finals are expected to take about two hours. Prizes include a Pokémon Pinball Translite and a grand champion plaque for the A Division winner. The A Division runner up and the top two finishers in both B and C Divisions receive Pokémon themed prizes.

Cosplay in the Park

At Will Rogers Gardens, this semi-annual cosplay meetup brings cosplayers and photographers together in an easygoing outdoor setting to network, mingle, and connect. Participants can showcase recent costumes, meet others in the community, and practice photography in a casual, creative atmosphere. Photographers can work at their own pace. Tips are appreciated but not required. Finished photos will be shared with the Oklahoma Cosplayers group when they are ready, so patience is appreciated. Everyone is asked to care for the park by being mindful of the surroundings and cleaning up after themselves so the space remains available without added restrictions. Aspiring photographers will find a lively environment for building skills. With more cosplayers than photographers, it is acceptable to ask for a photo, though not every request can be fulfilled. Regular practice supports a calm mind and spirit, can enhance creativity, learning, and athletic performance, and encourages overall wellness and longevity. Advanced training may lead to experiences sometimes described as kundalini rising. The cost is pay what you can. Instruction is provided by Grayson Trice, whose journey began in Japanese martial traditions and expanded into internal martial arts and healing arts under the guidance of Glenn J. Morris, Ph.D. and Sci.D. His background includes training in Judo and Sambo with a national Sambo championship, study of Shing Yi, Ling Kong Jing, and Reiki, and black belts in Sambo at master sport, Kyushin Ryu at shodan, and Hoshin Roshi Ryu Jutaijutsu at nidan. Recognized by Dr. Morris as a Hoshin Tao Chi Kung instructor and entrusted to lead a Hoshin dojo, he later served as chaplain of the Hoshin Roshi Ryu and established the Hoshin Hermetic Society at his teacher’s request. An initiate of the Western Hermetic tradition and a member of two Western magical orders, he now leads the Dojo of the Sun & Moon with a focus on the healing arts, offering in-person and online instruction in Hoshin Tao Chi Kung, energy healing, meditation, Western esoterics, and related disciplines. His aim is to preserve the healing lineage he received and make transformative practices accessible regardless of personal circumstances.

Praised by outlets such as Rolling Stone, Billboard, and The New York Times, and featured on the NPR program All Things Considered, she was championed early by Judy Collins, who signed her to her label and recorded her work. Speace earned the AMA UK International Song of the Year, and her album The American Dream climbed to the top of the Folk Alliance International Radio Charts, with its title track also reaching number one. Her tenth release, The Blue Rock Session, gathers 11 solo acoustic performances captured in a single three hour studio session during a writers retreat in Wimberley, Texas, including a solo rendition of The Sea and the Shore and her own version of The Weight of the World, a song recorded by Judy Collins. That record also reached number one on the FAI Radio Chart. She has appeared at major festivals including Rocky Mountain Folks Festival, Philadelphia Folk Festival, and Glastonbury, and on renowned stages like the Grand Ole Opry and the Ryman Auditorium. Beyond the stage, her essays have appeared in The New York Times, No Depression, Working Mother Magazine, and Salon, and she leads workshops in songwriting and performance.
