This opening reception highlights a retrospective devoted to Carrie Wissler-Thomas, an artist, writer, and longtime arts leader whose career spans more than fifty years. Educated at Hood College and Temple University, she developed a lyrical visual language first examined in a college honors paper on Minoan art, a thread that runs through more than 800 paintings. The presentation brings together expressionistic oil works distinguished by flowing, wave-like lines that animate both landscapes and figures. Travel impressions from Scotland, France, and Spain appear alongside views of the Susquehanna River, while figurative pieces reflect studies with the respected artist and curator “Li” Hidley. With more than 35 solo shows, many group exhibitions, and works in private collections in the United States and Britain, her influence is widely felt. The reception celebrates her creative legacy and her longstanding leadership with the Art Association of Harrisburg.

The Abbey Bar hosts an evening devoted to the craft of song, presented in a round-style setting where four performers take turns, trade stories, and collaborate in real time. Taking the stage are Sarah Fiore, Vincent Yarnell, Tanner Bingaman, and Virginia Masland. Sarah Fiore is an award-winning singer, songwriter, instrumentalist, and producer from Dover, Pennsylvania, honored by the Central PA Music Hall of Fame as Best Songwriter in 2023 and Best Female Artist in 2022 and 2023. Her tenth album, I Don't, adds to a body of work that also includes leading the folk and roots group Big Sky Quartet. Vincent Yarnell is a Pennsylvania-based songwriter whose stripped-back approach bridges folk intimacy and indie experimentation. He is a longtime figure in the Central Pennsylvania scene, formerly with the band Rivers, and was named Best Folk Artist at the 2022 Central Pennsylvania Music Awards. Tanner Bingaman is a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer, poet, and visual artist steeped in Appalachian influences. His résumé includes extensive performances across the U.S. and Canada, features on NPR stations, residencies at the Avaloch Farm Music Institute with an upcoming term at The Volland Foundation, and recognition for his project Pretty Big Garden as Best Americana Artist from the Central Pennsylvania Music Hall of Fame. His second album, Jubilee, is slated for release through Heady Wax and independent record shops. Virginia Masland, originally from Cumberland County and now based in Nashville, is a folk singer and multi-instrumentalist whose work blends reimagined traditionals with originals that reflect on self-reliance, love, loss, and caring for the natural world. Her debut EP, The Very Day I'm Gone, sets grounded vocals against spacious guitars, fiddle, and pedal steel for a reflective sound. Advance tickets are $15 and the day-of price is $20. All ages are welcome, and attendees under 21 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who is at least 25.

The City of Harrisburg presents the 110th annual Kipona Festival at Riverfront Park, a three day celebration filled with entertainment and community spirit. One evening will wrap up with a fireworks show. To make arrival easier, parking is available on City Island for $5, and the train station is a short three block walk from the festival area. A free ADA accessible shuttle operates in a continuous loop between City Island and the riverfront festival throughout each day. Some nearby roads will have temporary closures during the event, so plan for possible detours.
