At Appell Center for the Performing Arts, York-based band Public Disco Porch offers a winter gathering shaped for the longest nights of the year, more communal rite than conventional holiday show. Drawing on centuries-old carols, folk hymns, lullabies and seasonal songs from Europe and Appalachia, the evening weaves voices, strings and hand percussion in the gentle glow of candles. The repertoire is sung in English, Gaelic, Latin and Pennsylvania Dutch, carried from a time before streaming and even before electric light, when winter was weathered side by side. There are no flashy lights, no spectacle, no sermon. The focus is on sound, story and shared stillness. Their new album, Nocturns, looks toward the quiet fields and short days of the season, finding the strange beauty that appears when the cold reminds people how much they need one another. These are songs for hearths and village squares, for shared tables, for drawing close while the windows darken. Expect layered harmonies, old-world textures, bowed strings, hand-rhythm and melodies that have lasted for centuries because they speak to something essential. Some pieces lift the spirit, some carry sorrow, some feel as if they belong to dreams and memory at once. At its core, Nocturns honors warmth in the midst of winter, not by denying the night, but by choosing to light a fire anyway. For one evening, the town feels like a common hearth.

Yoga mats, cushions, bolsters, and blankets are provided, and you are welcome to bring your own. Chairs are available for those who prefer to sit. Consider bringing a journal to capture reflections and a closed-top water bottle.
