Presentation on Duffy’s Cut

At Tellus 360, Dr William Watson will lead a discussion on recent work at Northwood in Downingtown that points to a second mass grave of Irish railroad workers connected to the Duffy’s Cut story. The topic relates to Duffy’s Cut, where fifty-seven Irish immigrants died of cholera in 1832 soon after arriving in the United States while working for a contractor named Duffy on the Philadelphia and Columbia Railroad. Bias against Irish Catholics resulted in care being withheld, and the tragedy underscores the dangers many immigrant industrial laborers faced in the 19th century.

The Revolution and Mennonites: A Crisis of Conscience

Historic Rock Ford’s Untold Stories of the Revolution Lecture Series features Ken Sensenig with a look at how Mennonite pacifists struggled with matters of conscience amid the upheaval of 1777. The talk focuses on John and Anna Baer at the peaceful Ephrata Cloister, which received wounded soldiers for care as Philadelphia was being defended. The Baers wrestled with how to tend the injured even as the conflict challenged their deepest beliefs. Their family’s experience includes community tensions and their son’s involvement in horse trading with the British, while they continued to show compassion despite suspicion. They later died of typhus contracted while nursing, and their graves were forgotten for more than a century until a local farmer made a chance discovery in 1980. The program takes place in the Langmuir Education Room on the first floor of the Rock Ford Barn. Admission applies to the lecture only and excludes the Snyder Gallery and Hand Mansion. Admission is $5 for Rock Ford Members and $10 for Non-Members. Presenter Ken Sensenig has spent a career in education, including extensive work with Mennonite Central Committee. His perspective reflects years in Africa and teaching in area schools. He is strongly engaged with local history, sharing it in nearby retirement communities, and he devotes part of his early retirement to storytelling and projects on a farm near Akron, Pennsylvania.

Each sibling strives to appear the ideal Hastings, but a wayward house pet, a tray of macarons, and a very public masquerade ball threaten to uncover everyone's secrets. They must decide whether to keep up the facade or be honest with each other. Part comedy of manners and part comedy of errors, it explores family, appearances, and the unrealistic expectations people place on themselves in their quest for perfection. Presented at The Junction Center. Free ticket information is forthcoming, and all shows are by donation.

What Were They Wearing?

Historic Rock Ford’s Fashion Lecture Series features Robert S. DuPlessis with an exploration of what people in Lancaster and nearby communities wore during the Revolutionary era. Starting from Lancaster’s settlement in the 1720s and its rise by 1760 as the largest inland town in British North America, the talk examines how trade in furs and skins supplied by Native Americans, along with agricultural and metal goods produced by settlers, shaped daily material life in the borough and its rural surroundings. It considers how residents engaged with the consumer revolution that spread through northwestern Europe and the North American colonies, whether the shifts in material culture seen in Philadelphia, with which Lancaster had close economic ties, influenced this region, or if a distinctly inland or frontier character took hold. The program takes place in the Langmuir Education Room on the first floor of the Rock Ford Barn, with parking available behind the Barn. Before the lecture, visitors may explore the Snyder Gallery and the 2026 Focus Exhibit. Admission is $10, with a $5 rate for Rock Ford members.

Historic Rock Ford’s America250 Lecture Series features a talk that considers the Declaration of Independence as breaking news in 1776, before its legacy was known. Historian Emily Sneff explores how the document reached people across the new nation and the wider Atlantic world, highlighting the printers, soldiers, diplomats, and translators who helped communicate the message of independence. The program takes place in the Langmuir Education Room on the first floor of the Rock Ford Barn. Attendees may also visit the Snyder Gallery and the 2026 Focus Exhibit prior to the lecture. Sneff is a historian of early America with a Ph.D. from William & Mary and serves as a consulting curator for exhibitions marking the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

Alpaca Summer Camp 2026

A hands-on summer experience at Graystone Ridge Alpacas invites ages 9 to 17 to learn the daily care and gentle handling of these remarkable animals. Campers are paired with an alpaca to work with throughout the week, spend time with other friendly farm animals like chickens and goats, and discover the qualities of alpaca fiber while creating take-home projects. The schedule runs three hours per day, rain or shine, and includes games, walks, and plenty of photo moments. Sneakers or boots are required, and staff are vaccinated and hold Pennsylvania Child Abuse clearances. Campers must be 9 years old before camp begins, with no exceptions. The beginner option welcomes newcomers with feeding and grooming basics, an introduction to alpaca personalities, and approachable fiber crafts. The advanced option builds on prior experience with a playful alien theme, featuring creative fiber work, themed activities, caring for and training an assigned alpaca, and daily walks. Completion of the beginner camp is required before enrolling in the advanced session. Multiple sessions are offered, and space is limited. Tuition is $190 per camper. Registration is handled directly by email, not through online forms or social media. Once registered, a check must be mailed within two weeks to secure the spot or it may be released, and alternate arrangements can be discussed if needed. Payment is accepted by mailed check to Graystone Ridge Alpacas or by Venmo. All sessions are paid in advance. Missed days by individual campers are forfeited, days missed due to extreme weather are not refunded, and refunds are issued only if a suitable replacement camper fills the spot. For availability, registration, or questions about fit or special needs, email graystoneridge@yahoo.com. For questions, call 717-449-6884.

Michael Daves & Jacob Jolliff

At West Art, upstairs in The Sanctuary, guitar and mandolin duo Michael Daves and Jacob Jolliff present a bluegrass program that honors Jim and Jesse and the Virginia Boys. Known for crystalline harmonies, fearless improvisation, and seamless back-and-forth, they revisit classics through their collaborative release We Like Jim & Jesse!, blending reverence for tradition with a contemporary spark. The album was captured without overdubs in a historic Brooklyn church hall to preserve the feel of two musicians gathered around a single microphone. Daves brings deep experience in the guitar-mandolin format, including a GRAMMY-nominated duo project with Chris Thile, while Jolliff’s mandolin work draws on Jesse McReynolds’ influential approach alongside his own distinctive voice. The pair has performed together in a variety of settings and tours as a duo across the United States, Canada, and Europe and the UK. Tickets are $26 for general admission, $22 for SFMS members, and $10 for students.
