    Haunted Halloween Concert

Gettysburg · United Lutheran Seminary, 147 Seminary Rdg

    Free

Music, Gettysburg! presents a free Haunted Halloween Concert at United Lutheran Seminary featuring internationally acclaimed organist Peggy Haas Howell. The evening blends mystery, drama, and spectacular organ music in a program of classical masterworks, film favorites, and vivid narration. Ms. Howell is joined by narrator Mark Oldenburg, baritone Latham Gunn of The Gettysburg Choral Society, and singers from the Gettysburg Children's Choir. The centerpiece is The Legend of Sleepy Hollow for organ and narrator by Canadian composer Rachel Laurin, composed in 2021. Each character in Washington Irving’s tale carries a distinct musical theme voiced on specific organ colors, and the combination of narration and organ demonstration brings the adventures of Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman to life. Additional highlights include J. S. Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, an excerpt from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera, John Williams’ mischievous Double Trouble from a Harry Potter film, Louis Vierne’s eerie Gargouilles et chimères, and Henri Mulet’s virtuosic Tu es petra et portae inferi non praevalebunt adversus te, showing the organ’s span from hushed suspense to commanding power. Both the concert and a free public workshop will showcase the Andover Organ, Opus 84, in the Church of the Abiding Presence, an instrument built in the northern European tracker tradition with 31 stops and 38 ranks of pipes. The workshop, sponsored by the Harrisburg Chapter of the American Guild of Organists and led by Ms. Howell, focuses on historically informed performance of 17th and 18th century Dutch and German repertoire with demonstrations and a master class. Peggy Haas Howell has performed widely across the United States and Europe, earning top honors in the American Guild of Organists National Young Artists Organ Playing Competition and the St. Albans International Organ Interpretation Competition. She serves as Organist and Choirmaster at St. John’s Episcopal Church and Director of Cantate Children’s and Youth Choir in Lynchburg, Virginia, and is National Vice President of the American Guild of Organists. Her training includes degrees from Susquehanna University and Union Theological Seminary in New York City, with additional study in Hamburg, Germany. Admission is free, and a freewill offering will be received.

Fundraiser Concert for Chef Mama Saray

Baltimore · Zen West, 5916 York Rd

A benefit concert at Zen West in Baltimore supports Chef Mama Saray, affectionately known as Baltimore’s Food Queen for decades of serving homebound and hungry neighbors through her nonprofit, Prime Time for Unity, and for preparing meals at hundreds of local events and fundraisers. After relocating to Jamaica to care for her husband Ical, their property was heavily damaged by Hurricane Melissa, and he passed away in December 2025. Returning to Baltimore, she raised funds and used her savings to open A Taste of International, but the health department closed it due to the landlord’s unresolved building violations, not because of anything she did. This night of music, food, and community is dedicated to helping her start again, with performances by Voltamatic, The Gayle Harrod Band, and DJ Dubble8. Tickets are $18 in advance with no fees or $20 at the door. A GoFundMe campaign is also available for those wishing to contribute.
