As part of this series, the B&O No. 147 "Thatcher Perkins" is opened in recognition of Veteran’s Day, providing a close look at a notable ten wheel locomotive introduced in 1863. Designed by Thatcher Perkins, the railroad’s Master of Machinery, this engine was among eleven powerful ten wheelers built to move heavy passenger trains across the steep Allegheny terrain. It began service on military duty for the Union Army, carrying troops and supplies through the Potomac River Valley from 1863 to 1865. In the decades after the Civil War it worked on both passenger and freight trains. Retired in the early 1890s, the locomotive went on to be showcased at major public events, including the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair and the 1927 Fair of the Iron Horse. The series also offers interior access to other collection highlights, including the newly restored B&O No. 3316 "Washington" Observation Tavern Car, and American Freedom Train No. 1 will be opened twice. Members receive free admission for each collection piece.
