Introduction to Flower Essences with Rissa Miller

Explore the gentle world of flower essences in an introductory workshop with Rissa Miller. Drawing on the Bach tradition established by Dr. Edward Bach, this session examines how vibrational plant remedies can support emotional, mental, and energetic balance. The class explains what flower essences are and are not, how they differ from herbal preparations, and how they are used for emotional support, spiritual connection, and personal growth. Participants learn to choose essences for their own needs, weave them into daily rituals, and recognize their energetic signatures. A hands-on segment walks through making an essence and includes guidance on dosage, safety, and practical application. Everyone leaves with an essence they created and greater confidence to begin using these remedies at home. Space is limited to 10 participants.

Alasdair Fraser and more

Scottish fiddle virtuoso Alasdair Fraser and cellist Natalie Haas return to the SFMS concert series at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of York. Their music fuses deep roots in Scottish tradition with adventurous string interplay, balancing the intimacy of chamber performance with the drive of dance, with the cello beating at the rhythmic core. Their onstage connection, precision, and spontaneity have earned acclaim from audiences around the world. Fraser’s career spans more than three decades, including awards, broadcast credits, and appearances on major film soundtracks such as Last of the Mohicans and Titanic. He was inducted into the Scottish Traditional Music Hall of Fame in 2011. Haas, a Juilliard graduate, is in high demand across the traditional scene and has collaborated with artists including Mark O’Connor, Natalie MacMaster, Solas, Altan, Liz Carroll, Dirk Powell, Brittany Haas, Darol Anger, Jeremy Kittel, Hanneke Cassel, and Laura Cortese. Their debut album, Fire & Grace, received the Scots Trad Music Album of the Year, and they have since released five more widely praised recordings. Both artists also inspire new generations of players through their teaching at fiddle camps worldwide. An open Irish session is planned before the concert, weather permitting, outdoors at the venue. Listeners are welcome. Musicians should bring a chair, and if it rains the session will move to the church lobby with limited space. Once doors open, session musicians can check in and save a seat for the concert. The session is led by hammered dulcimer player and SFMS board member Mary-Grace Autumn Lee. Session musicians are eligible for the SFMS member ticket discount and are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance. Ticket prices: $32 general admission, $27 for SFMS members, session musicians, and UUCY members, and $10 for students.

Crochet Basics 6-Part Series EVENING

Learn crochet from the ground up in a six-part series created for complete beginners. You will practice on a set of coasters that grow in complexity and techniques, then cap the journey by making a hat as the final project. Topics include three or four essential stitches, how to read and start a pattern, yarn basics, changing yarn, binding off, neat finishing methods, and understanding gauge so projects fit as intended. Enrollment is limited to four students to allow plenty of individual guidance. The curriculum was developed by an instructional designer and crocheter to give newcomers a clear, supportive path. Each session comes with a handout that includes the pattern used that day, suggestions for additional practice, and links to video playlists so you can review at home. The atmosphere is low pressure and encouraging, focused on steady skill-building. Plan on weekly homework of about one to two hours to reinforce what you learn. If that practice time is not realistic right now, consider waiting until you can commit. Bring your own supplies or purchase a materials kit for $10 at the first session. Additional items will be needed for the hat. No prior experience is required. An optional fifth meeting offers a gauge check and a make-together, followed by a two week break to work on the hat before the final session. Instruction is led by Rachel Melnyk.

Kids Safety Hike

Celebrate Hiking and Trail Safety Day with a family friendly kids safety hike at William H Kain Park. The South Central Search and Rescue team will start things off at the pavilion with a talk and hands on demonstrations, then the group will head to the restrooms before beginning the walk from the docks by the kayak rental house. The hike will move at a child led pace and will likely run a bit over an hour, with plenty of room for curiosity and exploring along the way. Plan to come prepared with the basics for a safe outing. Helpful items include navigation tools like a map, GPS, or compass; a headlamp or flashlight with spare batteries; sun protection such as sunglasses, sunscreen, and a hat; a first aid kit that covers insect repellent and children’s medications; a small knife or multi tool; simple fire starting supplies; and a lightweight emergency shelter like a tarp or thermal blanket. Pack extra food and water, and consider purification tablets or a filter. Extra layers are recommended, including a warm hat, light long sleeves to limit brush contact, and pants with cuffs to help reduce tick exposure. A small trash bag is a great bonus so everything you bring in can be carried out. Giving kids their own small backpack and water bottle can add to the fun. Children over four can often carry about 5 to 15 percent of their body weight, but be sure to account for the weight of water and the pack itself. Younger children can wear an empty pack just to get used to it. Extras for after the hike are smart too, like spare clothes, snacks, and water for the ride home. A travel potty, clean socks, towels, and wet wipes make cleanup easy. If there is any chance you might need to carry a tired hiker, bring a backup child carrier and remember that the distance out is also the distance you may need to carry them back. Safety expectations on the trail will be reviewed with kids. They should only eat food provided by their adults, stay on the path and within sight, and stop at every junction. Moving slowly and carefully is important whenever it is steep, rocky, downhill, or wet. Children should keep to the side of the trail away from edges, avoid running or jumping near ledges or on rocky sections, and try to keep shoes and clothing dry to prevent getting chilled. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to think ahead, carry a solid first aid kit, and know basic first aid skills. An emergency locator beacon is worth considering. Know your group’s abilities, be ready to turn around if needed, and hike with others when possible. Pause at trail intersections to orient, look at maps together, and involve kids in route finding so it becomes a habit. Point out hazardous plants and explain why they should be avoided. Keep in mind that higher elevations can feel cooler and the air may be thinner. A simple takeaway from the training highlights what to do if a child becomes separated, including the importance of staying in one place. This outing takes place on the William Kain Trail Loop 3. Plan to meet first at the pavilion near the trailhead and parking area before heading out.

Tatted Lace: Flowers (Beginner-friendly!)

Discover tatting, a shuttle-based lace technique with roots in the 1800s, in a beginner friendly two-part class. Part 1 concentrates on forming double stitches, and Part 2 applies those skills to create spring flower motifs. Participants learn how to load a shuttle, choose thread, make double stitches, form rings and chains, create picots, and join elements using picots. Expect to practice between sessions since tatting projects can take time, and plan to begin or finish a flower by the end while receiving ideas for expanding the design into cards, doilies, jewelry, and other projects. No prior experience is needed, and the class is intended for adults and teens 14 and up. All supplies are included, with a Boye tatting shuttle, eight thread sample colors, a small organza bag, and shared classroom tools provided. Taught by Kyle Peterson. A minimum of three students is required, and if the class is canceled due to low enrollment, payment will be refunded to the original method. Hosted at Fabric of Society York, a creative community space offering handicraft and arts classes, events, and studio space.

Restorative Cupping Yoga

Experience a restorative yoga session that integrates cupping therapy, presented by Kara Lovehart. Cupping uses gentle suction to lift the skin and fascia, which can promote circulation, ease tension, and support detoxification. Paired with restorative yoga, this approach is designed to encourage fascia release, support energy flow, and invite deep relaxation for both body and mind. Many participants seek benefits such as improved mobility through deep fascial release, reduced muscle and joint tension, lymphatic support and detoxification, increased energy flow and meridian activation, and a greater sense of calm and stress relief. The class runs for 90 minutes and moves through three phases. It begins with gentle movement and breathwork to prepare the body. Cups are then applied while you rest in supported poses with bolsters and props, holding each posture for several minutes to encourage fascial release, better circulation, and energy balancing. The session closes with light movement and grounding practices to help integrate the experience. Wear shorts and a tank top or sports bra to allow access for cupping, and bring a large beach towel. Mats, bolsters, and cups are provided. Cupping is not recommended for anyone with new tattoos, sunburn, varicose veins, open wounds, pacemakers or other electronic implants, blood disorders such as hemophilia, anemia, or clotting issues, those taking blood thinners, anyone with deep vein thrombosis or a history of blood clots, severe heart, liver, or kidney conditions, pregnancy especially in the first trimester or over the abdomen, recent surgeries within six weeks, or active infections, fever, or immune deficiency. If uncertain, consult a medical professional in advance. Registration is $42 per person when paying by credit card or $40 per person when paying by cash or check. Those paying by cash or check who inform reception upon arrival receive a free essential oil of the month. Spots are limited. If enrollment is canceled by a participant or if the class is canceled by the instructor, the cost is credited for future use or refunded by check, minus applicable credit card fees. Refunds are not available for no-shows or for cancellations made less than 24 hours before the class. Kara Lovehart is a Licensed Massage Therapist, Yoga Instructor, Advanced Energy Healer, and Mind-Body Psychic Medium with more than a decade of experience in holistic wellness. Her background includes fascia health, trauma-informed bodywork, and energy balancing.

Jennifer LaRue, evidential medium, @ 1881

Jennifer LaRue, an evidential medium, is a regular presence at 1881 with monthly offerings that alternate between two formats. In odd months she leads an intimate gallery experience where she works with the energy in the room, connects with the spirit world, and shares messages from loved ones, guides, and angels with those present. Seating is intentionally limited to keep the experience personal. In even months she provides private one-on-one readings that bring through messages meant to offer healing, comfort, clarity, and validation. Recognized as a messenger for Spirit, Jennifer focuses on evidential details such as memories and personality traits that help confirm who is coming through. She believes that loved ones who have passed remain close and wish to communicate, and she serves as a bridge between the physical and spiritual worlds. Her path began with strong childhood intuition. After the passing of her grandmother, Ga, a clear message encouraged her to embrace her purpose and give voice to those in Spirit. Guided by Ga, she deepened her relationship with the spirit world and trained with teachers, peers, and mentors. She approaches this work with heart, humility, and integrity, collaborating closely with loved ones, guides, and angels to support healing on both sides. At 1881 she also appears at seasonal open house events and teaches Getting Clair, an approachable introduction to the clairs for anyone curious about intuitive development. Details about dates, times, pricing, and registration are shared each month in the Discussions tab and on the events calendar. Both the gallery and private reading formats welcome first-time participants. Information shared by Jennifer LaRue is for entertainment purposes only and is not intended as a binding prediction or professional advice.
