    GVLJazz Underground

Coffee Underground, 100 N Main St, Greenville · verified Aug 2
    See details

In the spirit of generations of jazz innovators who have reimagined the standards, from Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker to John Coltrane, Keith Jarrett, and Ethan Iverson, vocalist, composer, and arranger Leah Rutherford steps forward with a newly assembled quartet shaped by shared experiences in the Greenville Fine Arts Center jazz studio. In their first performance together, the group offers fresh arrangements of both well known and seldom heard standards, along with original works that honor the style and language of the classic composers. Several of these arrangements will be heard for the first time. Rutherford blends a deep connection to lyrics with an instrumental sensibility informed by transcribing masters like Sonny Stitt and J. J. Johnson, studies she began at the Fine Arts Center and continues at the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami. The ensemble features William Armstrong on piano, Ethan Ropp on bass, and Patrick Lane on drums. The music unfolds in the Jazz Underground setting at the Coffee Underground Theater, an intimate listening room that also serves house-made desserts, coffee roasted on site, and a selection of teas, wine, and cocktails.
