Myths of survival and big-screen stories are set aside in favor of evidence that helps pinpoint when the species disappeared. The lecture highlights recent advances in understanding how megalodon evolved, how it lived, and how its extinction unfolded. It also considers how the loss of such a giant carnivore influenced the development of today’s marine ecosystems and what that perspective can tell us about the challenges facing modern ocean life.
